    A preliminary list of the ants of Utah

    journal articleThe following list of the ants of Utah was prepared from specimens and data now in the Biology Department of the University of Utah. This list is by no means complete, yet it is representative of practically all parts of the state. A few specimens in the collection date back to 1902, and all of these specimens and numerous other specimens in the collection were identified by Professor W. M. Wheeler. Since 1937 the authors have made collections in all parts of the state in an effort to obtain material for this paper. In addition, Mr. Grundmann has made intensive collections and a study of the ants of Salt Lake County as thesis material for a Master's Degree

    Field-induced transition of the magnetic ground state from A-type antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order in CsCo2Se2

    We report on the magnetic properties of CsCo2_2Se2_2 with ThCr2_2Si2_2 structure, which we have characterized through a series of magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. We find that CsCo2_2Se22_2 undergoes a phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state with a N\'eel temperature of TNT_{\rm N} \approx 66 K. The nearest neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic as observed by the positive Curie-Weiss temperature of Θ\Theta \approx 51.0 K. We find that the magnetic structure of CsCo2_2Se2_2 consists of ferromagnetic sheets, which are stacked antiferromagnetically along the tetragonal \textit{c}-axis, generally referred to as A-type antiferromagnetic order. The observed magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment at TT = 1.5 K is found to be only 0.20(1)μBohr\mu_{\rm Bohr}/Co. Already in comparably small magnetic fields of μ0HMM\mu_0 H_{MM}(5K) \approx 0.3 T, we observe a metamagnetic transition that can be attributed to spin-rearrangements of CsCo2_2Se2_2, with the moments fully ferromagnetically saturated in a magnetic field of μ0HFM\mu_0 H_{\rm FM}(5K) \approx 6.4 T. We discuss the entire experimentally deduced magnetic phase diagram for CsCo2_2Se2_2 with respect to its unconventionally weak magnetic coupling. Our study characterizes CsCo2_2Se2_2, which is chemically and electronically posed closely to the AxFe2ySe2A_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 superconductors, as a host of versatile magnetic interactions

    Photon Momentum Transfer in Single-Photon Double Ionization of Helium

    We theoretically and experimentally investigate the photon momentum transfer in single-photon double ionization of helium at various large photon energies. We find that the forward shifts of the momenta along the light propagation of the two photoelectrons are roughly proportional to their fraction of the excess energy. The mean value of the forward momentum is about 8/5 of the electron energy divided by the speed of light. This holds for fast and slow electrons despite the fact that the energy sharing is highly asymmetric and the slow electron is known to be ejected by secondary processes of shake off and knockout rather than directly taking its energy from the photon. The biggest deviations from this rule are found for the region of equal energy sharing where the quasifree mechanism dominates double ionization

    The effect of deconfinement due to finite band offsets on transport through quantum wires with two constrictions is investigated.     Daptomycin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Clinical Strain With Novel Non-synonymous Mutations in the mprF and vraS Genes:A New Insight Into Daptomycin Resistance

    Objectives: Daptomycin (DAP) resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is uncommon but there are increasing reports of the emergence of resistance during DAP therapy. Most clinical DAP-resistant S. aureus isolates investigated carried mutations in the mprF gene. The aim of this study was to identify mutations between a clinical pair of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolates (DAP-susceptible and DAP-resistant). Additionally, the activity of genes previously associated with DAP resistance was assessed. Materials and Methods: Two MSSA isolates from patient with left-sided endocarditis were analyzed by whole genome sequencing (WGS) and reverse transcription-quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). The first isolate, DAP-susceptible, was obtained before initiation of treatment and the second isolate, DAP-resistant, was recovered after 4 weeks of DAP therapy. Results: Comparison of complete genomes of DAP-susceptible and its DAP-resistant variant identified two non-synonymous and one synonymous mutations. The non-synonymous mutations consisted of a S829L substitution in mprF and a T331I substitution in vraS. The RT-qPCR experiments revealed an increased expression of vraS, dltA, mprF, and sceD genes in DAP-resistant variant. Strikingly, the expression of dltA and mprF genes was significantly downregulated by DAP. Conclusion: The mprF and vraS genes were previously associated with DAP resistance, however, none of the mutations described in this study had been previously identified and linked to DAP resistance. Moreover, we provide a new insight into the DAP action on S. aureus, in which the expression of key genes in DAP resistance is decreased by the antibiotic

    A Reply to Cook and Oreskes on Climate Science Consensus Messaging

    In their replies to our paper (Pearce et al., 2017), both Cook and Oreskes agree with our central point: that deliberating and mobilizing policy responses to climate change requires thinking beyond public belief in a scientific consensus. However, they both continue to defend consensus messaging, either because of ‘the dangers of neglecting to communicate the scientific consensus’ (Cook, 2017, p. 1) or because ‘“no consensus”…remains… a contrarian talking point’ (Oreskes, 2017, p. 1). Both highlight previously conducted market research by fossil fuel companies which suggested that scientific uncertainty provided a political weapon in fighting regulation, concluding that incorrect public perceptions of the scientific consensus weaken support for policy action (Oreskes, 2017, p. 2)

    Study of the Negative Magneto-Resistance of Single Proton-Implanted Lithium-Doped ZnO Microwires

    The magneto-transport properties of single proton-implanted ZnO and of Li(7\%)-doped ZnO microwires have been studied. The as-grown microwires were highly insulating and not magnetic. After proton implantation the Li(7\%) doped ZnO microwires showed a non monotonous behavior of the negative magneto-resistance (MR) at temperature above 150 K. This is in contrast to the monotonous NMR observed below 50 K for proton-implanted ZnO. The observed difference in the transport properties of the wires is related to the amount of stable Zn vacancies created at the near surface region by the proton implantation and Li doping. The magnetic field dependence of the resistance might be explained by the formation of a magnetic/non magnetic heterostructure in the wire after proton implantation.Comment: 6 pages with 5 figure
