Surveillance of Salmonella in low prevalence swine herds in Denmark
The nation-wide Danish Salmonella surveillance and control program in finisher herds is primarily based on the monitoring of the presence of specific antibodies against Salmonella enterica in meat juice from carcasses
Salmonella serology compared to body weight for finishers and sows
The relation between live body weight and Salmonella OD% for meat juice samples was investigated for finishers. The result was a seagull shaped curve indicating that the risk of being seropositive declines with increasing body weight from 60 to approximately 100 kilos and then rises again
The present diploma thesis deals with the question in which areas of life people with damaged eyesight gain inclusion and exclusion experiences, respectively. Due to the fact that subjective experiences taken from the everyday life of people concerned are involved, six guidelinesupported interviews with adults with damaged eyesight are conducted. Subsequently the statements of the interviewees are subjected to the qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. After having analyzed each single interview, the similarities and the differences between the interviews are worked out in order to refer to the scientific references on the subject, demonstrated in the first part of the thesis
ASAS Light Curves of Intermediate Mass Eclipsing Binaries and the Parameters of HI Mon
We present a catalog of 56 candidate intermediate mass eclipsing binary
systems extracted from the 3rd data release of the All Sky Automated Survey. We
gather pertinent observational data and derive orbital properties, including
ephemerides, for these systems as a prelude to anticipated spectroscopic
observations. We find that 37 of the 56, or ~66% of the systems are not
identified in the Simbad Astronomical Database as known binaries. As a specific
example, we show spectroscopic data obtained for the system HI Mon (B0 V + B0.5
V) observed at key orbital phases based on the computed ephemeris, and we
present a combined spectroscopic and photometric solution for the system and
give stellar parameters for each component.Comment: 83 pages, 63 figure
Effect of an optimised pelleted diet on Salmonella prevalence and pig productivity
The effect of an optimised, wheat based pelleted diet containing barley, sugar beet pulp and organic acids on Salmonella prevalence and pig productivity was investigated in two finisher herds. The optimised diet significantly reduced Salmonella seroprevalence compared to standard pelleted feed and meal feed. In contrast to previous studies, meal feed did not have a significant Salmonella reducing effect in this study. Meal diet but not the optimised diet had a significant negative effect on pig productivity, compared to the standard pelleted diet. Our results show that the optimised diet is a suitable alternative to wheat based pelleted feed or meal feed in reducing Salmonella prevalence in finisher pigs
The Continuing Outburst of V1647~Orionis: Winter/Spring 2011 Observations
We present optical and near-IR observations of the young eruptive variable
star V1647 Orionis which illuminates McNeil's Nebula. In late 2003, V1647 Ori
was observed to brightened by around 5 mag to r'=17.7. In early 2006 the star
faded back to its quiescent brightness of r'~23, however, in mid-2008 it
brightened yet again by ~5 mag. Our new observations, taken in early 2011, show
V1647 Ori to be in an elevated photometric state with an optical brightness
similar to the value found at the start of the 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Optical
images taken between 2008 and 2011 suggest that the star has remained in
outburst from mid 2008 to the present. H-alpha and the far-red CaII triplet
lines remain in emission with H-alpha possessing a significant P Cygni profile.
A self-consistent study of the accretion luminosity and rate using data taken
in 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2011, indicates that when bright, V1647 Ori has values
of 16+-2 Lsun and 4+-2x10^-6 Msun/yr, respectively. We support the premise that
the accretion luminosity and rate both declined by a factor 2-3 during the 5mag
fading in 2007. However, a significant parts of the fading was due to either
variable extinction or dust reformation. We discuss these new observations in
relation to previous published data and the classification schemes for young
eruptive variables.Comment: accepted, A
Risk-based analysis of the Danish pork Salmonella program, past and future
The question of where in the production system to best implement control Salmonella policies often ends up between the farm or the abattoir, as control policies further downstream e.g. the kitchen are difficult to implement. The Danish on-farm program involves classification of herd Salmonella status based on statistically based serological sampling
V456 Ophiuchi and V490 Cygni: Systems with the shortest apsidal-motion periods
Our main aim is the first detailed analysis of the two eclipsing binaries
V456 Oph and V490 Cyg. The system V456 Oph has been studied both
photometrically via an analysis of its light curve observed by the INTEGRAL/OMC
and by the period analysis of all available times of minima. V490 Cyg has been
studied by means of a period analysis only. Many new times of minima for both
systems have recently been observed and derived. This allows us for the first
time to study in detail the processes that affect both binaries. The main
result is the discovery that both systems have eccentric orbits. For V456 Oph
we deal with the eccentric eclipsing binary system with the shortest orbital
period known (about 1.016 day), while the apsidal motion period is about 23
years. V490 Cyg represents the eclipsing system with the shortest apsidal
motion period (about 18.8 years only). The two components of V456 Oph are
probably of spectral type F. We compare and discuss the V456 Oph results from
the light curve and the period analysis, but a more detailed spectroscopy is
needed to confirm the physical parameters of the components more precisely.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, published in A&A: 2011A&A...527A..43
Effect on Salmonella prevalence by feeding sows meal or pelleted feed.
The aim of this study was I: To evaluate the Salmonella reducing effect of feeding meal to sows compared to feeding pellets to sows. 2: To evaluate the effect of the sow feed on the Salmonella shedding of the weaners at approximately 25 kg. There was no overall serological difference between sows fed meal and sows fed pellets over time. Individually there was a statistically significant drop in serology from blood samples taken in the gestation stables to blood samples taken in the farrowing stables. Meal fed sows experienced a drop of 4 OD% and pelleted fed sows had a drop of 6 OD%. This study did not find a significant difference between the Salmonella level of sows fed meal or sows fed pellets. There was a clear relation between the salmonella level of sows and weaners. Only exotic Salmonella serotypes were found
The first light-curve analysis of eclipsing binaries observed by the INTEGRAL/OMC
Three Algol-type binaries in Cygnus constellation were selected for an
analysis from a huge database of observations made by the INTEGRAL/OMC camera.
These data were processed and analyzed, resulting in a first light-curve study
of these neglected eclipsing binaries. The temperatures of the primary
components range from 9500 K to 10500 K and the inclinations are circa 73deg
(for PV Cyg and V1011 Cyg), while almost 90deg for V822 Cyg. All of them seem
to be main-sequence stars, well within their critical Roche lobes.
Nevertheless, further detailed analyses are still needed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, published in New As
