    Para uma cultura discursiva em aulas de matemáticas na secundária: Capacitação docente para a equidade no ensino de estudantes bilíngues emergentes

    The continued proliferation of linguistic diversity in US mainstream classrooms, coupled with the language demands of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics instruction (CCSSM), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Principles to Actions (PtA), has prompted educational researchers to identify effective, linguistically relevant practices for preparing secondary mathematics educators adept at meeting the needs of emergent bilingual students. In this article we argue for implementation of teacher education courses in mathematics that infuse “pedagogical language knowledge” as a tool for providing future teachers the skills and dispositions to foster a “classroom culture of discourse.” This call come in light of the discipline-specific language demands of the above-mentioned standards and secondary students’ use of variable linguistic repertoires across and within languages to learn and display mathematical thinking and ideasLa proliferación de la diversidad en los salones de clase en EEUU, unida a las exigencias lingüísticas de los denominados Common Core State Standards for Mathematics y de los estándares Principles to Actions (PtA) del Concilio Nacional de Maestros de Matemáticas, ha motivado a los investigadores en el campo de la educación a que identifiquen prácticas educativas orientadas a la preparación de una nueva generación de maestros de matemáticas aptos para diseñar e implementar un modelo pedagógico equitativo que responda a las necesidades del estudiantado bilingüe emergente. Por ende, en este artículo recalcamos la importancia de impartir cursos de formación docente en matemáticas que potencien un conocimiento de lo que se ha denominado en inglés como pedagogical language knowledge.     COVID19-world: a shiny application to perform comprehensive country-specific data visualization for SARS-CoV-2 epidemic

    Background: Data analysis and visualization is an essential tool for exploring and communicating findings in medical research, especially in epidemiological surveillance. Results: Data on COVID-19 diagnosed cases and mortality, from January 1st, 2020, onwards is collected automatically from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). We have developed a Shiny application for data visualization and analysis of several indicators to follow the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic using ECDC data. A country-specific tool for basic epidemiological surveillance, in an interactive and user-friendly manner. The available analyses cover time trends and projections, attack rate, population fatality rate, case fatality rate, and basic reproduction number. Conclusions: The COVID19-World online web application systematically produces daily updated country-specific data visualization and analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic worldwide. The application may help for a better understanding of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic worldwide

    COVID19-Tracker: a shiny app to analise data on SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Spain

La aplicación web COVID19-Tracker analiza y produce de forma sistemática visualizaciones diarias de los datos de la epidemia de COVID-19 de casos diagnosticados y fallecimientos desde el 24 de febrero de 2020 en adelante. Se han desarrollado tres aplicaciones para: 1) análisis de la tendencia y proyecciones a corto plazo; 2) estimación de la tasa de letalidad; y 3) efecto del estado de alarma sobre la tendencia de datos incidentes.     Systematic Review: microRNAs as Potential Biomarkers in Mild Cognitive Impairment Diagnosis

    The rate of progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is estimated at >10% per year, reaching up to 80–90% after 6 years. MCI is considered an indicator of early-stage AD. In this context, the diagnostic screening of MCI is crucial for detecting individuals at high risk of AD before they progress and manifest further severe symptoms. Typically, MCI has been determined using neuropsychological assessment tools such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) or Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Unfortunately, other diagnostic methods are not available or are unable to identify MCI in its early stages. Therefore, identifying new biomarkers for MCI diagnosis and prognosis is a significant challenge. In this framework, miRNAs in serum, plasma, and other body fluids have emerged as a promising source of biomarkers for MCI and AD-related cognitive impairments. Interestingly, miRNAs can regulate several signaling pathways via multiple and diverse targets in response to pathophysiological stimuli. This systematic review aims to describe the current state of the art regarding AD-related target genes modulated by differentially expressed miRNAs in peripheral fluids samples in MCI subjects to identify potential miRNA biomarkers in the early stages of AD. We found 30 articles that described five miRNA expression profiles from peripheral fluid in MCI subjects, showing possible candidates for miRNA biomarkers that may be followed up as fluid biomarkers or therapeutic targets of early-stage AD. However, additional research is needed to validate these miRNAs and characterize the precise neuropathological mechanisms.Fil: Ogonowski, Natalia Soledad.     Cuidados Paliativos en personas sin hogar

    En Europa, el problema de la falta de vivienda lejos de desaparecer se ha acentuado. Europa enfrenta la ambivalencia de atesorar dentro de sus fronteras los mejores ejemplos de estados del bienestar y a la vez contemplar cómo las desigualdades sociales se acentúan y la escasez de techo y trabajo se perpetúan. Por otra parte, el interés por los cuidados paliativos y por facilitar una muerte digna a las personas ha ido ganando terreno en las últimas décadas. Siendo los cuidados paliativos reconocidos como la respuesta más ponderada, completa y satisfactoria que cabe dar a las necesidades de asistencia que comporta la etapa terminal en la vida de un enfermo. El desarrollo de los cuidados paliativos no ha sido homogéneo en todos los países europeos ni en las distintas comunidades autónomas. El informe The Economist (2015) destacó recientemente un programa pionero de España consistente en la creación de 42 equipos de atención psicosocial y espiritual de paciente con enfermedades avanzadas. Uno de estos equipos ha iniciado de forma pionera un programa para atender a los pacientes sin hogar que se encuentran en situación paliativa o con enfermedades crónicas y/o avanzadas. Este artículo repasa la situación del sinhogarismo en Europa y España, con especial énfasis en la prevalencia y en las causas de mortalidad, así como las especificidades de los cuidados paliativos en las personas sin hogar.     Diseño de mezclas de hormigón reciclado mediante el método Volumen de Mortero Equivalente (EMV): Validación bajo el contexto español y su adaptación al método de diseño de Bolomey

    El nuevo método para el diseño de hormigón con árido reciclado (HAR) es usado para comprobar su posibilidad de uso bajo el contexto español. Primeramente, se realiza una extensa campaña experimental, para analizar las posibilidades de su aplicación, usando dos áridos reciclados de hormigón (ARH) españoles. En la segunda etapa se elabora una adaptación del método a la metodología propuesta por Bolomey (1), con 20% de reemplazo en peso de árido grueso natural (AN) por ARH, para así cumplir con las recomendaciones estipuladas en la Instrucción de Hormigón Estructural (EHE 2008). Para determinar y analizar las propiedades del hormigón, se llevaron a cabo ensayos de asentamiento, contenido de aire, densidades, módulo elástico y resistencias a compresión. Finalmente, se concluye que el uso del nuevo método es viable, y que su adaptación produce hormigones con similares o mejores características que los elaborados para hormigón con árido convencional (HAC) y HAR convencionales.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Androgenic activation, impairment of the monoaminergic system and altered behavior in zebra!sh larvae exposed to environmental concentrations of fenitrothion

    Artículo indizadoFenitrothion is an organophosphorus insecticide usually found in aquatic ecosystems at concentrations in the range of low ng/L. In this manuscript we show that 24 h exposure to environmental concentrations of fenitro- thion, from ng/L to low !g/L, altered basal locomotor activity, visual-motor response and acoustic/vibrational es- cape response of zebra!sh larvae. Furthermore, fenitrothion and expression of gap43a, gfap, atp2b1a, and mbp exhibited a signi!cant non-monotonic concentration-response relationship. Once determined that environmen- tal concentrations of fenitrothion were neurotoxic for zebra!sh larvae, a computational analysis identi!ed poten- tial protein targets of this compound. Some of the predictions, including interactions with acetylcholinesterase, monoamine-oxidases and androgen receptor (AR), were experimentally validated. Binding to AR was the most suitable candidate for molecular initiating event, as indicated by both the up-regulation of cyp19a1b and sult2st3 and the non-monotonic relationship found between fenitrothion and the observed responses. Finally, when the integrity of the monoaminergic system was evaluated, altered levels of L-DOPA, DOPAC, HVA and 5-HIAA were found, as well as a signi!cant up-regulation of slc18a2 expression at the lowest concentrations of fenitrothion. These data strongly suggest that concentrations of fenitrothion commonly found in aquatic ecosystems present a signi!cant environmental risk for !sh communities.This work was supported by the Spanish Government with FEDER Funds (CTM2017-83242-R; D.R.) and the net- work of recognized research groups by the Catalan Government (2017 SGR_902)

    Case report: A combination of nitroglycerin and adenosine proves effective in repairing a cerebral arteriovenous malformation

    Hemorrhage secondary to rupture of a brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) is one of the initial manifestations, and the main cause of, morbidity and mortality in patients with this condition. Current treatment strategies include endovascular embolization with the goal of AVM obliteration and neurological preservation. In the transvenous endovascular embolization procedure, adenosine is the preferred agent to induce temporary hypotension and allow adequate AVM embolization. We describe the intraoperative management of an adenosine-resistant 38 year-old male who underwent a successful intracranial AVM embolization after concomitant administration of gradually increasing doses of nitroglycerin. This report suggests that nitroglycerin infusion can be combined with adenosine boluses to create a pronounced and dose-dependent hypotension in patients partially unresponsive to adenosine alone
