Canonical and path integral quantisation of string cosmology models
We discuss the quantisation of a class of string cosmology models that are
characterized by scale factor duality invariance. We compute the amplitudes for
the full set of classically allowed and forbidden transitions by applying the
reduce phase space and the path integral methods. We show that these approaches
are consistent. The path integral calculation clarifies the meaning of the
instanton-like behaviour of the transition amplitudes that has been first

Relational Quantum Mechanics
I suggest that the common unease with taking quantum mechanics as a
fundamental description of nature (the "measurement problem") could derive from
the use of an incorrect notion, as the unease with the Lorentz transformations
before Einstein derived from the notion of observer-independent time. I suggest
that this incorrect notion is the notion of observer-independent state of a
system (or observer-independent values of physical quantities). I reformulate
the problem of the "interpretation of quantum mechanics" as the problem of
deriving the formalism from a few simple physical postulates. I consider a
reformulation of quantum mechanics in terms of information theory. All systems
are assumed to be equivalent, there is no observer-observed distinction, and
the theory describes only the information that systems have about each other;

Interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions - a study using mobile phone data
In this study we analyze one year of anonymized telecommunications data for
over one million customers from a large European cellphone operator, and we
investigate the relationship between people's calls and their physical
location. We discover that more than 90% of users who have called each other
have also shared the same space (cell tower), even if they live far apart.
Moreover, we find that close to 70% of users who call each other frequently (at
least once per month on average) have shared the same space at the same time -
an instance that we call co-location. Co-locations appear indicative of
coordination calls, which occur just before face-to-face meetings. Their number
is highly predictable based on the amount of calls between two users and the
distance between their home locations - suggesting a new way to quantify the
interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions
Dust and the type II-Plateau supernova 2004dj
We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy of a Type II-plateau supernova, SN
2004dj, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope, spanning 106--1393 d after
explosion. MIR photometry plus optical/near-IR observations are also reported.
An early-time MIR excess is attributed to emission from non-silicate dust
formed within a cool dense shell (CDS). Most of the CDS dust condensed between
50 d and 165 d, reaching a mass of 0.3 x 10^{-5} Msun. Throughout the
observations much of the longer wavelength (>10 microns) part of the continuum
is explained as an IR echo from interstellar dust. The MIR excess strengthened
at later times. We show that this was due to thermal emission from warm,
non-silicate dust formed in the ejecta. Using optical/near-IR line-profiles and
the MIR continua, we show that the dust was distributed as a disk whose radius
appeared to be slowly shrinking. The disk radius may correspond to a grain
destruction zone caused by a reverse shock which also heated the dust. The
dust-disk lay nearly face-on, had high opacities in the optical/near-IR
regions, but remained optically thin in the MIR over much of the period
studied. Assuming a uniform dust density, the ejecta dust mass by 996 d was 0.5
+/- 0.1) x 10^{-4} Msun, and exceeded 10^{-4}Msun by 1393 d. For a dust density
rising toward the center the limit is higher. Nevertheless, this study suggests
that the amount of freshly-synthesized dust in the SN 2004dj ejecta is
consistent with that found from previous studies, and adds further weight to
the claim that such events could not have been major contributors to the cosmic

Matrix Elements of Thiemann's Hamiltonian Constraint in Loop Quantum Gravity
We present an explicit computation of matrix elements of the hamiltonian
constraint operator in non-perturbative quantum gravity. In particular, we
consider the euclidean term of Thiemann's version of the constraint and compute
its action on trivalent states, for all its natural orderings. The calculation
is performed using graphical techniques from the recoupling theory of colored
knots and links. We exhibit the matrix elements of the hamiltonian constraint

Reader and author gender and genre in Goodreads

The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.There are known gender differences in book preferences in terms of both genre and author gender but their extent and causes are not well understood. It is unclear whether reader preferences for author genders occur within any or all genres and whether readers evaluate books differently based on author genders within specific genres. This article exploits a major source of informal book reviews, the Goodreads.com website, to assess the influence of reader and author genders on book evaluations within genres. It uses a quantitative analysis of 201,560 books and their reviews, focusing on the top 50 user-specified genres. The results show strong gender differences in the ratings given by reviewers to books within genres, such as female reviewers rating contemporary romance more highly, with males preferring short stories. For most common book genres, reviewers give higher ratings to books authored by their own gender, confirming that gender bias is not confined to the literary elite. The main exception is the comic book, for which male reviewers prefer female authors, despite their scarcity. A word frequency analysis suggested that authors wrote, and reviewers valued, gendered aspects of books within a genre. For example, relationships and romance were disproportionately mentioned by women in mystery and fantasy novels. These results show that, perhaps for the first time, it is possible to get large scale evidence about the reception of books by typical readers, if they post reviews online
Long-term particulate matter exposure and mortality: a review of European epidemiological studies
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several studies considered the relation between long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and total mortality, as well as mortality from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Our aim was to provide a comprehensive review of European epidemiological studies on the issue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We searched the Medline database for epidemiological studies on air pollution and health outcomes published between January 2002 and December 2007. We also examined the reference lists of individual papers and reviews. Two independent reviewers classified the studies according to type of air pollutant, duration of exposure and health outcome considered. Among European investigations that examined long-term PM exposure we found 4 cohort studies (considering total and cardiopulmonary mortality), 1 case-control study (considering mortality from myocardial infarction), and 4 ecologic studies (2 studies considering total and cardiopulmonary mortality and 2 studies focused on cardiovascular mortality).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Measurement indicators of PM exposure used in European studies, including PM10, PM2.5, total suspended particulate and black smoke, were heterogeneous. This notwithstanding, in all analytic studies total mortality was directly associated with long-term exposure to PM. The excesses in mortality were mainly due to cardiovascular and respiratory causes. Three out of 4 ecologic studies found significant direct associations between PM indexes and mortality.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>European studies on long-term exposure to PM indicate a direct association with mortality, particularly from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.</p
Extensive optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby, narrow-lined type Ic SN 2007gr: days 5 to 415
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations at optical and
near-infrared wavelengths of the nearby type Ic SN 2007gr. These represent the
most extensive data-set to date of any supernova of this sub-type, with
frequent coverage from shortly after discovery to more than one year
post-explosion. We deduce a rise time to B-band maximum of 11.5 \pm 2.7 days.
We find a peak B-band magnitude of M_B=-16.8, and light curves which are
remarkably similar to the so-called 'hypernova' SN 2002ap. In contrast, the
spectra of SNe 2007gr and 2002ap show marked differences, not least in their
respective expansion velocities. We attribute these differences primarily to
the density profiles of their progenitor stars at the time of explosion i.e. a
more compact star for SN 2007gr compared to SN 2002ap. From the
quasi-bolometric light curve of SN 2007gr, we estimate that 0.076 0.010
Msun of 56Ni was produced in the explosion. Our near-infrared (IR) spectra
clearly show the onset and disappearance of the first overtone of carbon
monoxide (CO) between ~70 to 175 days relative to B-band maximum. The detection
of the CO molecule implies that ionised He was not microscopically mixed within
the carbon/oxygen layers. From the optical spectra, near-IR light curves, and
colour evolution, we find no evidence for dust condensation in the ejecta out
to about 400 days. Given the combination of unprecedented temporal coverage,
and high signal-to-noise data, we suggest that SN 2007gr could be used as a
template object for supernovae of this sub-class.Comment: A&A accepted; 26 pages & 16 figure
Hundreds of variants clustered in genomic loci and biological pathways affect human height
Most common human traits and diseases have a polygenic pattern of inheritance: DNA sequence variants at many genetic loci influence the phenotype. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified more than 600 variants associated with human traits, but these typically explain small fractions of phenotypic variation, raising questions about the use of further studies. Here, using 183,727 individuals, we show that hundreds of genetic variants, in at least 180 loci, influence adult height, a highly heritable and classic polygenic trait. The large number of loci reveals patterns with important implications for genetic studies of common human diseases and traits. First, the 180 loci are not random, but instead are enriched for genes that are connected in biological pathways (P = 0.016) and that underlie skeletal growth defects (P < 0.001). Second, the likely causal gene is often located near the most strongly associated variant: in 13 of 21 loci containing a known skeletal growth gene, that gene was closest to the associated variant. Third, at least 19 loci have multiple independently associated variants, suggesting that allelic heterogeneity is a frequent feature of polygenic traits, that comprehensive explorations of already-discovered loci should discover additional variants and that an appreciable fraction of associated loci may have been identified. Fourth, associated variants are enriched for likely functional effects on genes, being over-represented among variants that alter amino-acid structure of proteins and expression levels of nearby genes. Our data explain approximately 10% of the phenotypic variation in height, and we estimate that unidentified common variants of similar effect sizes would increase this figure to approximately 16% of phenotypic variation (approximately 20% of heritable variation). Although additional approaches are needed to dissect the genetic architecture of polygenic human traits fully, our findings indicate that GWA studies can identify large numbers of loci that implicate biologically relevant genes and pathways.
Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
