    Polariton quantum blockade in a photonic dot

    We investigate the quantum nonlinear dynamics of a resonantly excited photonic quantum dot embedding a quantum well in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime. Within a master equation approach, we study the polariton quantum blockade and the generation of single photon states due to polariton-polariton interactions as a function of the photonic dot geometry, spectral linewidths and energy detuning between quantum well exciton and confined photon mode. The second order coherence function g(2)(t,t′)g^{(2)}(t,t') is calculated for both continuous wave and pulsed excitations

    Quantum Monte Carlo study of ring-shaped polariton parametric luminescence in a semiconductor microcavity

    We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the quantum correlations in the parametric luminescence from semiconductor microcavities in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime. As already demonstrated in recent experiments, a ring-shaped emission is obtained by applying two identical pump beams with opposite in-plane wavevectors, providing symmetrical signal and idler beams with opposite in-plane wavevectors on the ring. We study the squeezing of the signal-idler difference noise across the parametric instability threshold, accounting for the radiative and non-radiative losses, multiple scattering and static disorder. We compare the results of the complete multimode Monte Carlo simulations with a simplified linearized quantum Langevin analytical model

    The FRALIT teledetection program, using the ERTS-A satellite, for the oceanic littoral of France

    There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The French Atlantic Littoral program, utilizing data from the ERTS-1 satellite, is considered. It involves teledetection of the French shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel. A description is given of the ERTS-1 orbit and the satellite itself, including the attitude control system, and the data acquisition and transmission equipment. The geographic extent of the area covered by the program is delineated and the subjects studied are enumerated. These include the geomorphology, pedology, hydrology, and vegetation of the maritime marshes; sedimentology, morphology, and hydrology of the intertidal zones; and transport of material in suspension to the mouths of the Seine, the Loire, and the Gironde as a part of the coastal waters study

    PAF and haematopoiesis: III. Presence and metabolism of platelet-activating factor in human bone marrow

    AbstractPlatelet-activating factor (PAF) is a phospholipid compound with major immunoregulatory activities. The present study shows that human bone marrow contains 576 ± 39 pg PAF/ml (n = 35). Bone marrow-derived PAF exhibits the same biophysical and biological properties that synthetic PAF. PAF concentrations in bone marrow are correlated with the granulocyte (r = 0.4, P = 0.02) but not with the lymphocyte (r = 0.24, P = 0.17) and the monocyte (r = 0.12, P = 0.48) counts. In bone marrow PAF is inactivated by a plasma PAF acetylhydrolase activity (48.0 ± 2.3 nmol/min per ml, n = 34). Experiments with [3H]PAF indicate that human bone marrow cells actively metabolize this potent molecule by the deacetylation-transacylation pathway. Results of this investigation indicate the permanent presence of significant amounts of PAF in bone marrow suggesting its putative involvement in the processes of bone marrow cell proliferation and maturation

    Soil contamination following an industrial accident : towards efficient investigations and assessment

    International audienceWhen an industrial accident occurs, e.g. the explosion or the fire of a chemical facility, soil investigations and subsequent risk mitigation generally need to be decided and performed rapidly. This requires specific organisation and tools: Procedures for an immediate and coordinated intervention of relevant actors: industrials, administrations for industrial facilities, emergency and health, local authorities, environmental consultants and laboratories, NGOs. Models and input data on emission, atmospheric transfer and deposition on soil, for an accidental source; investigation plans and adequate soil quality references, guidelines... But the European Seveso legislation, and its application in France and probably in Europe, is focused on the prevention of immediate impacts on health and constructions; and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) legislation deals with the chronic impacts of operating facilities. Thus, post-accidental impacts of industrial accidents are hardly dealt with, the specific organisation and tools are lacking, and when accidents occur, the industrials and administrations concerned are largely unprepared for managing their delayed impacts, first of them on soils

    FAO/WHO GIFT (Global Individual Food consumption data Tool): a global repository for harmonised individual quantitative food consumption studies

    Knowing who eats what, understanding the various eating habits of different population groups, according to the geographical area, is critical to develop evidence-based policies for nutrition and food safety. The FAO/WHO Global Individual Food consumption data Tool (FAO/WHO GIFT) is a novel open-access online platform, hosted by FAO and supported by WHO, providing access to harmonised individual quantitative food consumption (IQFC) data, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). FAO/WHO GIFT is a growing repository, which will serve as the global FAO/WHO hub to disseminate IQFC microdata. Currently five datasets from LMIC are available for dissemination, and an additional fifty datasets will be made available by 2022. To facilitate the use of these data by policy makers, ready-to-use food-based indicators are provided for an overview of key data according to population segments and food groups. FAO/WHO GIFT also provides an inventory of existing IQFC data worldwide, which currently contains detailed information on 188 surveys conducted in seventy-two countries. In order for end-users to be able to aggregate the available data, all datasets are harmonised with the European Food Safety Authority's food classification and description system FoodEx2 (modified for global use). This harmonisation is aimed at enhancing the consistency and reliability of nutrient intake and dietary exposure assessments. FAO/WHO GIFT is developed in synergy with other global initiatives aimed at increasing the quality, availability and use of IQFC data in LMIC to enable evidence-based decision-making and policy development for better nutrition and food safety

    Le problème traité concerne la reconstruction de la distribution 3D de sources radioactives lors d'examens scintigraphiques. Nous proposons une approche de reconstruction permettant d'exploiter les informations issues de capteurs spectrométriques et en particulier les informations portées par le rayonnement diffusé pour améliorer la qualité des images. La communication présente les résultats obtenus par une approche d'inversion s'appuyant sur un modèle précis de la physique de formation des projections en imagerie gamma. Cette méthode a été baptisée SCARECO (scatter recovery)

    Many-body physics of a quantum fluid of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity

    Some recent results concerning nonlinear optics in semiconductor microcavities are reviewed from the point of view of the many-body physics of an interacting photon gas. Analogies with systems of cold atoms at thermal equilibrium are drawn, and the peculiar behaviours due to the non-equilibrium regime pointed out. The richness of the predicted behaviours shows the potentialities of optical systems for the study of the physics of quantum fluids.Comment: Proceedings of QFS2006 conference to appear on JLT
