A human factors approach to analysing military command and control
This paper applies the Event Analysis for Systemic Teamwork (EAST) method to an example of military command and control. EAST offers a way to describe system level 'emergent properties' that arise from the complex interactions of system components (human and technical). These are described using an integrated methods approach and modelled using Task, Social and Knowledge networks. The current article is divided into three parts: a brief description of the military command and control context, a brief description of the EAST method, and a more in depth presentation of the analysis outcomes. Numerous findings emerge from the application of the method. These findings are compared with similar analyses undertaken in civilian domains, where Network Enabled Capability (NEC) is already in place. The emergent properties of the military scenario relate to the degree of system reconfigurability, systems level Situational Awareness (SA), team-working and the role of mediating technology. It is argued that the EAST method can be used to offer several interesting perspectives on designing and specifying NEC capability in military context
Eighteenth Year of the Gulf of Maine Environmental Monitoring Program
This report summarizes the metals and organic contaminant data associated with the collection and analyses of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) tissue from selected sites along the Gulf of Maine coast during the 2008 sampling season. Contaminant monitoring is conducted by the Gulfwatch Program for the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment (GOMC). A subset of these data is compared with analytical results from earlier Gulfwatch monitoring (2001-2007). Statistical analyses are limited to descriptive measures of replicates from selected sampling sites and include: arithmetic means, and appropriate measures of variance. The primary purpose of this report is to present the current annual results, present graphical representation of spatial and temporal trends and identify potential outliers in order to provide investigators and other interested persons with contemporary information concerning water quality in the Gulf of Maine, as reflected by uptake into resident shellfish (mussels and clams)
Marker-less tracking for respiratory motion correction in nuclear medicine
This paper present preliminary work in developing a method of using a marker-less tracking system to analyze the natural temporal variations in chest wall configuration during breathing, thus avoiding reliance on a limited number of fiducial markers. This involves using a marker-less video capture of the motion of the abdominal-chest surface and the development of a B-spline model to parameterize this motion. The advantage of the marker-less system that is non-invasive and non-ionizing, thus facilitating high throughput without the need for marker-based patient set-up time
Inter- and intra-subject variation of abdominal vs. thoracic respiratory motion using kernel density estimation
In nuclear medicine, there is a significant research focus in developing a new approach in monitoring, tracking and compensating respiratory motion during image acquisition. We address this by attempting to model the respiratory cycle pattern and finding a method that describes the configuration of the anterior surface which then correlates with the internal position/configuration of the internal organ as a foundation for motion compensation. This paper presents novel work in parameterizing external respiratory motion using a method based on the variation of abdominal vs. thoracic surface markers to investigate inter- and intra-subject variation. The dominant mode of variation of the Abdominal and Thoracic surfaces during respiration using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is studied. This demonstrates that pattern of TS vs AS motion appears temporally at a global level stable. Thus although breathing style is consistent within a given subject, we there observe temporal changes in the amplitude and density of the PDF in intra-subject data
Efficacy of metacognitive therapy for prolonged grief disorder: protocol for a randomised controlled trial
Introduction: Studies of effective psychotherapy for individuals suffering from the effects of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are scarce. This paper describes the protocol for an evaluation of a metacognitive therapy programme designed specifically for PGD, to reduce the psychological distress and loss of functioning resulting from bereavement. Methods and analysis: The proposed trial comprises three phases. Phase 1 consists of a review of the literature and semistructured interviews with key members of the target population to inform the development of a metacognitive therapy programme for Prolonged Grief. Phase 2 involves a randomised controlled trial to implement and evaluate the programme. Male and female adults (N=34) will be randomly assigned to either a wait list or an intervention group. Measures of PGD, anxiety, depression, rumination, metacognitions and quality of life will be taken pretreatment and posttreatment and at the 3-month and 6-month follow-up. The generalised linear mixed model will be used to assess treatment efficacy. Phase 3 will test the social validity of the programme. Discussion: This study is the first empirical investigation of the efficacy of a targeted metacognitive treatment programme for PGD. A focus on identifying and changing the metacognitive mechanisms underpinning the development and maintenance of prolonged grief is likely to be beneficial to theory and practice
Diversity of supernovae Ia determined using equivalent widths of Si II 4000
Spectroscopic and photometric properties of low and high-z supernovae Ia (SNe
Ia) have been analyzed in order to achieve a better understanding of their
diversity and to identify possible SN Ia sub-types. We use wavelet transformed
spectra in which one can easily measure spectral features. We investigate the
\ion{Si}{II} 4000 equivalent width (EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace). The
ability and, especially, the ease in extending the method to SNe at high- is
demonstrated. We applied the method to 110 SNe Ia and found correlations
between EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace and parameters related to the
light-curve shape for 88 supernovae with available photometry. No evidence for
evolution of EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace with redshift is seen. Three
sub-classes of SNe Ia were confirmed using an independent cluster analysis with
only light-curve shape, colour, and EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace. SNe from
high- samples seem to follow a similar grouping to nearby objects. The
EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace value measured on a single spectrum may point
towards SN Ia sub-classification, avoiding the need for expansion velocity
