    A phantom force induced by the tunneling current, characterized on Si(111)

    Simultaneous measurements of tunneling currents and atomic forces on surfaces and adsorbates provide new insights into the electronic and structural properties of matter on the atomic scale. We report on experimental observations and calculations of a strong impact the tunneling current can have on the measured force, which arises when the resistivity of the sample cannot be neglected. We present a study on Si(111)-7\times7 with various doping levels, but this effect is expected to occur on other low-conductance samples like adsorbed molecules, and is likely to strongly affect Kelvin probe measurements on the atomic scale.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitte

    Oxide Fiber Cathode Materials for Rechargeable Lithium Cells

    LiCoO2 and LiNiO2 fibers have been investigated as alternatives to LiCoO2 and LiNiO2 powders used as lithium-intercalation compounds in cathodes of rechargeable lithium-ion electrochemical cells. In making such a cathode, LiCoO2 or LiNiO2 powder is mixed with a binder [e.g., poly(vinylidene fluoride)] and an electrically conductive additive (usually carbon) and the mixture is pressed to form a disk. The binder and conductive additive contribute weight and volume, reducing the specific energy and energy density, respectively. In contrast, LiCoO2 or LiNiO2 fibers can be pressed and sintered to form a cathode, without need for a binder or a conductive additive. The inter-grain contacts of the fibers are stronger and have fewer defects than do those of powder particles. These characteristics translate to increased flexibility and greater resilience on cycling and, consequently, to reduced loss of capacity from cycle to cycle. Moreover, in comparison with a powder-based cathode, a fiber-based cathode is expected to exhibit significantly greater ionic and electronic conduction along the axes of the fibers. Results of preliminary charge/discharge-cycling tests suggest that energy densities of LiCoO2- and LiNiO2-fiber cathodes are approximately double those of the corresponding powder-based cathodes

    Structural basis for map formation in the thalamocortical pathway of the barrelless mouse

    Barrelless mice (BRL) homozygous for the BRL mutation that disrupts the gene coding for adenylyl cyclase type I on chromosome 11 lack spatial segregation of layer IV cortical cells and of the thalamocortical axons (TCAs) into barrel domains. Despite these morphological perturbations, a functional topographic map has been demonstrated. We reconstructed individual biocytin-injected TCAs from thalamus to barrel cortex in NOR (normal) and BRL mice to analyze to what extent the TCA arborization pattern and bouton distribution could explain the topographic representation of the whisker follicles. In BRL, the geometry of TCA is modified within layer IV as well as in infragranular layers. However, in both strains, the spatial distribution of TCA in layer IV reflects the spatial relationship of their cell bodies in the ventrobasal nucleus of the thalamus. The morphometric analysis revealed that TCAs of both strains have the same length, branch number, and number of axonal boutons in layer IV. However, in barrelless, the boutons are distributed within a larger tangential extent. Analysis of the distribution of boutons from neighboring thalamic neurons demonstrated the existence in layer IV of domains of high bouton density that in both strains equal the size and shape of individual barrels. We propose that the domains of high bouton density are at the basis of the whisker map in barrelless mice

    The palaeoproteomic identification of pleistocene hominin skeletal remains

    The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Europe witnesses the local replacement of Neanderthals by Anatomically Modern Humans. During this period several “transitional” technocomplexes are present that seem to combine behavioural characteristics from both the preceding Middle and following Upper Palaeolithic. These technocomplexes therefore play a critical role in our understanding of Neanderthal behavior, cognition and extinction, the dispersal of AMHs into Europe, and the interactions between Neanderthals and AMHs. Unfortunately, biological remains of the hominins responsible for the transitional technocomplexes are notoriously scarce. This dissertation proposes to utilize recent advances in mass spectrometry to identify additional hominin specimens through ZooMS screening and shotgun proteomics. Novel approaches towards de novo/error-tolerant proteomic analysis in Pleistocene contexts were developed and tested, allowing phylogenetic analysis of ancient protein sequences from now-extinct Mammalian species and hominin populations. ZooMS screening is shown to be highly successful for all included Châtelperronian sites. The discovery of additional hominin specimens at one archaeological site allowed demonstrating that ancient protein sequences can be used to differentiate between hominin populations, in this case indicating a Neanderthal affiliation. As a result, palaeoproteomics now allows studying the evolutionary relationships between hominin individuals based on ancient protein sequences.Max-Planck-GesellschaftHuman origins and Bio-Archaeolog

    Diurnal inhibition of NMDA-EPSCs at rat hippocampal mossy fibre synapses through orexin-2 receptors.

    Diurnal release of the orexin neuropeptides orexin-A (Ox-A, hypocretin-1) and orexin-B (Ox-B, hypocretin-2) stabilises arousal, regulates energy homeostasis and contributes to cognition and learning. However, whether cellular correlates of brain plasticity are regulated through orexins, and whether they do so in a time-of-day-dependent manner, has never been assessed. Immunohistochemically we found sparse but widespread innervation of hippocampal subfields through Ox-A- and Ox-B-containing fibres in young adult rats. The actions of Ox-A were studied on NMDA receptor (NMDAR)-mediated excitatory synaptic transmission in acute hippocampal slices prepared around the trough (Zeitgeber time (ZT) 4-8, corresponding to 4-8 h into the resting phase) and peak (ZT 23) of intracerebroventricular orexin levels. At ZT 4-8, exogenous Ox-A (100 nm in bath) inhibited NMDA receptor-mediated excitatory postsynaptic currents (NMDA-EPSCs) at mossy fibre (MF)-CA3 (to 55.6 ± 6.8% of control, P = 0.0003) and at Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses (70.8 ± 6.3%, P = 0.013), whereas it remained ineffective at non-MF excitatory synapses in CA3. Ox-A actions were mediated postsynaptically and blocked by the orexin-2 receptor (OX2R) antagonist JNJ10397049 (1 μm), but not by orexin-1 receptor inhibition (SB334867, 1 μm) or by adrenergic and cholinergic antagonists. At ZT 23, inhibitory effects of exogenous Ox-A were absent (97.6 ± 2.9%, P = 0.42), but reinstated (87.2 ± 3.3%, P = 0.002) when endogenous orexin signalling was attenuated for 5 h through i.p. injections of almorexant (100 mg kg(-1)), a dual orexin receptor antagonist. In conclusion, endogenous orexins modulate hippocampal NMDAR function in a time-of-day-dependent manner, suggesting that they may influence cellular plasticity and consequent variations in memory performance across the sleep-wake cycle

    Carbon Stable Isotope Analysis of Bison Dentition

    Understanding how bison behaved in the past can provide key insights for today\u27s managers, ecologists, and anthropologists. However, the direct application of both historic documentation and modern field observations may not provide the necessary insights for understanding bison behaviors in archeological and paleontological contexts. In order to develop a better understanding of possible behavior within these contexts, we have developed individual foraging histories for 22 Bison bison from the Glenrock Buffalo Jump assemblage of the Plains Late Prehistoric period in Wyoming and four Pleistocene B. priscus from the Ukraine. Incremental stable carbon isotopic values of dental enamel were used to determine foraging histories. The progressive development of enamel allows for samples to be selected that represent distinct periods of an individual\u27s life. Comparison of these dietary patterns among members of a herd can demonstrate foraging behaviors of cohorts and, in turn, the entire assemblage. Application of this high resolution paleodietary technique provides new information on bison behaviors in a paleontological and archaeological context

    Imaging dielectric relaxation in nanostructured polymers by frequency modulation electrostatic force microscopy

    We have developed a method for imaging the temperature-frequency dependence of the dynamics of nanostructured polymer films with spatial resolution. This method provides images with dielectric compositional contrast well decoupled from topography. Using frequency-modulation electrostatic-force-microscopy, we probe the local frequency-dependent (0.1–100 Hz) dielectric response through measurement of the amplitude and phase of the force gradient in response to an oscillating applied electric field. When the phase is imaged at fixed frequency, it reveals the spatial variation in dielectric losses, i.e., the spatial variation in molecular/dipolar dynamics, with 40 nm lateral resolution. This is demonstrated by using as a model system; a phase separated polystyrene/polyvinyl-acetate (PVAc) blend. We show that nanoscale dynamic domains of PVAc are clearly identifiable in phase images as those which light-up in a band of temperature, reflecting the variations in the molecular/dipolar dynamics approaching the glass transition temperature of PVAc

    Precision Mass Measurements of 129-131Cd and Their Impact on Stellar Nucleosynthesis via the Rapid Neutron Capture Process

    Masses adjacent to the classical waiting-point nuclide 130Cd have been measured by using the Penning- trap spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. We find a significant deviation of over 400 keV from earlier values evaluated by using nuclear beta-decay data. The new measurements show the reduction of the N = 82 shell gap below the doubly magic 132Sn. The nucleosynthesis associated with the ejected wind from type-II supernovae as well as from compact object binary mergers is studied, by using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations. We find a consistent and direct impact of the newly measured masses on the calculated abundances in the A = 128 - 132 region and a reduction of the uncertainties from the precision mass input data

    Hospital revascularisation capability and quality of care after an acute coronary syndrome in Switzerland.

    BACKGROUND: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) transferred to regional nonacademic hospitals after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may receive fewer preventive interventions than patients who remain in university hospitals. We aimed at comparing hospitals with and without PCI facilities regarding guidelines-recommended secondary prevention interventions after an ACS. METHODS: We studied patients with ACS admitted to a university hospital with PCI facilities in Switzerland, and either transferred within 48 hours to regional nonacademic hospitals without PCI facilities or directly discharged from the university hospital. We measured prescription rates of evidence-based recommended therapies after ACS including reasons for nonprescription of aspirin, statins, β-blockers, angiotensin converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) / angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB), along with cardiac rehabilitation attendance and delivery of a smoking cessation intervention. RESULTS: Overall, 720 patients with ACS were enrolled; 541 (75.1%) were discharged from the hospital with PCI facilities, 179 (24.9%) were transferred to hospitals without PCI facilities. Concomitant prescription of aspirin, β-blockers, ACEI/ARB and statins at discharge was similar in hospitals with and without PCI facilities, reaching 83.9% and 85.5%, respectively (p = 0.62). Attendance at cardiac rehabilitation reached 55.5% for the hospital with PCI facilities and 65.7% for hospitals without PCI facilities (p = 0.02). In-hospital smoking cessation interventions were delivered to 70.8% patients exclusively at the hospital with PCI facilities. CONCLUSION: Quality of care for patients with ACS discharged from hospitals without PCI facilities was similar to that of patients directly discharged from the hospital with PCI facilities, except for in-hospital smoking cessation counselling and cardiac rehabilitation attendance
