    Get PDF
The scientific article analyses theoretical fundamentals of commutation in the region from rural to urban areas, highlights its main reasons and examines some aspects of pendulum migration in the region. Both positive and negative consequences of the commutation of the population have been studied. The present population size and the scale of arrival and departure of the population in the context of natural economic areas of Transkarpathion region have been analyzed

Petrykivka Painting: the Questions of Politics, Authenticity and Identity in Modern Ukraine

    Get PDF
This thesis documents Petrykivka painting, a Ukrainian folk art technique, through the lenses of history and modernity, drawing on interviews with core contemporary artists and promoters. Petrykivka artists hold varying opinions regarding the development of the art form and the ways in which it represents both Ukrainian-ness to Ukrainians and Ukrainian culture on the international art scene. By exploring dialogues circulating in the community, I argue that Petrykivka artists feel that what they are doing today is still traditional and authentic, even though the art might look different from a century or more ago and its meaning might have changed, too. Recognizing critical debates around the concept of authenticity, I inquire into the grounds of the artists’ claims. I highlight complex relationships between their flexibility regarding aspects of technique and appearance and their insistence that only an artist with deep connections to the village can create “true” Petrykivka.Master of Art

A study on the interactions between perfluorosulfonic acids and P-glycoprotein

    Get PDF
Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have received a great deal of attention due to the ubiquitous occurrence and persistence in the environment, resistance to degradation, and biological accumulation in wildlife and humans. PFAS are being detected around the globe, raising concerns regarding the toxicity and health risks to humans. Studies have shown that environmental toxicants, including PFAS, can interact with transporter proteins involved in the absorption and distribution, as well as detoxification, of drugs, xenobiotics and other toxicants. In this study, the effects of PFAS of different carbon chain lengths, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS), on the activity of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) were investigated using the Caco-2 cell line model. Additionally, it was investigated whether PFOS, PFHxS and PFBS cross the Caco-2 cell monolayer. Two known P-gp substrates, quinidine and verapamil, were used to inhibit P-gp in Caco-2 cells, to examine whether PFOS, PFHxS and PFBS might be substrates of P-gp. No interaction between the tested compounds and digoxin were observed, suggesting that these individual PFAS did not modulate the activity of P-gp. Nevertheless, it was observed that PFOS, PFHxS and PFBS crossed the Caco-2 monolayer. Inhibition of P-gp by known inhibitors caused a slight decrease in the rate of PFOS and PFHxS, but not PFBS, in the apical to basolateral direction and in the basolateral to apical direction, suggesting that active uptake and efflux might be involved in the transport of PFOS, PFHxS, but not PFBS, across the Caco-2 monolayer

On exact constant in Dzyadyk inequality for the derivative of an algebraic polynomial

Bernstein inequality made it possible to obtain a constructive characterization of the approximation of periodic functions by trigonometric polynomials T_n of degree n. Instead, the corollary of this inequality for algebraic polynomials P_n of degree n, namely, the inequality  ?Pn?nPn||? P_n'|| ? n ||P_n||,  where  ??:=??[?1,1]? · ? := ? · ?_[?1,1]  and   ?(x):=1x2?(x) := \sqrt{1-x^2}, does not solve the problem obtaining a constructive characterization of the approximation of continuous functions on a segment by algebraic polynomials. Markov inequality  Pn?n2Pn||P_n'|| ? n^2 ||P_n||  does not solve this problem as well. Moreover, even the corollary  ?nPn?2nPn||?_n P_n'|| ? 2n ||P_n||,  where  ?n(x):=1x2+1/n2?_n(x) := \sqrt{1-x^2+1/n^2}  of Bernstein and Markov inequalities is not enough. This problem, like a number of other theoretical and practical problems, is solved by Dzyadyk inequality  Pn?n1k?c(s)nPn?ns,|| P_n' ?_n^{1-k} || ? c(s) n|| P_n ?_n^{-s} ||,  valid for each s ? R. In contrast to the Bernstein and Markov inequalities, the exact constant in the Dzyadyk inequality is unknown for all s ? R, whereas the asymptotically exact constant for natural s is known: c(s) = 1 + s + s^2; and for n ? 2s, s ? N, even the exact constant is known. In our note, this result is extended to the case s ? n < 2s. Pages of the article in the issue: 34 - 37 Language of the article: Ukrainia

Stability of Slopes and Embankments of Coarse Man-made Soils

AbstractThe suitability of soils for the construction of subgrade is determined by their road-building properties. For this purpose coarse, sandy and sandy loam soils are the most suitable. Many coarse man-made soils are formed during mining. These soils undergo significant changes in composition, structure and texture of natural minerals under the influence of weather and climatic factors. Coarse man-made soils may differ by petrographic composition and metamorphism of minerals. These multi-component systems are composed of fine-grained components and large particles varying in strength, water and frost resistance. The aggregate strength characteristic was taken as an integrated criterion for the assessment of embankment subgrade based in part on the capabilities of the test and also the need for the creation of a dense structure for multi-component coarse soils. From this, a technological classification for coarse soils was developed. The problem of using coarse soil in embankments is the possibility of soil settlements occurrence due to the large space between the particles and due to the impact of weather and climate factors. For ensuring a stable structure of subgrade, such coarse soils should be either isolated from the influence of weather and climatic factors or the structure of the subgrade should be made dense non-settling properties by means of technological solutions that envisage filling the entire space between the large particles with fine-grained materials (e.g. pit-run fines). The design solutions are developed depending on the type of coarse soil. This will protect the embankment body from the effects of weather and climatic factors, namely: wetting-drying and freezing- thawing. To ensure durability and stability of the embankment slopes, technological solutions for creating a single strong structure were developed. Effective subgrade structures that take into account the characteristics of these materials and ensure their sustainability and stability were developed basing on the results of coal waste research

International Chinese Students: Enhancing the American Learning Experience

    Get PDF
Approximately 975,000 international students are studying in the USA of which one third are from China. Research suggests that Chinese students face unique cross-cultural challenges in addition to the routine challenges faced by non-Chinese foreign students such as  language, customs and exchanges. This study identifies where international Chinese students need help adapting to the American education process as examined through a series of conversations with Chinese students using their social media tool WeChat. It is our belief that studying this issue on a qualitative basis using these conversations will provide insight into the forms of help needed along with how American educators may modify their classroom pedagogy to more fully integrate the Chinese learner into the instructor’s classroom
