    Robot's Inner Speech Effects on Trust and Anthropomorphic Cues in Human-Robot Cooperation

    Inner Speech is an essential but also elusive human psychological process which refers to an everyday covert internal conversation with oneself. We argue that programming a robot with an overt self-talk system, which simulates human inner speech, might enhance human trust by improving robot transparency and anthropomorphism. For this reasons, this work aims to investigate if robot’s inner speech, here intended as overt self-talk, affects human trust and anthropomorphism when human and robot cooperate. A group of participants was engaged in collaboration with the robot. During cooperation, the robot talks to itself. To evaluate if the robot’s inner speech influences human trust, two questionnaires were administered to each participant before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the cooperative session with the robot. Preliminary results evidenced differences between the answers of participants in the pre-test and post-test assessment, suggesting that robot’s inner speech influences human trust. Indeed, participant’s levels of trust and perception of robot anthropomorphic features increase after the experimental interaction with the robot

    Box Behnken design-based optimized extraction of non-dioxin-like PCBs for GC-ECD and GC-MS analyses in milk samples

    Abstract A multivariate optimization process of the sample extraction procedure by Box-Behnken design through a global desirability function is described for the determination of six non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs # 28, 52, 101, 153, 138 and 180) in milk by GC-ECD and mass spectrometry. Three factors were involved in refining the extraction conditions: the acetone percentage in the extraction mixture, the sample/solvent ratio, and the extraction time. The three-factor design required 26 experiments that were carried out in duplicate and in a randomized order to minimize the bias effects of uncontrolled variables. The optimized factors (acetone percentage: 30%; sample-to-solvent ratio: 0.11 g mL−1; extraction time: 45 min) ensured a low solvent consumption and a reduced extraction time, allowing a rapid and simultaneous preparation of multiple sample extracts. The method was validated according to the European directives (Decision 657/2002/EC, SANTE 2017/11813/EC) through the evaluation of linearity, selectivity, LOD, LOQ, recovery, precision, and ruggedness

    Assessing 3GPP LTE-Advanced as IMT-Advanced Technology: The WINNER+ Evaluation Group Approach

    [EN] This article describes the WINNER+ approach to performance evaluation of the 3GPP LTE-Advanced proposal as an IMT-Advanced technology candidate. The official registered WINNER+ Independent Evaluation Group evaluated this proposal against ITU-R requirements. The first part of the article gives an overview of the ITU-R evaluation process, criteria, and scenarios. The second part is focused on the working method of the evaluation group, emphasizing the simulator calibration approach. Finally, the article contains exemplary evaluation results based on analytical and simulation approaches. The obtained results allow WINNER+ to confirm that the 3GPP LTE Release 10 & Beyond (LTE-Advanced) proposal satisfies all the IMT-Advanced requirements, and thus qualifies as an IMT-advanced system.This work has been performed in the framework of the CELTIC project CP5-026 WINNER+.     Tesis (Profesor de Educación Física, Licenciado en Educación)El presente trabajo de investigación, tiene como eje investigativo la motivación frente a la actividad física extracurricular en adolescentes de 14 años. Para llevar a cabo este proceso investigativo, se intervino en tres Colegios Particulares de la Zona Oriente, Saint Gabriel´s School, Licée Antoine de Saint- Exupéry y Lincoln International Academy, para poder obtener la información necesaria, se realizó una encuesta a un total de 85 adolescentes, 48 varones y 37 damas. La encuesta se basa en 12 preguntas de carácter objetivo, validada por la Profesora Lucia Illanes. Una vez obtenidos los datos, se tabularon mediante gráficos, separados por género y establecimientos. Posteriormente se realizaron análisis, en algunos casos validados mediante citas del marco teórico. Por último se realiza un análisis comparativo de los resultados obtenidos dentro de los tres establecimientos intervenidos

    The prevalence of secondary neoplasms in acromegalic patients:possible preventive and/or protective role of metformin

    Background Acromegaly is a rare disease due to chronic growth hormone (GH) excess and the consequent increase in insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels. Both GH and IGF-1 play a role in intermediate metabolism affecting glucose homeostasis. The association between hyperinsulinemia/impaired glucose tolerance and an increased risk of cancer has been clarified. Insulin has a mitogenic effect through its interaction with the IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) that also binds IGF-1. On the other hand, metformin, an anti-hyperglycemic drug that decreases serum levels of insulin and IGF-1, could have a protective role in the treatment of endocrine tumors. Methods A retrospective, observational, multicenter study in 197 acromegalic patients, receiving/not receiving metformin, was performed to assess whether the prevalence of neoplasms might be correlated with insulin resistance and could eventually be modified by metformin treatment. Results In general, the occurrence of secondary neoplasia among our patients was significantly (pV = 0.035) associated with a positive family history of malignancy and with disease duration; a trend towards significance was observed in patients aged > 50 years. Acromegalic subjects who had undergone surgery showed a lower probability of developing a malignant tumor, whereas a higher prevalence of malignancies was observed in obese patients. No significant statistical difference was found when comparing metformin-treated or -untreated subjects for the presence of a second tumor. More interestingly, a trend towards statistical significance (pV = 0.065) was demonstrated in the metformin-treated group for the onset of a benign neoplasm. Conclusion Metformin could act directly on tumor cell metabolism and may have an adjuvant role in benign lesion progression

    Nusinersen Induces Disease-Severity-Specific Neurometabolic Effects in Spinal Muscular Atrophy

    Intrathecal delivery of Nusinersen-an antisense oligonucleotide that promotes survival motor neuron (SMN) protein induction-is an approved therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Here, we employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to longitudinally characterize the unknown metabolic effects of Nusinersen in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of SMA patients across disease severity. Modulation of amino acid metabolism is a common denominator of biochemical changes induced by Nusinersen, with distinct downstream metabolic effects according to disease severity. In severe SMA1 patients, Nusinersen stimulates energy-related glucose metabolism. In intermediate SMA2 patients, Nusinersen effects are also related to energy homeostasis but involve ketone body and fatty acid biosynthesis. In milder SMA3 patients, Nusinersen mainly modulates amino acid metabolism. Moreover, Nusinersen modifies the CSF metabolome of a more severe clinical group towards the profile of untreated SMA patients with milder disease. These findings reveal disease severity-specific neurometabolic signatures of Nusinersen treatment, suggesting a selective modulation of peripheral organ metabolism by this CNS-directed therapy in severe SMA patients

    Upper Limb Changes in DMD Patients Amenable to Skipping Exons 44, 45, 51 and 53: A 24-Month Study

    Introduction: The Performance of Upper Limb version 2.0 (PUL 2.0) is increasingly used in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) to study longitudinal functional changes of motor upper limb function in ambulant and non-ambulant patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in upper limb functions in patients carrying mutations amenable to skipping exons 44, 45, 51 and 53. Methods: All DMD patients were assessed using the PUL 2.0 for at least 2 years, focusing on 24-month paired visits in those with mutations eligible for skipping exons 44, 45, 51 and 53. Results: 285 paired assessments were available. The mean total PUL 2.0 12-month change was -0.67 (2.80), -1.15 (3.98), -1.46 (3.37) and -1.95 (4.04) in patients carrying mutations amenable to skipping exon 44, 45, 51 and 53, respectively. The mean total PUL 2.0 24-month change was -1.47 (3.73), -2.78 (5.86), -2.95 (4.56) and -4.53 (6.13) in patients amenable to skipping exon 44, 45, 51 and 53, respectively. The difference in PUL 2.0 mean changes among the type of exon skip class for the total score was not significant at 12 months but was significant at 24 months for the total score (p 0.05). Conclusions: Our results expand the information on upper limb function changes detected by the PUL 2.0 in a relatively large group of DMD patients with distinct exon-skipping classes. This information can be of help when designing clinical trials or in the interpretation of the real world data including non-ambulant patients

    Osteoimmunology of Spondyloarthritis

    : The mechanisms underlying the development of bone damage in the context of spondyloarthritis (SpA) are not completely understood. To date, a considerable amount of evidence indicates that several developmental pathways are crucially involved in osteoimmunology. The present review explores the biological mechanisms underlying the relationship between inflammatory dysregulation, structural progression, and osteoporosis in this diverse family of conditions. we summarize the current knowledge of bone biology and balance and the foundations of bone regulation, including bone morphogenetic protein, the Wnt pathway, and Hedgehog signaling, as well as the role of cytokines in the development of bone damage in SpA. other areas surveyed include the pathobiology of bone damage and systemic bone loss (osteoporosis) in SpA and the effects of pharmacological treatment on focal bone damage. Lastly, we present data relative to a survey of bone metabolic assessment in SpA from Italian bone specialist rheumatology centers. The results confirm that most of the attention to bone health is given to postmenopausal subjects and that the aspect of metabolic bone health may still be underrepresented. In our opinion, it may be the time for a call to action to increase the interest in and focus on the diagnosis and management of SpA
