Progress towards photonic crystal quantum cascade laser
The work describes recent progress in the design, simulation, implementation and characterisation of photonic crystal (PhC) GaAs-based quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). The benefits of applying active PhC confinement around a QCL cavity are explained, highlighting a route to reduced threshold current operation. Design of a suitable PhC has been performed using published bandgap maps; simulation results of this PhC show a wide, high reflectivity stopband. Implementation of the PhC for the device is particularly difficult, requiring a very durable metallic dry etch mask, high performance dry etching and a low damage epilayer-down device mounting technique. Preliminary shallow etched PhC QCLs demonstrated the viability of current injection through the metal etch mask and the device mounting technique. Development of the etch mask and dry etching have demonstrated a process suitable for the manufacture of deep etched PhC structures. All the necessary elements for implementing deep etched PhC QCLs have now been demonstrated, allowing for the development of high performance devices
Event-related potentials and monoamines in autistic children on a clinical trial of fenfluramine
Introduction: As autistic persons have problems with selecting and encoding meaningful stimuli and multi-centre studies (Ritvo et al., 1983, 1986) had reported mild behavioural improvements following treatment with fenfluramine, event-related potential (ERP) stages of information processing were studied in childhood autism as part of a double blind crossover study of the efficacy of dl fenfluramine. .
Methods: Acceptable recordings were derived from midline and 4 lateral sites on the scalp of 7 from 14 young persons with autism who understood the task (6 male, 1 female 5.8-17.7 years-of-age). A three-tone oddball paradigm was presented in a passive and active-task form (72% at 1 kHz, 14% at 0.5 kHz and 14% at 2.0 kHz) under placebo and drug conditions (where each condition lasted 5 months). Eleven patients provided blood and urine samples for monoamine analyses in both conditions.
Results:
a) With fenfluramine treatment blood serotonin decreased and urinary catecholamine levels fell (25-45%, but dopamine utilization (HVA/DA) increased 2-4-fold.
b) Under fenfluramine autistic subjects responded non-significantly faster, with fewer errors of omission and improved /decreased beta criterion (signal detection). [IQ measures increased 7.5 points.]
c) N1 amplitudes (Fz) decreased and latencies increased in the fenfluramine condition.
Early negativity (especially on the right) correlated inversely with HVA/DA actvivity.
Subtraction of the ERPs in nontarget from target conditions showed that the Negative difference (Nd) increased during fenfluramine treatment.
d) P3 amplitudes (especially after the deviants) increased with fenfluramine treatment. But in the difference waveform (active-minus-passive condition) the P3 amplitude was halved. The distribution of the P3 component moved rostrally with treatment.
Conclusions: N1 and P3 components of the ERP were responsive to fenfluramine treament. Treatment appears to have mildly improved early stimulus processing at stages represented by the early negative components, but to have mildly impaired processing at the P3-stage. The N1 / Nd - related improvement seems to be related to increased dopamine activity (cf. neuroleptic-like properties of racemate fenfluramine)
Localized surface states in HTSC: Alternative mechanism of zero-bias conductance peaks
It is shown that the quasiparticle states localized in the vicinity of
surface imperfections of atomic size can be responsible for the zero-bias
tunneling conductance peaks in high-Tc superconductors. The contribution from
these states can be easily separated from other mechanisms using their
qualitatively different response on an external magnetic field.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 2 figs; to be published in PR
Spin-Polarized Transport Across an LaSrMnO/YBaCuO Interface: Role of Andreev Bound States
Transport across an
LaSr_{3}/YBa_{3}_{7}_{3}$/YBCO and Ag/YBCO. In all cases, YBCO is used as bottom layer to
eliminate the channel resistance and to minimize thermal effects. The observed
differential conductance re ects the role of Andreev bound states in a-b
planes, and brings out for the first time the suppression of such states by the
spin-polarized transport across the interface. The theoretical analysis of the
measured data reveals decay of the spin polarization near the LSMO surface with
temperature, consistent with the reported photoemission data.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 3 eps figures included, accepted by Physical Review
Influence of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in normal metal- d -wave superconductor junctions
Tunneling conductance spectra between a normal metal / d-wave superconductor
junction under the presence of bulk impurities in the superconductor are
studied. The quasiclassical theory has been applied to calculate the spatial
variation of the pair potential and the effect of impurity scattering has been
introduced by t-matrix approximation. The magnitude of a subdominant s-wave
component at the interface is shown to robust against the impurity scattering
while that for a subdominant -wave component is largely suppressed with
the increase of the impurity scattering rate. The zero-bias conductance peak
due to the zero-energy Andreev bound states is significantly broadened for the
case of Born limit impurity compared with that of unitary limit impurity.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
WSe2 Light-Emitting Tunneling Transistors with Enhanced Brightness at Room Temperature
Monolayers of molybdenum and tungsten dichalcogenides are direct bandgap semiconductors, which makes them promising for optoelectronic applications. In particular, van der Waals heterostructures consisting of monolayers of MoS2 sandwiched between atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and graphene electrodes allows one to obtain light emitting quantum wells (LEQWs) with low-temperature external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1%. However, the EQE of MoS2- and MoSe2-based LEQWs shows behavior common for many other materials: it decreases fast from cryogenic conditions to room temperature, undermining their practical applications. Here we compare MoSe2 and WSe2 LEQWs. We show that the EQE of WSe2 devices grows with temperature, with room temperature EQE reaching 5%, which is 250Ă more than the previous best performance of MoS2 and MoSe2 quantum wells in ambient conditions. We attribute such different temperature dependences to the inverted sign of spinâorbit splitting of conduction band states in tungsten and molybdenum dichalcogenides, which makes the lowest-energy exciton in WSe2 dark
An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games
"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." Recurrent duplications of the annexin A1 gene (ANXA1) in autism spectrum disorders
Validating the potential pathogenicity of copy number variants (CNVs) identified in genome-wide studies of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) requires detailed assessment of case/control frequencies, inheritance patterns, clinical correlations, and functional impact. Here, we characterize a small recurrent duplication in the annexin A1 (ANXA1) gene, identified by the Autism Genome Project (AGP) study
Symptom-led staging for semantic and non-fluent/agrammatic variants of primary progressive aphasia. Alzheimer's & Dementia
INTRODUCTION: Here we set out to create a symptom-led staging system for the
canonical semantic and non-fluent/agrammatic variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA), which present unique diagnostic and management challenges not well captured by functional scales developed for Alzheimerâs disease and other dementias.
METHODS: An international PPA caregiver cohort was surveyed on symptom development under six provisional clinical stages and feedback was analyzed using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design.
RESULTS: Both PPA syndromes were characterized by initial communication dysfunction and non-verbal behavioral changes, with increasing syndromic convergence and functional dependency at later stages. Milestone symptoms were distilled to create a prototypical progression and severity scale of functional impairment: the PPA Progression Planning Aid (âPPA-Squaredâ).
DISCUSSION: This work introduces a symptom-led staging scheme and functional
scale for semantic and non-fluent/agrammatic variants of PPA. Our findings have implications for diagnostic and care pathway guidelines, trial design, and personalized prognosis and treatment for PPA
