Ergodic capacity of decode-and-forward (DF) relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems when line of sight is available is analyzed over gamma-gamma fading channels with pointing errors. Novel closed-form approximate ergodic capacity expression is obtained in terms of the H-Fox function for a 3-way FSO communication system when the α-μ distribution to efficiently approximate the probability density function (PDF) of the sum of gamma-gamma with pointing errors variates is considered. Moreover, we present a novel asymptotic expression at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the ergodic capacity of DF relay-assisted FSO systems. The main contribution in this work lies in an in-depth analysis about the impact of pointing errors on the ergodic capacity for cooperative FSO systems. In order to maintain the same performance in terms of capacity, it is corroborated that the presence of pointing errors requires an increase in SNR, which is related to the fraction of the collected power at the receive aperture, i.e. A 0 . Simulation results are further demonstrated to confirm the accuracy and usefulness of the derived results.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech. thesisThinking through queer of color critique, this work explores current debates about intersectionality specifically focusing on how theories of intersectionality impact lived experiences of queer students of color. Utilizing vignettes and personal reflections on dialogues carried out by a university Queer Students of Color group, this thesis demonstrates the complexities uncovered when queer of color subjectivity is thought with intersectionality, assemblages and disidentification. The theoretical and lived tensions of "queerness" raise problematics but also possibilities. The thesis concludes with a discussion of queer possibilities and futurities

Production of ordered silicon nanocrystals by low-energy ion sputtering

    Get PDF
We report on the production of ordered assemblies of silicon nanostructures by means of irradiation of a Si(100) substrate with 1.2 keV Ar ions at normal incidence. Atomic Force and High-Resolution Transmission Electron microscopies show that the silicon structures are crystalline, display homogeneous height, and spontaneously arrange into short-range hexagonal ordering. Under prolonged irradiation (up to 16 hours) all dot characteristics remain largely unchanged and a small corrugation develops at long wavelengths. We interpret the formation of the dots as a result of an instability due to the sputtering yield dependence on the local surface curvatureComment: 4 two-column pages (revtex4), 3 figures (higher quality copies in the printed jrnl. version

A Bayesian Solution to the Behrens-Fisher problem

    Get PDF
A simple solution to the Behrens–Fisher problem based on Bayes factors is presented, and its relation with the Behrens–Fisher distribution is explored. The construction of the Bayes factor is based on a simple hierarchical model, and has a closed form based on the densities of general Behrens–Fisher distributions. Simple asymptotic approximations of the Bayes factor, which are functions of the Kullback–Leibler divergence between normal distributions, are given, and it is also proved to be consistent. Some examples and comparisons are also presented.Open access funding provided by Universidad de Málaga/CBUA

A bayesian approach for one-way ANOVA under unequal variances

    Get PDF
In this report a Bayesian solution to the problem of testing the equality of the means of k independent normal populations with unknown and arbitrary variances is provided. An important issue in the solution of this problem is the determination of groups with equal means, often solved by multiple comparisons, which can lead to results that are difficult to interpret. In order to avoid this drawback, we propose to treat all possible alternatives existing in the alternative hypothesis by considering the set of all possible configurations of the set of k means. This idea is closely related to the statistical pro-blem of cluster analysis. This allows us to reformulate the testing problem in terms of model selection. A hierarchical model is proposed to compute the Bayes factor of all models, as well as the posterior probability of all the possible configurations. Some illustrative examples of the goodness of the proposed solution are presented.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Retention of newly graduated registered nurses in the hospital setting: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Background: There is a gap in the literature on identifying and describing effective interventions for the retention of newly graduated registered nurses in hospital set-tings. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic review has been conducted on this issue.Aim: To identify effective interventions that promote the retention of newly gradu-ated registered nurses in the hospital setting and their components.Design: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 Statement. Methods: Information derived from the PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library databases was reviewed, for the period January 2012–October 2022. Screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted independently by two reviewers. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools were used for descriptive, quasi-experimental and cohort studies. Disagreements between the two reviewers were resolved through discussion. Results: Following the critical appraisal, nine studies were included. The evidence re-veals the heterogeneity of programmes developed in the hospital context to promote the retention of newly graduated registered nurses, clarifies the three competencies to be addressed (core, cross-cutting and specific), their components (programme de-velopment framework, duration, content and support components), and shows sig-nificant improvements after their implementation. Conclusions: This systematic review identifies that either nurse residency or individu-alised mentoring programmes, lasting 1 year, and multi-component, addressing core and specific competencies and including preceptor or mentor components seem to be the most comprehensive and effective in promoting the retention of new nurses in the hospital setting.Relevance to Clinical Practice: The knowledge provided by this review will contrib-ute to developing and implementing more effective and context-specific strategies directed at retaining newly graduated registered nurses and subsequently enhancing patient safety and healthcare costs. No Patient or Public Contribution: Given the study design and focus

Rethinking Foucault’s Care of the Self: Critique and (Political) Subjectivity in the Digital

This thesis aims to rework Foucault’s care of the self so that it can be understood as a political activity that opens the possibility for a new type of subjectivity. I develop and exemplify this claim through an analysis of the digital. Firstly, I focus on Foucault’s ethical work, which I articulate and defend by reading the care of the self through the notions of body, critique and limits, thus envisioning a political activity from which a new subjectivity can emerge. Ultimately, I understand the care of the self to be an embodied critical practice that aims at transgressing the limits of imposed truths and forms of life. The exercise of the care of the self, thus, permits for a conversion of power, which signifies the passing from a moment of subjection to one of subjectivation. Secondly, I employ such arguments in a more practical manner and analyse the digital and the subjection process it enacts. I argue that the digital, which I take as the exacerbated use of the internet through gadgets, is a complex tool-like space characterized by quantification, seclusion and symbiosis, and that such notions arise as a result of the mechanisms that uphold the digital: discipline, mediation of discourse and biopower. However, my interest here is not in these characteristics and mechanisms per se but about the subject they create. I claim that the digital serves to exemplify the making of the useful and docile bodies of the twenty-first century: depoliticized in their utility and docility insofar as they are made to take for granted the imposition of a contingent truth. Thirdly, I then explore how my political reading of the care of the self serves to ‘fight’ the depoliticized digital subject, where I claim that our attention should be directed towards the mundane, the everyday, and the regaining of it through thought exercises, which allow for the subject to rethink that which was once taken for granted and regarded as incontestable. In doing so, I argue for the value of the uncertain and the political possibility that rests within
