Hydrogen induced interface engineering in Fe2O3-TiO2 heterostructures for efficient charge separation for solar-driven water oxidation in photoelectrochemical cells
Semiconductor heterostructure junctions are known to improve the water oxidation performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Depending on the semiconductor materials involved, different kinds of junctions can appear, for instance, type II band alignment where the conduction and valence bands of the semiconductor materials are staggered with respect to each other. This band alignment allows for a charge separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, where the holes will go from low-to-high valance band levels and vice versa for the electrons. For this reason, interface engineering has attracted intensive attention in recent years. In this work, a simplified model of the Fe2O3-TiO2 heterostructure was investigated via first-principles calculations. The results show that Fe2O3-TiO2 produces a type I band alignment in the heterojunction, which is detrimental to the water oxidation reaction. However, the results also show that interstitial hydrogens are energetically allowed in TiO2 and that they introduce states above the valance band, which can assist in the transfer of holes through the TiO2 layer. In response, well-defined planar Fe2O3-TiO2 heterostructures were manufactured, and measurements confirm the formation of a type I band alignment in the case of Fe2O3-TiO2, with very low photocurrent density as a result. However, once TiO2 was subjected to hydrogen treatment, there was a nine times higher photocurrent density at 1.50 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode under 1 sun illumination as compared to the original heterostructured photoanode. Via optical absorption, XPS analysis, and (photo)electrochemical measurements, it is clear that hydrogen treated TiO2 results in a type II band alignment in the Fe2O3-H:TiO2 heterostructure. This work is an example of how hydrogen doping in TiO2 can tailor the band alignment in TiO2-Fe2O3 heterostructures. Source control options for reducing emission of priority pollutants from urban areas.
The overall aim of the ScorePP project is to develop comprehensive and appropriate source
control strategies that authorities, cities, water utilities and the chemical industry can employ
to reduce emissions of priority pollutants (PPs) from urban areas into the receiving water
environment. Focus is on the 33 priority and priority hazardous substances and substance
groups identified in the European Water Framework Directive. However, this list may be
expanded to include emerging pollutants or reduced if appropriate model compounds can be
identified. The initial work focuses on 67 substances, including substances identified in the
proposed European environmental quality standard (EQS) directive as well as the defined
example compounds and several organometallic derivatives. Information on inherent
properties, environmental presence and fate, and legislative issues is made available in open
database format, and a data management system combining chemical identification (CAS#),
NACE economic activity classifications and NOSE-P emission source classifications has been
developed as a basis for spatial characterisation of PP sources using GIS. Further work will
focus on dynamic urban scale source-flux models, identifying emission patterns and
optimising monitoring programmes in case studies and multi-criteria comparison of source
control versus end-of-pipe mitigation options in relation to their economic, social and
environmental impacts
Development and operation of a pixel segmented liquid-filled linear array for radiotherapy quality assurance
A liquid isooctane (CH) filled ionization linear array for
radiotherapy quality assurance has been designed, built and tested. The
detector consists of 128 pixels, each of them with an area of 1.7 mm
1.7 mm and a gap of 0.5 mm. The small pixel size makes the detector ideal for
high gradient beam profiles like those present in Intensity Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT) and radiosurgery. As read-out electronics we use the X-Ray Data
Acquisition System (XDAS) with the Xchip developed by the CCLRC.
Studies concerning the collection efficiency dependence on the polarization
voltage and on the dose rate have been made in order to optimize the device
operation.
In the first tests we have studied dose rate and energy dependences, and
signal reproducibility. Dose rate dependence was found lower than 2.5 % up to 5
Gy min, and energy dependence lower than 2.1 % up to 20 cm depth in
solid water. Output factors and penumbras for several rectangular fields have
been measured with the linear array and were compared with the results obtained
with a 0.125 cm air ionization chamber and radiographic film,
respectively. Finally, we have acquired profiles for an IMRT field and for a
virtual wedge. These profiles have also been compared with radiographic film
measurements. All the comparisons show a good correspondence. Signal
reproducibility was within a 2% during the test period (around three months).
The device has proved its capability to verify on-line therapy beams with

Maternal smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of recurrent wheezing during the first years of life (BAMSE)
BACKGROUND: Exposure to cigarette smoking during foetal and early postnatal life may have implications for lung health. The aim of this study was to assess the possible effects of such exposure in utero on lower respiratory disease in children up to two years of age. METHODS: A birth cohort of 4089 newborn infants was followed for two years using parental questionnaires. When the infant was two months old the parents completed a questionnaire on various lifestyle factors, including maternal smoking during pregnancy and after birth. At one and two years of age information was obtained by questionnaire on symptoms of allergic and respiratory diseases as well as on environmental exposures, particularly exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Adjustments were made for potential confounders. RESULTS: When the mother had smoked during pregnancy but not after that, there was an increased risk of recurrent wheezing up to two years' age, OR(adj )= 2.2, (95% CI 1.3 – 3.6). The corresponding OR was 1.6, (95% CI 1.2 – 2.3) for reported exposure to ETS with or without maternal smoking in utero. Maternal smoking during pregnancy but no exposure to ETS also increased the risk of doctor's diagnosed asthma up to two years of age, OR(adj )= 2.1, (95% CI 1.2 – 3.7). CONCLUSION: Exposure to maternal cigarette smoking in utero is a risk factor for recurrent wheezing, as well as doctor's diagnosed asthma in children up to two yearsof age
Magnetic excitations in coupled Haldane spin chains near the quantum critical point
Two quasi-1-dimensional S=1 quantum antiferromagnetic materials, PbNi2V2O8
and SrNi2V2O8, are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples.
While magnetic interactions in the two systems are found to be very similar,
subtle differences in inter-chain interaction strengths and magnetic anisotropy
are detected. The latter are shown to be responsible for qualitatively
different ground state properties: magnetic long-range order in SrNi2V2O8 and
disordered ``spin liquid'' Haldane-gap state in PbNi2V2O8.Comment: 15 figures, Figs. 5,9, and 10 in color. Some figures in JPEG format.

Interactions between Glutathione S-Transferase P1, Tumor Necrosis Factor, and Traffic-Related Air Pollution for Development of Childhood Allergic Disease
BACKGROUND: Air pollutants may induce airway inflammation and sensitization due to generation of reactive oxygen species. The genetic background to these mechanisms could be important effect modifiers. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to assess interactions between exposure to air pollution and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the beta2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2), glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) genes for development of childhood allergic disease. METHODS: In a birth cohort originally of 4,089 children, we assessed air pollution from local traffic using nitrogen oxides (traffic NO(x)) as an indicator based on emission databases and dispersion modeling and estimated individual exposure through geocoding of home addresses. We measured peak expiratory flow rates and specific IgE for inhalant and food allergens at 4 years of age, and selected children with asthma symptoms up to 4 years of age (n = 542) and controls (n = 542) for genotyping. RESULTS: Interaction effects on allergic sensitization were indicated between several GSTP1 SNPs and traffic NO(x) exposure during the first year of life (p(nominal) < 0.001-0.06). Children with Ile105Val/Val105Val genotypes were at increased risk of sensitization to any allergen when exposed to elevated levels of traffic NO(x) (for a difference between the 5th and 95th percentile of exposure: odds ratio = 2.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.0-5.3). In children with TNF-308 GA/AA genotypes, the GSTP1-NO(x) interaction effect was even more pronounced. We observed no conclusive interaction effects for ADRB2. CONCLUSION: The effect of air pollution from traffic on childhood allergy appears to be modified by GSTP1 and TNF variants, supporting a role of genes controlling the antioxidative system and inflammatory response in allergy
Scaling up the effects of inbreeding depression from individuals to metapopulations
Abstract Inbreeding is common in nature, and many laboratory studies have documented that inbreeding depression can reduce the fitness of individuals. Demonstrating the consequences of inbreeding depression on the growth and persistence of populations is more challenging because populations are often regulated by density- or frequency-dependent selection and influenced by demographic and environmental stochasticity. A few empirical studies have shown that inbreeding depression can increase extinction risk of local populations. The importance of inbreeding depression at the metapopulation level has been conjectured based on population-level studies but has not been evaluated. We quantified the impact of inbreeding depression affecting the fitness of individuals on metapopulation persistence in heterogeneous habitat networks of different sizes and habitat configuration in a context of natural butterfly metapopulations. We developed a spatial individual-based simulation model of metapopulations with explicit genetics. We used Approximate Bayesian Computation to fit the model to extensive demographic, genetic, and life-history data available for the well-studied Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) metapopulations in the Åland islands in SW Finland. We compared 18 semi-independent habitat networks differing in size and fragmentation. The results show that inbreeding is more frequent in small habitat networks, and consequently, inbreeding depression elevates extinction risks in small metapopulations. Metapopulation persistence and neutral genetic diversity maintained in the metapopulations increase with the total habitat amount in and mean patch size of habitat networks. Dispersal and mating behavior interact with landscape structure to determine how likely it is to encounter kin while looking for mates. Inbreeding depression can decrease the viability of small metapopulations even when they are strongly influenced by stochastic extinction-colonization dynamics and density-dependent selection. The findings from this study support that genetic factors, in addition to demographic factors, can contribute to extinctions of small local populations and also of metapopulations.
