The design of Portuguese political poster: two politics, two discourses

    Get PDF
This paper aims to present a history of the Portuguese political poster in two key moments of twentieth century Portuguese politics, the moment of the establishment of the ‘Estado Novo’ (or New State) i.e., Salazar’s authoritarian and quasi-fascist dictatorship which ran from 1933- 1974, and the period of the Revolution of April 25 of 1974, which overthrew the previous regime. The two distinct ideologies give rise to two contrasting modes of visual discourse. This is particularly evident in posters made in the two revolutionary moments (1933-1938 and 1974-76). These reveal ruptures in relation to the visual discourses of posters made in the periods before and after these dates. The paper shows how the posters offer a particular kind of lens on the two contrasting revolutionary moments; a way of looking at how the two revolutions attempted to communicate to and connect with the Portuguese people in whose name and one whose behalf—ostensibly in the first case, substantively in the second—the revolutions were undertaken. In terms of the understanding of activism and revolutionary graphics a contribution is made to understanding how revolutions of left and right contrastingly 2 present themselves—and how, through the use of poster, they evoke or extol particular kinds of political subjects and political orders

Creativity is an indispensable competence for the future of higher education students. Creative thinking skills play an important role in modern society. Creativity is acknowledged as a crucial aspect of business, research and development or arts. This study presents the assessment results of an intervention using cooperative learning and the conventional teaching method in order to promote creative thinking in higher education. The design used was quasi-experimental pretest and posttest intervention using the Creative Intelligence test (CREA), with experimental and control groups of higher education students of the Communication and Multimedia course in a Linear Algebra class. The participants were 50 students from a Portuguese public university. Results showed that students who participated in the intervention scored significantly higher in the creativity test at the end of the intervention and indicated that creative thinking, and divergent thinking abilities in particular, can be enhanced through the kind of intervention that was proposed in the studyLa creatividad es una competencia indispensable para el futuro de los estudiantes de educación superior.

Students who study abroad either as a part of the curriculum or as their main study period, make interesting research subjects not only in the context of the internationalization of higher education, but also within the broader field of intercultural research. Although this group of students is easily accessible to different research interests, there are – as we, Helena Drawert and Vasco da Silva, will show in this article – only a few qualitative studies on the interior and exterior forms of academic residence abroad. Based on the thematic focus of our research projects, the following paper will demonstrate how the potential of this target group can be used to analyse different phenomena and diverse questions and problems within the field of intercultural research

As a consequence of the Binet formula for balancing, cobalancing, square triangular, Lucas-balancing and Lucas-cobalancing numbers, we provide some formulas for these sequences explicitly, which can have certain importance or applications in most recently investigations in this area. Also we give another expression for the general term of each sequence, using the ordinary generating function

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to study the factors that influence consumer behaviour through brand attachment, in the pet-friendly segment in Portugal. Pet-friendly tourism has stood out as a very recognized and valid tourism and marketing segment, growing worldwide, urging the complex needed advances on tourism practices performance. Methods: The application of the model to a group of 190 respondents carried out in order to analyse the relationships between brand attachment, trust, satisfaction, commitment, loyalty and quality of service. To test our measurement model, data was analysed using the SmartPLS 3.2. Results: Results reveal that quality of the service, satisfaction, trust and commitment had a strong relationship with the loyalty of the respondents. As for the brand attachment, the variables that showed the most influence were satisfaction, trust and commitment. Implications: The research still needs to be empirically applied in pet-friendly tourism settings to enrich their robustness in a cross-cultural tourism experiences, covering a wider spread of abroad tourism destinations and products. This study thus contributes to a better clarity at the theoretical level of brand attachment and consumer behaviour, as well as making it possible to understand from the consumers’ side, which characteristics are part of their decision-making process, granting relevant data that can cooperate in the definition of better marketing strategies

From Binet’s formula of Mersenne sequence we get some properties for this sequence. Mersenne, Jacobsthal and Jacobsthal-Lucas sequences are considered in order to achieve some relations between them, sums and certain products involving terms of these sequences. We also present some results with matrices involving Mersenne numbers such as the generating matrix, tridiagonal matrices and circulant type matrices

Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is an answer to the demands of the current social and economic reality, in a process that seems to favor the learning development in organizations. In this paper this presumption is analyzed. For that, twelve essential features of a learning organization have been determined, analyzed under three categories, grouped in a grid of perception; the BSC concept was also analyzed critically, in the light of these features. Accordingly to the grid, the studied company is characterized in two distinct moments: before starting the BSC project and eighteen months after its beginning. Comparing these two moments, it was assessed how its capacity of organizational learning has evolved. It is concluded that this ability has been developed: the company improved as a learning organization, essentially when observed under two of the proposed categories: organizational environment and leadership.
