Real Time Global Tests of the ALICE High Level Trigger Data Transport Framework
The High Level Trigger (HLT) system of the ALICE experiment is an online
event filter and trigger system designed for input bandwidths of up to 25 GB/s
at event rates of up to 1 kHz. The system is designed as a scalable PC cluster,
implementing several hundred nodes. The transport of data in the system is
handled by an object-oriented data flow framework operating on the basis of the
publisher-subscriber principle, being designed fully pipelined with lowest
processing overhead and communication latency in the cluster. In this paper, we
report the latest measurements where this framework has been operated on five
different sites over a global north-south link extending more than 10,000 km,
processing a ``real-time'' data flow.Comment: 8 pages 4 figure
Mosquito Magnet Âź traps as a potential means of monitoring blackflies of medical and veterinary importance
Mosquito MagnetÂź traps, deployed in widespread parts of England as part of nationwide mosquito surveillance projects, also caught blackflies. As many as 1242 blackflies were caught in a trapping session lasting 4 days. Principal among the species caught were Simulium equinum, Simulium lineatum and Simulium ornatum s.l. As S. ornatum s.l. is a vector that transmits Onchocerca linealis to cattle and S. equinum is responsible for dermatitis ('sweet itch') in cattle and horses, it is suggested that Mosquito MagnetÂź traps could be used to monitor and partially control these pests, as well as nuisance anthropophilic blackflies such as Simulium posticatum that can cause simuliidosis in southern England

An update on the ecology, seasonality and distribution of Culex modestus in England
Culex (Barraudius) modestus is an important vector of West Nile virus (WNV) in Europe and it has the potential to play a bridge vector role in future WNV transmission in the UK. Here we provide an update on the known distribution of the species in England based on adult and larval data, characterise the preferred Cx. modestus larval habitats, and present adult and larval data from sites where the species is known to occur. Culex modestus is primarily found in the south-east of England, particularly in North Kent, the Thames Estuary, and along the Essex coast, and as far east as Orford Ness, Suffolk, and in Rainham Marshes, Essex, in the West. Adult numbers peak in mid-late July, with larval numbers highest in late August / early September. Preferred habitats in North Kent are warm, shallow, narrow ditches, with an abundance of marginal, submerged, and floating vegetation. Such environmental data on the distribution, seasonality and habitat preference of Cx. modestus are critical for informing WNV surveillance programmes, identifying at risk areas (associated with this species) and providing information for a targeted control strategy in the event of WNV transmission
Citizen science versus professional data collection: Comparison of approaches to mosquito monitoring in Germany
Due to the recent emergence of invasive mosquito species and the outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe, research on the ecology and diversity of the mosquito fauna has returned to scientific agendas. Through a nationwide surveillance programme in Germany, mosquitoes have been monitored actively by systematically operated traps since 2011, and passively by the 'MĂŒckenatlas' (mosquito atlas) citizen science project launched in 2012. To assess the performance of both monitoring methods we compared the two respective datasets with regard to habitat coverage, species composition and the ability to detect invasive mosquitoes. The datasets include observations from the beginning of the project until the end of 2017. We found significant differences in species composition caused by land use types and the participants' recording activity. Active monitoring performed better in mapping mosquito diversity, whereas passive monitoring better detected invasive species, thereby using data from private premises scientists usually cannot access. Synthesis and applications. Active and passive monitoring is complementary. Combining them allows for the determination of mosquito diversity, efficient detection of emerging invasive species and the initiation of rapid-response actions against such invaders. The 'MĂŒckenatlas' sets an example for the usefulness of citizen science when included in a national monitoring programme, an approach that may be worth copying for tackling the global spread of arthropod vectors of disease agents
Essential versus accessory aspects of cell death: recommendations of the NCCD 2015
Cells exposed to extreme physicochemical or mechanical stimuli die in an uncontrollable manner, as a result of their immediate structural breakdown. Such an unavoidable variant of cellular demise is generally referred to as âaccidental cell deathâ (ACD). In most settings, however, cell death is initiated by a genetically encoded apparatus, correlating with the fact that its course can be altered by pharmacologic or genetic interventions. âRegulated cell deathâ (RCD) can occur as part of physiologic programs or can be activated once adaptive responses to perturbations of the extracellular or intracellular microenvironment fail. The biochemical phenomena that accompany RCD may be harnessed to classify it into a few subtypes, which often (but not always) exhibit stereotyped morphologic features. Nonetheless, efficiently inhibiting the processes that are commonly thought to cause RCD, such as the activation of executioner caspases in the course of apoptosis, does not exert true cytoprotective effects in the mammalian system, but simply alters the kinetics of cellular demise as it shifts its morphologic and biochemical correlates. Conversely, bona fide cytoprotection can be achieved by inhibiting the transduction of lethal signals in the early phases of the process, when adaptive responses are still operational. Thus, the mechanisms that truly execute RCD may be less understood, less inhibitable and perhaps more homogeneous than previously thought. Here, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death formulates a set of recommendations to help scientists and researchers to discriminate between essential and accessory aspects of cell death
Auditing the Management of Vaccine-Preventable Disease Outbreaks: The Need for a Tool
Public health activities, especially infectious disease control, depend on effective teamwork. We present the results of a pilot audit questionnaire aimed at assessing the quality of public health services in the management of VPD outbreaks. Audit questionnaire with three main areas indicators (structure, process and results) was developed. Guidelines were set and each indicator was assessed by three auditors. Differences in indicator scores according to median size of outbreaks were determined by ANOVA (significance at pâ€0.05). Of 154 outbreaks; eighteen indicators had a satisfactory mean score, indicator âupdated guidelinesâ and âtimely reportingâ had a poor mean score (2.84±106 and 2.44±1.67, respectively). Statistically significant differences were found according to outbreak size, in the indicators âavailability of guidelines/protocol updated less than 3 years agoâ (pâ=â0.03) and âdays needed for outbreak controlâ (pâ=â0.04). Improving availability of updated guidelines, enhancing timely reporting and adequate recording of control procedures taken is needed to allow for management assessment and improvement
