    Detecting the Most Distant (z>7) Objects with ALMA

    Detecting and studying objects at the highest redshifts, out to the end of Cosmic Reionization at z>7, is clearly a key science goal of ALMA. ALMA will in principle be able to detect objects in this redshift range both from high-J (J>7) CO transitions and emission from ionized carbon, [CII], which is one of the main cooling lines of the ISM. ALMA will even be able to resolve this emission for individual targets, which will be one of the few ways to determine dynamical masses for systems in the Epoch of Reionization. We discuss some of the current problems regarding the detection and characterization of objects at high redshifts and how ALMA will eliminate most (but not all) of them.Comment: to appear in Astrophysics and Space Science, "Science with ALMA: a new era for Astrophysics", ed.     Universal flow diagram for the magnetoconductance in disordered GaAs layers

    The temperature driven flow lines of the diagonal and Hall magnetoconductance data (G_{xx},G_{xy}) are studied in heavily Si-doped, disordered GaAs layers with different thicknesses. The flow lines are quantitatively well described by a recent universal scaling theory developed for the case of duality symmetry. The separatrix G_{xy}=1 (in units e^2/h) separates an insulating state from a spin-degenerate quantum Hall effect (QHE) state. The merging into the insulator or the QHE state at low temperatures happens along a semicircle separatrix G_{xx}^2+(G_{xy}-1)^2=1 which is divided by an unstable fixed point at (G_{xx},G_{xy})=(1,1).Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.     Phylogeny of Prokaryotes and Chloroplasts Revealed by a Simple Composition Approach on All Protein Sequences from Complete Genomes Without Sequence Alignment

    The complete genomes of living organisms have provided much information on their phylogenetic relationships. Similarly, the complete genomes of chloroplasts have helped to resolve the evolution of this organelle in photosynthetic eukaryotes. In this paper we propose an alternative method of phylogenetic analysis using compositional statistics for all protein sequences from complete genomes. This new method is conceptually simpler than and computationally as fast as the one proposed by Qi et al. (2004b) and Chu et al. (2004). The same data sets used in Qi et al. (2004b) and Chu et al. (2004) are analyzed using the new method. Our distance-based phylogenic tree of the 109 prokaryotes and eukaryotes agrees with the biologists tree of life based on 16S rRNA comparison in a predominant majority of basic branching and most lower taxa. Our phylogenetic analysis also shows that the chloroplast genomes are separated to two major clades corresponding to chlorophytes s.l. and rhodophytes s.l. The interrelationships among the chloroplasts are largely in agreement with the current understanding on chloroplast evolution

    Ultra-red Galaxies Signpost Candidate Protoclusters at High Redshift

    We present images obtained with LABOCA of a sample of 22 galaxies selected via their red Herschel SPIRE colors. We aim to see if these luminous, rare, and distant galaxies are signposting dense regions in the early universe. Our 870 μm survey covers an area of ≈1 deg2 down to an average rms of 3.9mJybeam13.9\,\mathrm{mJy}\,{\mathrm{beam}}^{-1}, with our five deepest maps going ≈2× deeper still. We catalog 86 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) around our "signposts," detected above a significance of 3.5σ. This implies a 10030+30%{100}_{-30}^{+30} \% overdensity of S870>8.5mJy{S}_{870}\gt 8.5\,\mathrm{mJy} (or {L}_{\mathrm{FIR}}=6.7\times {10}^{12}\mbox{--}2.9\times {10}^{13}\,{L}_{\odot }) DSFGs, excluding our signposts, when comparing our number counts to those in "blank fields." Thus, we are 99.93% confident that our signposts are pinpointing overdense regions in the universe, and ≈95% [50%] confident that these regions are overdense by a factor of at least ≥1.5 × [2×]. Using template spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and SPIRE/LABOCA photometry, we derive a median photometric redshift of z = 3.2 ± 0.2 for our signposts, with an inter-quartile range of z = 2.8–3.6, somewhat higher than expected for ~850 μm selected galaxies. We constrain the DSFGs that are likely responsible for this overdensity to within Δz0.65| {\rm{\Delta }}z| \leqslant 0.65 of their respective signposts. These "associated" DSFGs are radially distributed within (physical) distances of 1.6 ± 0.5 Mpc from their signposts, have median star formation rates (SFRs) of (1.0±0.2)×103Myr1\approx (1.0\pm 0.2)\times {10}^{3}\,{M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1} (for a Salpeter stellar inital mass function) and median gas reservoirs of 1.7×1011M\sim 1.7\times {10}^{11}\,{M}_{\odot }. These candidate protoclusters have average total SFRs of at least (2.3±0.5)×103Myr1\approx (2.3\pm 0.5)\times {10}^{3}\,{M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1} and space densities of ~9 × 10−7 Mpc−3, consistent with the idea that their constituents may evolve to become massive early-type galaxies in the centers of the rich galaxy clusters we see today

This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect

    Effects of Epitope Modification on T Cell Receptor–Ligand Binding and Antigen Recognition by Seven H-2Kd–restricted Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Clones Specific for a Photoreactive Peptide Derivative

    We tested for antigen recognition and T cell receptor (TCR)–ligand binding 12 peptide derivative variants on seven H-2Kd–restricted cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) clones specific for a bifunctional photoreactive derivative of the Plasmodium berghei circumsporozoite peptide 252– 260 (SYIPSAEKI). The derivative contained iodo-4-azidosalicylic acid in place of PbCS S-252 and 4-azidobenzoic acid on PbCS K-259. Selective photoactivation of the N-terminal photoreactive group allowed crosslinking to Kd molecules and photoactivation of the orthogonal group to TCR. TCR photoaffinity labeling with covalent Kd–peptide derivative complexes allowed direct assessment of TCR–ligand binding on living CTL. In most cases (over 80%) cytotoxicity (chromium release) and TCR–ligand binding differed by less than fivefold. The exceptions included (a) partial TCR agonists (8 cases), for which antigen recognition was fivetenfold less efficient than TCR–ligand binding, (b) TCR antagonists (2 cases), which were not recognized and capable of inhibiting recognition of the wild-type conjugate, (c) heteroclitic agonists (2 cases), for which antigen recognition was more efficient than TCR–ligand binding, and (d) one partial TCR agonist, which activated only Fas (CD95), but not perforin/granzymemediated cytotoxicity. There was no correlation between these divergences and the avidity of TCR–ligand binding, indicating that other factors than binding avidity determine the nature of the CTL response. An unexpected and novel finding was that CD8-dependent clones clearly incline more to TCR antagonism than CD8-independent ones. As there was no correlation between CD8 dependence and the avidity of TCR–ligand binding, the possibility is suggested that CD8 plays a critical role in aberrant CTL function
