Me first? Positioning self in the attentional hierarchy
The attention system that allocates resources across competing aspects of the environment is influenced by biases toward particular types of stimuli, such as cues of threat (e.g., angry-face image), self-reference (e.g., own-face image) and current goals (e.g., food image when hungry). Here, we used dot probe tasks to investigate which of these stimulus types are prioritized in the attentional hierarchy, measuring response latency to dot probes presented in the same location as different face types. In Experiment 1, participants (N = 42) were presented with self, angry and neutral face images in the dot probe task, which revealed a clear attentional bias for self-images over both angry and neutral images. In Experiment 2, each participant (N = 69) was assigned a self, angry or neutral goal image for a secondary monitoring task designed to induce a temporary goal, and this image was included in the stimuli presented in the dot probe task. Again, self-cues were found to produce a strong attentional bias, but images associated with temporary goals were found to be the most effective source of attentional bias. Results are discussed in relation to the relative importance of self, threat and temporary goal cues in the attentional hierarchy
Galaxy emission line classification using 3D line ratio diagrams
Two-dimensional (2D) line ratio diagnostic diagrams have become a key tool in
understanding the excitation mechanisms of galaxies. The curves used to
separate the different regions - HII-like or else excited by an active galactic
nucleus (AGN) - have been refined over time but the core technique has not
evolved significantly. However, the classification of galaxies based on their
emission line ratios really is a multi-dimensional problem. Here we exploit
recent software developments to explore the potential of three-dimensional (3D)
line ratio diagnostic diagrams. We introduce a specific set of 3D diagrams, the
ZQE diagrams, which separate the oxygen abundance and the ionisation parameter
of HII region-like spectra, and which also enable us to probe the excitation
mechanism of the gas. By examining these new 3D spaces interactively, we define
a new set of 2D diagnostics, the ZE diagnostics, which can provide the
metallicity of objects excited by hot young stars, and which cleanly separate
HII region-like objects from the different classes of AGNs. We show that these
ZE diagnostics are consistent with the key log[NII]/H vs.
log[OIII]/H diagnostic currently used by the community. They also have
the advantage of attaching a probability that a given object belongs to one
class or to the other. Finally, we discuss briefly why ZQE diagrams can provide
a new way to differentiate and study the different classes of AGNs in

Probabilistic Clustering of Time-Evolving Distance Data
We present a novel probabilistic clustering model for objects that are
represented via pairwise distances and observed at different time points. The
proposed method utilizes the information given by adjacent time points to find
the underlying cluster structure and obtain a smooth cluster evolution. This
approach allows the number of objects and clusters to differ at every time
point, and no identification on the identities of the objects is needed.
Further, the model does not require the number of clusters being specified in
advance -- they are instead determined automatically using a Dirichlet process
prior. We validate our model on synthetic data showing that the proposed method
is more accurate than state-of-the-art clustering methods. Finally, we use our
dynamic clustering model to analyze and illustrate the evolution of brain
cancer patients over time

On the role of goal relevance in emotional attention: Disgust evokes early attention to cleanliness
Prior evidence has shown that aversive emotional states are characterised by an attentional bias
towards aversive events. The present study investigated whether aversive emotions also bias attention
towards stimuli that represent means by which the emotion can be alleviated. We induced disgust by
having participants touch fake disgusting objects. Participants in the control condition touched nondisgusting
objects. The results of a subsequent dot-probe task revealed that attention was oriented to
disgusting pictures irrespective of condition. However, participants in the disgust condition also
oriented towards pictures representing cleanliness. These findings suggest that the deployment of
attention in aversive emotional states is not purely stimulus driven but is also guided by the goal to
alleviate this emotional state
MicroRNA-135b promotes cancer progression by acting as a downstream effector of oncogenic pathways in colon cancer
MicroRNA deregulation is frequent in human colorectal cancers (CRCs), but little is known as to whether it represents a bystander event or actually drives tumor progression in vivo. We show that miR-135b overexpression is triggered in mice and humans by APC loss, PTEN/PI3K pathway deregulation, and SRC overexpression and promotes tumor transformation and progression. We show that miR-135b upregulation is common in sporadic and inflammatory bowel disease-associated human CRCs and correlates with tumor stage and poor clinical outcome. Inhibition of miR-135b in CRC mouse models reduces tumor growth by controlling genes involved in proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis. We identify miR-135b as a key downsteam effector of oncogenic pathways and a potential target for CRC treatment

Which Anesthesia Regimen Is Best to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality in Lung Surgery? A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
BACKGROUND
One-lung ventilation during thoracic surgery is associated with hypoxia-reoxygenation injury in the deflated and subsequently reventilated lung. Numerous studies have reported volatile anesthesia-induced attenuation of inflammatory responses in such scenarios. If the effect also extends to clinical outcome is yet undetermined. We hypothesized that volatile anesthesia is superior to intravenous anesthesia regarding postoperative complications.
METHODS
Five centers in Switzerland participated in the randomized controlled trial. Patients scheduled for lung surgery with one-lung ventilation were randomly assigned to one of two parallel arms to receive either propofol or desflurane as general anesthetic. Patients and surgeons were blinded to group allocation. Time to occurrence of the first major complication according to the Clavien-Dindo score was defined as primary (during hospitalization) or secondary (6-month follow-up) endpoint. Cox regression models were used with adjustment for prestratification variables and age.
RESULTS
Of 767 screened patients, 460 were randomized and analyzed (n = 230 for each arm). Demographics, disease and intraoperative characteristics were comparable in both groups. Incidence of major complications during hospitalization was 16.5% in the propofol and 13.0% in the desflurane groups (hazard ratio for desflurane vs. propofol, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.46 to 1.22; P = 0.24). Incidence of major complications within 6 months from surgery was 40.4% in the propofol and 39.6% in the desflurane groups (hazard ratio for desflurane vs. propofol, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.71 to 1.28; P = 0.71).
CONCLUSIONS
This is the first multicenter randomized controlled trial addressing the effect of volatile versus intravenous anesthetics on major complications after lung surgery. No difference between the two anesthesia regimens was evident

Open-access platform to synthesize knowledge of ape conservation across sites
Despite the large body of literature on ape conservation, much of the data needed for evidence-based conservation decision-making is still not readily accessible and standardized, rendering cross-site comparison difficult. To support knowledge synthesis and to complement the IUCN SSC Ape Populations, Environments and Surveys database, we created the A.P.E.S. Wiki (https://apeswiki.eva.mpg.de), an open-access platform providing site-level information on ape conservation status and context. The aim of this Wiki is to provide information and data about geographical ape locations, to curate information on individuals and organizations active in ape research and conservation, and to act as a tool to support collaboration between conservation practitioners, scientists, and other stakeholders. To illustrate the process and benefits of knowledge synthesis, we used the momentum of the update of the conservation action plan for western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) and began with this critically endangered taxon. First, we gathered information on 59 sites in West Africa from scientific publications, reports, and online sources. Information was compiled in a standardized format and can thus be summarized using a web scraping approach. We then asked experts working at those sites to review and complement the information (20 sites have been reviewed to date). We demonstrate the utility of the information available through the Wiki, for example, for studying species distribution. Importantly, as an open-access platform and based on the well-known wiki layout, the A.P.E.S. Wiki can contribute to direct and interactive information sharing and promote the efforts invested by the ape research and conservation community. The Section on Great Apes and the Section on Small Apes of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group will guide and support the expansion of the platform to all small and great ape taxa. Similar collaborative efforts can contribute to extending knowledge synthesis to all nonhuman primate species
Substrate protein folds while it is bound to the ATP-independent chaperone Spy
Chaperones assist the folding of many proteins in the cell. While the most well studied chaperones use cycles of ATP binding and hydrolysis to assist protein folding, a number of chaperones have been identified that promote protein folding in the absence of highenergy cofactors. Precisely how ATP-independent chaperones accomplish this feat is
unclear. Here we have characterized the kinetic mechanism of substrate folding by the small, ATP-independent chaperone, Spy. Spy rapidly associates with its substrate, Immunity protein 7 (Im7), eliminating its potential for aggregation. Remarkably, Spy then allows Im7 to fully fold into its native state while remaining bound to the surface of the chaperone. These results establish a potentially widespread mechanism whereby ATP-independent chaperones can assist in protein refolding. They also provide compelling evidence that substrate proteins can fold while continuously bound to a chaperone
The Role of Osteopontin (OPN/SPP1) Haplotypes in the Susceptibility to Crohn's Disease
Osteopontin represents a multifunctional molecule playing a pivotal role in chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Its expression is increased in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of our study was to analyze the association of osteopontin (OPN/SPP1) gene variants in a large cohort of IBD patients.
Genomic DNA from 2819 Caucasian individuals (nâ=â841 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), nâ=â473 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and nâ=â1505 healthy unrelated controls) was analyzed for nine OPN SNPs (rs2728127, rs2853744, rs11730582, rs11739060, rs28357094, rs4754â=âp.Asp80Asp, rs1126616â=âp.Ala236Ala, rs1126772 and rs9138). Considering the important role of osteopontin in Th17-mediated diseases, we performed analysis for epistasis with IBD-associated IL23R variants and analyzed serum levels of the Th17 cytokine IL-22. For four OPN SNPs (rs4754, rs1126616, rs1126772 and rs9138), we observed significantly different distributions between male and female CD patients. rs4754 was protective in male CD patients (pâ=â0.0004, ORâ=â0.69). None of the other investigated OPN SNPs was associated with CD or UC susceptibility. However, several OPN haplotypes showed significant associations with CD susceptibility. The strongest association was found for a haplotype consisting of the 8 OPN SNPs rs2728127-rs2853744-rs11730582-rs11439060-rs28357094-rs112661-rs1126772-rs9138 (omnibus p-valueâ=â2.07Ă10â»âž). Overall, the mean IL-22 secretion in the combined group of OPN minor allele carriers with CD was significantly lower than that of CD patients with OPN wildtype alleles (pâ=â3.66Ă10â»â”). There was evidence for weak epistasis between the OPN SNP rs28357094 with the IL23R SNP rs10489629 (pâ=â4.18Ă10â»ÂČ) and between OPN SNP rs1126616 and IL23R SNP rs2201841 (pâ=â4.18Ă10â»ÂČ) but none of these associations remained significant after Bonferroni correction.
