    Composite fermions from the algebraic point of view

    Composite fermion wavefuctions have been used to describe electrons in a strong magnetic field. We show that the polynomial part of these wavefunctions can be obtained by applying a normal ordered product of suitably defined annihilation and creation operators to an even power of the Vandermonde determinant, which can been considered as a kind of a non-trivial Fermi sea. In the case of the harmonic interaction we solve the system exactly in the lowest Landau level. The solution makes explicit the boson-fermion correspondence proposed recently.Comment: 11 pages 1 figur

    Reaaliaikatutkimus jälkitavujen vokaalienvälisen h:n variaatiosta Halsuan puhekielessä

    Tiivistelmä. Pro gradu -tutkielmassani olen tutkinut jälkitavujen vokaalienvälisen h:n variaatiota Halsuan puhekielessä. Olen tarkastellut h:n esiintymistä muotoryhmittäin sekä sekventiaalisesti. Olen pyrkinyt selvittämään, miten h varioi synkronisesti eri ikäryhmissä ja osa-aineistoissa. Tutkimukseni teoreettinen viitekehys muodostuu sosiolingvistiikasta ja dialektologiasta. Kyseessä on reaaliaikametodiin perustuva trenditutkimus. Aineisto koostuu kahdentoista informantin haastatteluista. Aineisto jakautuu kahteen osaan: vanhaan ja uuteen aineistoon. Molemmissa osa-aineistoissa on kuusi informanttia. Vanhan aineiston informantit ovat syntyneet 1800–1900-lukujen taitteessa, ja aineisto on kerätty vuonna 1969. Uuden aineiston muodostavat keski-ikäiset ja nuoret informantit. Keski-ikäiset informantit ovat syntyneet 1960-luvulla ja 1960–70-lukujen taitteessa, nuoret informantit 1990-luvulla. Olen kerännyt uuden aineiston vuonna 2016. Tutkimuksessani on käynyt ilmi, että jälkitavujen vokaalienvälinen h on väistyvä kielenpiirre Halsuan puhekielessä. Katotendenssi ilmenee osa-aineistojen välisistä eroista. Uuden aineiston informanteilla h edustuu huomattavasti vähemmän kuin vanhan aineiston informanteilla. Lisäksi uuden aineiston keski-ikäisten informanttien puheessa h on säilynyt melko usein, kun taas nuorilla informanteilla h esiintyy harvoin. Idiolekteittaista variaatiota kuitenkin ilmenee molemmissa ikäryhmissä ja osa-aineistoissa. Muotoryhmittäisestä tarkastelusta käy ilmi, että h:n säilymäprosentti on suurin MA-infinitiivin illatiivissa ennen passiivin preesensiä, passiivin preteritiä ja kolmannen persoonan possessiivisuffiksia -hVn. Tilastoiduista muotoryhmistä selvästi vähiten h edustuu kAAn-liitepartikkelissa. Sekventiaalisessa tarkastelussa esiin nousee (C)VCVhV-jono (kylähän > kylhän), jossa h on säilynyt useimmin. Toiseksi useimmin h esiintyy (C)V(C)CCVhV-jonossa (rantahan > ranthan) ennen (C)VV(C)CVhV-jonoa (kouluhun > koulhun). Kaikissa fonotaktisissa asemissa on sellaisia sananmuotoja, joihin h on kiteytynyt eräillä puhujilla. Kiteytyminen on idiolektikohtaista. Tuloksien perusteella Halsualla on käynnissä jälkitavujen vokaalienvälistä h:ta koskeva yleiskielistymismuutos, jonka etenemisnopeus olisi mielenkiintoista selvittää nykyistä suuremmalla otannalla. Murrealueen pitäjittäinen vertailu olisi myös paikallaan. Lisäksi murrealueen omaleimaisia kielenpiirteitä voisi tutkia. Sopiva aihe voisi olla ts-konsonanttiyhtymän vaihtelemattoman ss-variantin tarkastelu, samoin sen ja jälkitavujen vokaalienvälisen h:n vertailu keskenään

    Dipole Oscillations of a Fermi Gas in a Disordered Trap: Damping and Localization

    We theoretically study the dipole oscillations of an ideal Fermi gas in a disordered trap. We show that even weak disorder induces strong damping of the oscillations and we identify a metal-insulator crossover. For very weak disorder, we show that damping results from a dephasing effect related to weak random perturbations of the energy spectrum. For increasing disorder, we show that the Fermi gas crosses over to an insulating regime characterized by strong-damping due to the proliferation of localized states.Comment: published as EPL 88 (2009) 3000

    The rate of nitrite reduction in leaves as indicated by O2 and CO2 exchange during photosynthesis

    Light response (at 300 ppm CO2 and 10–50 ppm O2 in N2) and CO2 response curves [at absorbed photon fluence rate (PAD) of 550 μmol m−2 s−1] of O2 evolution and CO2 uptake were measured in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) leaves grown on either NO3− or NH4+ as N source and in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), and amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) leaves grown on NH4NO3. Photosynthetic O2 evolution in excess of CO2 uptake was measured with a stabilized zirconia O2 electrode and an infrared CO2 analyser, respectively, and the difference assumed to represent the rate of electron flow to acceptors alternative to CO2, mainly NO2−, SO42−, and oxaloacetate. In NO3−-grown tobacco, as well as in sorghum, amaranth, and young potato, the photosynthetic O2–CO2 flux difference rapidly increased to about 1 μmol m−2 s−1 at very low PADs and the process was saturated at 50 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. At higher PADs the O2–CO2 flux difference continued to increase proportionally with the photosynthetic rate to a maximum of about 2 μmol m−2 s−1. In NH4+-grown tobacco, as well as in potato during tuber filling, the low-PAD component of surplus O2 evolution was virtually absent. The low-PAD phase was ascribed to photoreduction of NO2− which successfully competes with CO2 reduction and saturates at a rate of about 1 μmol O2 m−2 s−1 (9% of the maximum O2 evolution rate). The high-PAD component of about 1 μmol O2 m−2 s−1, superimposed on NO2− reduction, may represent oxaloacetate reduction.     Spacelike Singularities and Hidden Symmetries of Gravity

    We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space, revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite) sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras, suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theories. Our presentation is aimed to be a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the subject, with all the relevant mathematical background material introduced and explained in detail. We also review attempts at making the infinite-dimensional symmetries manifest, through the construction of a geodesic sigma model based on a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra. An explicit example is provided for the case of the hyperbolic algebra E10, which is conjectured to be an underlying symmetry of M-theory. Illustrations of this conjecture are also discussed in the context of cosmological solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity.Comment: 228 pages. Typos corrected. References added.     QTL for phytosterol and sinapate ester content in Brassica napus L. collocate with the two erucic acid genes

    Improving oil and protein quality for food and feed purposes is an important goal in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) breeding programs. Rapeseed contains phytosterols, used to enrich food products, and sinapate esters, which are limiting the utilization of rapeseed proteins in the feed industry. Increasing the phytosterol content of oil and lowering sinapate ester content of meal could increase the value of the oilseed rape crop. The objective of the present study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for phytosterol and sinapate ester content in a winter rapeseed population of 148 doubled haploid lines, previously found to have a large variation for these two traits. This population also segregated for the two erucic acid genes. A close negative correlation was found between erucic acid and phytosterol content (Spearman’s rank correlation, rs = −0.80**). For total phytosterol content, three QTL were detected, explaining 60% of the genetic variance. The two QTL with the strongest additive effects were mapped on linkage groups N8 and N13 within the confidence intervals of the two erucic acid genes. For sinapate ester content four QTL were detected, explaining 53% of the genetic variance. Again, a close negative correlation was found between erucic acid and sinapate ester content (rs = −0.66**) and the QTL with the strongest additive effects mapped on linkage groups N8 and N13 within the confidence intervals of the two erucic acid genes. The results suggests, that there is a pleiotropic effect of the two erucic acid genes on phytosterol and sinapate ester content; the effect of the alleles for low erucic acid content is to increase phytosterol and sinapate ester content. Possible reasons for this are discussed based on known biosynthetic pathways

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient that is both essential and rate limiting for plant growth and seed production. Glutamine synthetase (GS), occupies a central position in nitrogen assimilation and recycling, justifying the extensive number of studies that have been dedicated to this enzyme from several plant sources. All plants species studied to date have been reported as containing a single, nuclear gene encoding a plastid located GS isoenzyme per haploid genome. This study reports the existence of a second nuclear gene encoding a plastid located GS in <it>Medicago truncatula</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This study characterizes a new, second gene encoding a plastid located glutamine synthetase (GS2) in <it>M. truncatula</it>. The gene encodes a functional GS isoenzyme with unique kinetic properties, which is exclusively expressed in developing seeds. Based on molecular data and the assumption of a molecular clock, it is estimated that the gene arose from a duplication event that occurred about 10 My ago, after legume speciation and that duplicated sequences are also present in closely related species of the Vicioide subclade. Expression analysis by RT-PCR and western blot indicate that the gene is exclusively expressed in developing seeds and its expression is related to seed filling, suggesting a specific function of the enzyme associated to legume seed metabolism. Interestingly, the gene was found to be subjected to alternative splicing over the first intron, leading to the formation of two transcripts with similar open reading frames but varying 5' UTR lengths, due to retention of the first intron. To our knowledge, this is the first report of alternative splicing on a plant GS gene.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study shows that <it>Medicago truncatula </it>contains an additional GS gene encoding a plastid located isoenzyme, which is functional and exclusively expressed during seed development. Legumes produce protein-rich seeds requiring high amounts of nitrogen, we postulate that this gene duplication represents a functional innovation of plastid located GS related to storage protein accumulation exclusive to legume seed metabolism.</p

    Towards the genetic architecture of seed lipid biosynthesis and accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana

    We report the quantitative genetic analysis of seed oil quality and quantity in six Arabidopsis thaliana recombinant inbred populations, in which the parent accessions were from diverse geographical origins, and were selected on the basis of variation for seed oil content and lipid composition. Although most of the biochemical steps involved in lipid biosynthesis are known and the key genes have been identified, the regulation of the processes that results in the final oil composition and total amount is not understood. By using physically anchored markers it was possible to compare results across populations. A total of 219 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified, of which 81 were significant at P<0.001. Some of these colocalise with QTLs identified previously, but many novel QTLs were also identified. The results highlight the importance of studying traits in multiple populations, which will lead to a better understanding of the contribution that natural variation makes to the genetic architecture of a phenotype

    Acute childhood diarrhoea in northern Ghana: epidemiological, clinical and microbiological characteristics

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute diarrhoea is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Its microbiological causes and clinico-epidemiological aspects were examined during the dry season 2005/6 in Tamale, urban northern Ghana.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Stool specimens of 243 children with acute diarrhoea and of 124 control children were collected. Patients were clinically examined, and malaria and anaemia were assessed. Rota-, astro-, noro- and adenoviruses were identified by (RT-) PCR assays. Intestinal parasites were diagnosed by microscopy, stool antigen assays and PCR, and bacteria by culturing methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Watery stools, fever, weakness, and sunken eyes were the most common symptoms in patients (mean age, 10 months). Malaria occurred in 15% and anaemia in 91%; underweight (22%) and wasting (19%) were frequent. Intestinal micro-organisms were isolated from 77% of patients and 53% of controls (<it>P </it>< 0.0001). The most common pathogens in patients were rotavirus (55%), adenovirus (28%) and norovirus (10%); intestinal parasites (5%) and bacteria (5%) were rare. Rotavirus was the only pathogen found significantly more frequently in patients than in controls (odds ratio 7.7; 95%CI, 4.2–14.2), and was associated with young age, fever and watery stools. Patients without an identified cause of diarrhoea more frequently had symptomatic malaria (25%) than those with diagnosed intestinal pathogens (12%, <it>P </it>= 0.02).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rotavirus-infection is the predominant cause of acute childhood diarrhoea in urban northern Ghana. The abundance of putative enteropathogens among controls may indicate prolonged excretion or limited pathogenicity. In this population with a high burden of diarrhoeal and other diseases, sanitation, health education, and rotavirus-vaccination can be expected to have substantial impact on childhood morbidity.</p
