A global synthesis reveals biodiversity-mediated benefits for crop production
Human land use threatens global biodiversity and compromises multiple ecosystem functions critical to food production. Whether crop yield-related ecosystem services can be maintained by a few dominant species or rely on high richness remains unclear. Using a global database from 89 studies (with 1475 locations), we partition the relative importance of species richness, abundance, and dominance for pollination; biological pest control; and final yields in the context of ongoing land-use change. Pollinator and enemy richness directly supported ecosystem services in addition to and independent of abundance and dominance. Up to 50% of the negative effects of landscape simplification on ecosystem services was due to richness losses of service-providing organisms, with negative consequences for crop yields. Maintaining the biodiversity of ecosystem service providers is therefore vital to sustain the flow of key agroecosystem benefits to society. Recoil Polarization for Delta Excitation in Pion Electroproduction
We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions
for neutral pion electroproduction for W=1.23 GeV at Q^2=1.0 (GeV/c)^2,
obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of
these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not
describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well,
indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant
amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and
obtained values for Re(S1+/M1+)=-(6.84+/-0.15)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=-(2.91+/-0.19)%
that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis

Single-spin Azimuthal Asymmetries in Electroproduction of Neutral Pions in Semi-inclusive Deep-inelastic Scattering
A single-spin asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of neutral pions
relative to the lepton scattering plane has been measured for the first time in
deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off longitudinally polarized protons.
The analysing power in the sin(phi) moment of the cross section is 0.019 +/-
0.007(stat.) +/- 0.003(syst.). This result is compared to single-spin
asymmetries for charged pion production measured in the same kinematic range.
The pi^0 asymmetry is of the same size as the pi^+ asymmetry and shows a
similar dependence on the relevant kinematic variables. The asymmetry is
described by a phenomenological calculation based on a fragmentation function

Hyponatremia and hospital outcomes among patients with pneumonia: a retrospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Community-acquired (CAP) and nosocomial pneumonias contribute substantially to morbidity and hospital resource utilization. Hyponatremia, occurring in >1/4 of patients with CAP, is associated with greater disease severity and worsened outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To explore how hyponatremia is associated with outcomes in hospitalized patients with pneumonia, we analyzed a large administrative database with laboratory component from January 2004 to December 2005. Hyponatremia was defined as at least two [Na<sup>+</sup>] < 135 mEq/L within 24 hours of admission value.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 7,965 patients with pneumonia, 649 (8.1%) with hyponatremia were older (72.4 ± 15.7 vs. 68.0 ± 22.0, p < 0.01), had a higher mean Deyo-Charlson Comorbidity Index Score (1.7 ± 1.7 vs. 1.6 ± 1.6, p = 0.02), and higher rates of ICU (10.0% vs. 6.3%, p < 0.001) and MV (3.9% vs. 2.3%, p = 0.01) in the first 48 hours of hospitalization than patients with normal sodium. Hyponatremia was associated with an increased ICU (6.3 ± 5.6 vs. 5.3 ± 5.1 days, p = 0.07) and hospital lengths of stay (LOS, 7.6 ± 5.3 vs. 7.0 ± 5.2 days, p < 0.001) and a trend toward increased hospital mortality (5.4% vs. 4.0%, p = 0.1). After adjusting for confounders, hyponatremia was associated with an increased risk of ICU (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.20â2.08), MV (OR 1.75 95% CI 1.13â2.69), and hospital death (OR 1.3, 95% CI 0.90â1.87) and with increases of 0.8 day to ICU and 0.3 day to hospital LOS, and over $1,300 to total hospital costs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Hyponatremia is common among hospitalized patients with pneumonia and is associated with worsened clinical and economic outcomes. Studies in this large population are needed to explore whether prompt correction of [Na<sup>+</sup>] may impact these outcomes.</p
Kava and ethno-cultural identity in Oceania
Garibaldi and Turner (Ecol Soc 9:1, 5, 2004) explain the role that particular plants play in facilitating the shared ancestry, practices, and social experience of an ethnicity. This can include spiritual connections, cultural expression and practice, ceremony, exchange, linguistic reflection, socialization, and medicinal and/or dietary systems. They term these plants âcultural keystone speciesâ and icons of identity, plants that if removed would cause some disruptions to the cultural practices and identity of an ethnic group. Undoubtedly, kava (Piper methysticum) is the cultural keystone species for many Oceanic and Pacific peoples, a âdifferentiating element of common cultureâ (Zagefka, Ethnicity, concepts of. In: Smith AD, Hou X, Stone J, Dennis R, Rizova P (eds) The Wiley Blackwell encyclopedia of race, ethnicity, and nationalism. West Wiley, Sussex, pp 761â763, 2016) informing their ethno-cultural identity. That influence is also extending to new non-Pacific Island user groups who have embraced elements of kava ethno-cultural identity in what has been termed diasporic identity formation in reverse. This chapter will discuss kava with specific reference to ethnic positionality in Fiji while recognizing the tensions from inside and outside the region that support and threaten the continuance of the kava drinking tradition
Clinical features and outcomes of elderly hospitalised patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure or both
Background and objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure (HF) mutually increase the risk of being present in the same patient, especially if older. Whether or not this coexistence may be associated with a worse prognosis is debated. Therefore, employing data derived from the REPOSI register, we evaluated the clinical features and outcomes in a population of elderly patients admitted to internal medicine wards and having COPD, HF or COPDâ+âHF. Methods: We measured socio-demographic and anthropometric characteristics, severity and prevalence of comorbidities, clinical and laboratory features during hospitalization, mood disorders, functional independence, drug prescriptions and discharge destination. The primary study outcome was the risk of death. Results: We considered 2,343 elderly hospitalized patients (median age 81 years), of whom 1,154 (49%) had COPD, 813 (35%) HF, and 376 (16%) COPDâ+âHF. Patients with COPDâ+âHF had different characteristics than those with COPD or HF, such as a higher prevalence of previous hospitalizations, comorbidities (especially chronic kidney disease), higher respiratory rate at admission and number of prescribed drugs. Patients with COPDâ+âHF (hazard ratio HR 1.74, 95% confidence intervals CI 1.16-2.61) and patients with dementia (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.06-2.90) had a higher risk of death at one year. The Kaplan-Meier curves showed a higher mortality risk in the group of patients with COPDâ+âHF for all causes (pâ=â0.010), respiratory causes (pâ=â0.006), cardiovascular causes (pâ=â0.046) and respiratory plus cardiovascular causes (pâ=â0.009). Conclusion: In this real-life cohort of hospitalized elderly patients, the coexistence of COPD and HF significantly worsened prognosis at one year. This finding may help to better define the care needs of this population
The Development of a Fuzzy Expert System for the Analysis of Umbilical Cord Blood
An assessment of neonatal outcome may be obtained from analysis of blood in the umbilical cord of an infant immediately after delivery. This can provide information on the health of the newborn infant and guide requirements for neonatal care, but there are problems with the technique. Samples frequently contain errors in one or more of the important parameters, preventing accurate interpretation and many clinical staff lack the expert knowledge required to interpret results. The development and validation of an expert system to overcome these difficulties is described. The initial development utilised conventional `crisp' logic within the rule base and this system was evaluated to commercial release. This expert system validates the raw data, provides an interpretation of the results for clinicians and archives all the results, including the quality control and calibration data, for permanent storage. Subsequent development went on to incorporate fuzzy logic into part of the expert system knowledge base, but tests of this preliminary fuzzy system showed that it performed worse than the original crisp expert system. A tuning algorithm was then employed to modify the fuzzy model and this process resulted in improved performance to a level comparable to clinicians and superior to the crisp system. Finally, the entire knowledge base was converted to utilise fuzzy logic and this `integrated' fuzzy expert system was validated against international expert opinion
