    Magnetic relaxation and magnetization field dependence measurements in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3

    We reported a systematic change in the average magnetic relaxation rate, after the application and removal of a 5 T magnetic field, in a polycrystalline sample of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Magnetic relaxation measurements and magnetization versus field curves were taken from 10 K to 160 K. The long time behavior of the relaxation curves was approximately logarithmic in all cases.     Noninhibitory PAI-1 enhances plasmin-mediated matrix degradation both in vitro and in experimental nephritis

    Plasminogen activator inhibitor-type 1 (PAI-1) is thought to be profibrotic by inhibiting plasmin generation, thereby decreasing turnover of pathological extracellular matrix (ECM). A mutant, noninhibitory PAI-1 (PAI-1R) was recently shown by us to increase glomerular plasmin generation and reduce disease in anti-thy-1 nephritis. Here, in vitro and in vivo studies were performed to determine whether enhanced plasmin-dependent ECM degradation underlies the therapeutic effect of PAI-1R. 3H-labeled ECM was produced by rat mesangial cells (MCs). The effect of wild-type PAI-1 (wt-PAI-1) and PAI-1R on ECM degradation by newly plated MCs was measured by the release of 3H into medium. In vivo, anti-thy-1 nephritis was assessed in normal, untreated diseased and PAI-1R treated rats with or without the plasmin/plasminogen inhibitor, tranexamic acid (TA). wt-PAI-1 totally inhibited plasmin generation and reduced ECM degradation by 76% when exogenous plasminogen was added. Although PAI-1R alone had no effect, PAI-1R in the presence of wt-PAI-1 reversed the wt-PAI-1 inhibition of ECM degradation in a time- and dose-dependent manner (P<0.001). Plasmin activity and zymography were consistent with ECM degradation. Plasmin inhibitors: α2-antiplasmin, aprotinin, and TA completely blocked PAI-1R's ability to normalize ECM degradation (P<0.001). Consistent with the in vitro results, TA reversed PAI-1R-induced reductions in glomerular fibrin and ECM accumulation. Other measures of disease severity were either unaltered or partially reversed. PAI-1R reduces pathological ECM accumulation, in large part through effectively competing with native PAI-1 thereby restoring plasmin generation and increasing plasmin-dependent degradation of matrix components

    Computational modelling and experimental characterisation of heterogeneous materials

    Heterogeneous materials can exhibit behaviour under load that cannot be described by classical continuum elasticity. Beams in bending can show a relative stiffening as the beam depth tends to zero, a size effect. Size effects are recognised in higher order continuum elastic theories such as micropolar elasticity. The drawback of higher order theories is the requirement of addition constitutive relations and associated properties that are often difficult to establish experimentally. Furthermore the finite element method, of great benefit in classical elasticity, has shown limitations when applied to micropolar elasticity. The determination of additional constitutive properties and the computational modelling of micropolar elasticity will be discussed in the context of a model heterogeneous material loaded in simple 3 point bending. The model material was created by drilling holes in aluminium bar in a regular pattern, with the hole axis normal to the plane of bending. The bending tests show that a size effect is present. These results are compared against modelling the detailed beam geometries in the finite element package ANSYS, which again shows the size effect. These two bending test are used to extract the additional micropolar elastic material properties. A comparison is then made against analytical solutions,numerical solutions using a micropolar beam finite element and a micropolar plane stress control volume method.It will be shown that the need for extensive experimental testing to determine the additional constitutive properties may not be necessary with the appropriate use of numerical methods

    Glyphosate, Other Herbicides, And Transformation Products In Midwestern Streams, 2002

    The use of glyphosate has increased rapidly, and there is limited understanding of its environmental fate. The objective of this study was to document the occurrence of glyphosate and the transformation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in Midwestern streams and to compare their occurrence with that of more commonly measured herbicides such as acetochlor, atrazine, and metolachlor. Water samples were collected at sites on 51 streams in nine Midwestern states in 2002 during three runoff events: after the application of pre-emergence herbicides, after the application of post-emergence herbicides, and during harvest season. All samples were analyzed for glyphosate and 20 other herbicides using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The frequency of glyphosate and AMPA detection, range of concentrations in runoff samples, and ratios of AMPA to glyphosate concentrations did not vary throughout the growing season as substantially as for other herbicides like atrazine, probably because of different seasonal use patterns. Glyphosate was detected at or above 0.1 μg/l in 35 percent of pre-emergence, 40 percent of post-emergence, and 31 percent of harvest season samples, with a maximum concentration of 8.7 μg/l. AMPA was detected at or above 0.1 μg/l in 53 percent of pre-emergence, 83 percent of post-emergence, and 73 percent of harvest season samples, with a maximum concentration of 3.6 μg/l. Glyphosate was not detected at a concentration at or above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s maximum contamination level (MCL) of 700 μg/l in any sample. Atrazine was detected at or above 0.1 μg/l in 94 percent of pre-emergence, 96 percent of postemergence, and 57 percent of harvest season samples, with a maximum concentration of 55 μg/l. Atrazine was detected at or above its MCL (3 μg/l) in 57 percent of pre-emergence and 33 percent of postemergence samples

    Comparisons of Statistical Multifragmentation and Evaporation Models for Heavy Ion Collisions

    The results from ten statistical multifragmentation models have been compared with each other using selected experimental observables. Even though details in any single observable may differ, the general trends among models are similar. Thus these models and similar ones are very good in providing important physics insights especially for general properties of the primary fragments and the multifragmentation process. Mean values and ratios of observables are also less sensitive to individual differences in the models. In addition to multifragmentation models, we have compared results from five commonly used evaporation codes. The fluctuations in isotope yield ratios are found to be a good indicator to evaluate the sequential decay implementation in the code.     Bulk Viscous LRS Biachi-I Universe with variable GG and decaying Λ\Lambda

    The present study deals with spatially homogeneous and totally anisotropic locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type I cosmological model with variable GG and Λ\Lambda in presence of imperfect fluid. To get the deterministic model of Universe, we assume that the expansion (θ)(\theta) in the model is proportional to shear (σ)(\sigma). This condition leads to A=BnA=\ell B^{n}, where AA,\;BB are metric potential. The cosmological constant Λ\Lambda is found to be decreasing function of time and it approaches a small positive value at late time which is supported by recent Supernovae Ia (SN Ia) observations.     Curved Branes in AdS Einstein-Maxwell Gravity and Killing Spinors

    We determine the Killing spinors for a class of magnetic brane solutions with Minkowski worldvolume of the theory of AdS Einstein Maxwell theories in d dimensions. We also obtain curved magnetic brane solutions with Ricci-flat worldvolumes. If we demand that the curved brane solution admits Killing spinors, then its worldvolume must admit parallel spinors. Classes of Ricci-flat worldvolumes admitting parallel spinors are discussed.Comment: 11 page

    Exclusive semileptonic B_s decays to excited D_s mesons: Search of D_{sJ}(2317) and D_{sJ}(2460)

    We study the exclusive semileptonic decays B_s->D_{s0}^*\ell\bar\nu and B_s->D_{s1}^*\ell\bar\nu, where p-wave excited D_{s0}^* and D_{s1}^* states are identified with the newly observed D_{sJ}(2317) and D_{sJ}(2460) states. Within the framework of HQET the Isgur-Wise functions up to the subleading order of the heavy quark expansion are calculated by QCD sum rules. The decay rates and branching ratios are computed with the inclusion of the order of 1/m_Q corrections. We point out that the investigation of the B_s semileptonic decays to excited D_s mesons may provide some information about the nature of the new D_{sJ}^* mesons.Comment: 15 pages, 6 eps figures, RevTeX 4, accepted for publication in Phys.
