V474 Car: A Rare Halo RS CVn Binary in Retrograde Galactic Orbit
We report the discovery that the star V474 Car is an extremely active, high
velocity halo RS CVn system. The star was originally identified as a possible
pre-main sequence star in Carina, given its enhanced stellar activity, rapid
rotation (10.3 days), enhanced Li, and absolute magnitude that places it above
the main sequence. However, its extreme radial velocity (264 km s)
suggested that this system was unlike any previously known pre-MS system. Our
detailed spectroscopic analysis of echelle spectra taken with the CTIO 4-m
finds that V474 Car is both a spectroscopic binary with orbital period similar
to the photometric rotation period, and metal poor ([Fe/H] 0.99). The
star's Galactic orbit is extremely eccentric (e 0.93) with
perigalacticon of only 0.3 kpc of the Galactic center - and its
eccentricity and smallness of its perigalacticon are only surpassed by
0.05%, of local F/G-type field stars. The observed characteristics are
consistent with V474 Car being a high velocity, metal poor, tidally-locked
chromospherically active binary (CAB), i.e.\ a halo RS CVn binary, and one of

Stellar Population Variations in the Milky Way's Stellar Halo
If the stellar halos of disk galaxies are built up from the disruption of
dwarf galaxies, models predict highly structured variations in the stellar
populations within these halos. We test this prediction by studying the ratio
of blue horizontal branch stars (BHB stars; more abundant in old, metal-poor
populations) to main-sequence turn-off stars (MSTO stars; a feature of all
populations) in the stellar halo of the Milky Way using data from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. We develop and apply an improved technique to select BHB
stars using ugr color information alone, yielding a sample of ~9000 g<18
candidates where ~70% of them are BHB stars. We map the BHB/MSTO ratio across
~1/4 of the sky at the distance resolution permitted by the absolute magnitude
distribution of MSTO stars. We find large variations of BHB/MSTO star ratio in
the stellar halo. Previously identified, stream-like halo structures have
distinctive BHB/MSTO ratios, indicating different ages/metallicities. Some halo
features, e.g., the low-latitude structure, appear to be almost completely
devoid of BHB stars, whereas other structures appear to be rich in BHB stars.
The Sagittarius tidal stream shows an apparent variation in BHB/MSTO ratio
along its extent, which we interpret in terms of population gradients within
the progenitor dwarf galaxy. Our detection of coherent stellar population
variations between different stellar halo substructures provides yet more

Awareness and perceptions of electroconvulsive therapy among psychiatric patients: a cross-sectional survey from teaching hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is shown to be effective in many psychiatric illnesses, but its distorted projection by the Pakistani media and its unregulated use by many physicians across the country have adversely affected its acceptability. Given this situation we aimed to assess the awareness and perceptions regarding ECT as a treatment modality among the psychiatric patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a questionnaire based cross-sectional study carried out at 2 tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We interviewed 190 patients of which 140 were aware of ECT. The study showed that the level of education had a significant impact on the awareness of ECT (p = 0.009). The most common source of awareness was electronic and print media (38%), followed by relatives (24%) and doctors (23%). Physical injuries (42%) and neurological (12%) and cognitive disturbances (11%) were the commonly feared side effects. The most popular belief about ECT was that it was a treatment of last resort (56%). Thirty-nine percent thought that ECT could lead to severe mental and physical illness and 37% considered it inhumane. Patients' willingness to receive ECT was dependant on whether or not they were convinced of its safety (p = 0.001) and efficacy (p = 0.0001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We identified a serious lack of dissemination of information regarding ECT by the psychiatrists and the mental health care providers. This may be the result of an inadequate postgraduate training in Pakistan or just a lack of concern about the mentally ill patients. The media seemed to be the major source of information for our patients. We also saw the prevalence of a variety of myths regarding ECT in our society, which we feel may be responsible for the patients' adverse attitudes. Given the widespread applicability of ECT there is a dire need to dispel these misconceptions and improve its acceptability.</p
HER-2/neu diagnostics in breast cancer
HER-2/neu status of the primary breast cancer (PBC) is determined by immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization. Because of a variety of technical factors, however, the PBC may not accurately reflect the metastatic tumor in terms of HER-2/neu status. Recently published guidelines recommend that tumors be defined as HER-2/neu positive if 30% or more of the cells are 3+. Circulating levels of the HER-2 extracellular domain can be measured in serum using a test cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration, and increased serum HER-2/neu levels to above 15 ng/ml can reflect tumor progression. Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas
Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer.
