Vertical Transmission of a Phylogenetically Complex Microbial Consortium in the Viviparous Sponge \u3cem\u3eIrcinia Felix\u3c/em\u3e
Many marine demosponges contain large amounts of phylogenetically complex yet highly sponge-specific microbial consortia within the mesohyl matrix, but little is known about how these microorganisms are acquired by their hosts. Settlement experiments were performed with the viviparous Caribbean demosponge Ircinia felix to investigate the role of larvae in the vertical transmission of the sponge-associated microbial community. Inspections by electron microscopy revealed large amounts of morphologically diverse microorganisms in the center of I. felix larvae, while the outer rim appeared to be devoid of microorganisms. In juveniles, microorganisms were found between densely packed sponge cells. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was performed to compare the bacterial community profiles of adults, larvae, and juvenile sponges. Adults and larvae were highly similar in DGGE band numbers and banding patterns. Larvae released by the same adult individual contained highly similar DGGE banding patterns, whereas larvae released by different adult individuals showed slightly different DGGE banding patterns. Over 200 bands were excised, sequenced, and phylogenetically analyzed. The bacterial diversity of adult I. felix and its larvae was comparably high, while juveniles showed reduced diversity. In total, 13 vertically transmitted sequence clusters, hereafter termed “IF clusters,” that contained sequences from both the adult sponge and offspring (larvae and/or juveniles) were found. The IF clusters belonged to at least four different eubacterial phyla and one possibly novel eubacterial lineage. In summary, it could be shown that in I. felix, vertical transmission of microorganisms through the larvae is an important mechanism for the establishment of the sponge-microbe association

Thermodynamics of Four-Flavour QCD with Improved Staggered Fermions
We have calculated the pressure and energy density in four-flavour QCD using
improved fermion and gauge actions. We observe a strong reduction of finite
cut-off effects in the high temperature regime, similar to what has been noted
before for the SU(3) gauge theory. Calculations have been performed on
and 16^4 lattices for two values of the quark mass,
and 0.1. A calculation of the string tension at zero temperature yields a
critical temperature for the smaller

Improved Actions for QCD Thermodynamics on the Lattice
Finite cut-off effects strongly influence the thermodynamics of lattice
regularized QCD at high temperature in the standard Wilson formulation. We
analyze the reduction of finite cut-off effects in formulations of the
thermodynamics of gauge theories with three different and
improved actions. We calculate the energy density and pressure on
finite lattices in leading order weak coupling perturbation theory
() and perform Monte Carlo simulations with improved
actions at non-zero . Already on lattices with temporal extent
we find a strong reduction of finite cut-off effects in the high
temperature limit, which persists also down to temperatures a few times the

Static quark anti-quark free energy and the running coupling at finite temperature
We analyze the free energy of a static quark anti-quark pair in quenched QCD
at short and large distances. From this we deduce running couplings, g^2(r,T),
and determine the length scale that separates at high temperature the short
distance perturbative regime from the large distance non-perturbative regime in
the QCD plasma phase. Ambiguities in the definition of a coupling beyond the
perturbative regime are discussed in their relation to phenomenological
considerations on heavy quark bound states in the quark gluon plasma. Our
analysis suggests that it is more appropriate to characterize the
non-perturbative properties of the QCD plasma phase close to T_c in terms
remnants of the confinement part of the QCD force rather than a strong

Perturbative calculation of improvement coefficients to O(g^2a) for bilinear quark operators in lattice QCD
We calculate the O(g^2 a) mixing coefficients of bilinear quark operators in
lattice QCD using a standard perturbative evaluation of on-shell Green's
functions. Our results for the plaquette gluon action are in agreement with
those previously obtained with the Schr\"odinger functional method. The
coefficients are also calculated for a class of improved gluon actions having

One-Loop Self Energy and Renormalization of the Speed of Light for some Anisotropic Improved Quark Actions
One-loop corrections to the fermion rest mass M_1, wave function
renormalization Z_2 and speed of light renormalization C_0 are presented for
lattice actions that combine improved glue with clover or D234 quark actions
and keep the temporal and spatial lattice spacings, a_t and a_s, distinct. We
explore a range of values for the anisotropy parameter \chi = a_s/a_t and treat

The SU(3) deconfining phase transition with Symanzik action
We report on the determination of the deconfining temperature in SU(3) pure
gauge theory, using the Symanzik tree level improved action, on lattices of
size 3 x 12^3, 4 x 16^3, 5 x 20^3, 6 x24^3. We find that the asymptotic scaling
violation pattern is similar to the one observed using the Wilson action. We
conclude that the irrelevant operators do not affect, in the range of couplings
considered, the lattice beta function. An analysis based on an effective
