This paper assesses Spanish technical journals as sources of information to recover the nation’s cultural heritage. To this end, a case study was conducted of cinema theatres, buildings erected as distinctive structures essentially in the nineteen twenties through the nineteen sixties. The method used to evaluate these buildings consisted in a bibliographic and documentary review of periodicals, as well as other papers relating to the history of these buildings, to ultimately select three journals for study: Cortijos y Rascacielos, Arquitectura/Revista Nacional de Arquitectura and Informes de la Construcción, the three that devoted most space to that type of architecture in the five decades mentioned. A comparative study of these periodicals revealed the importance of their use in connection with the Cultural Heritage, observing the emphasis placed on the characteristics and peculiarities of the works involved from the standpoint of construction, even over other factors relating to the characteristics that define and differentiate these journals.

At Least 23 Genera Instead of One: The Case of Iris L. s.l. (Iridaceae)

    Get PDF
Background: Iris L. s.l. is one of the most diverse and well-known genera in the Asparagales, with approximately 250–300 circumscribed species and significant economic impact. The taxonomy of the genus has suffered dramatic changes in the last century, particularly in the last decades after the application of molecular techniques. As a result several contrasting systematic arrangements are currently available to taxonomists. Many genera that were split from Iris s.str. in the past, on the basis of morphology (e.g., Hermodactylus, Iridodictyum, Juno, Pardanthopsis, and Xiphion, among others), are now a priori re-included in a very widely circumscribed Iris s.l. (incl. Belamcanda). This resulted in a more heterogeneous genus that is more difficult to define on morphological grounds. Testing congruence between taxonomic treatments and the results of recent molecular studies of Iris has never been performed, mostly due to the lack of proper taxonomic context. Results: We generated several conventional phylogenies for Iris & outgroups using extensive sampling of taxa (187) and characters (10 plastid loci). We demonstrate that the natural history of Iris, written either as conventional molecular phylogenies or, if viewing in the context of the comparative approach, as a nested most parsimonious hierarchy of patterns, appear to be fully congruent with the narrow taxonomical treatment of the genus, restricted to the rhizomatous "bearded" taxa. The resulting topologies place Belamcanda, Pardanthopsis, and Gattenhofia as sisters to Iris s.str. and genus Siphonostylis as sister to Iris s.l. Conclusion: The present study clearly justifies the splitting of Iris s.l. into at least 23 genera, 18 of which have already been accepted in the past by numerous authorities. These genera are characterized by unique combinations of partly overlapping morphological characters and biogeography. Moreover, nearly the same entities, which we here recognize at a generic rank, were for centuries frequently referred to by horticulturists as "working-name" groups

Radiative properties of highly magnetized isolated neutron star surfaces and approximate treatment of absorption features in their spectra

In the X-ray spectra of most X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) absorption features with equivalent widths (EWs) of 50 -- 200 eV are observed. We theoretically investigate different models to explain absorption features and compare their properties with the observations. We consider various theoretical models for the magnetized neutron star surface: naked condensed iron surfaces and partially ionized hydrogen model atmospheres, including semi-infinite and thin atmospheres above a condensed surface. The properties of the absorption features (especially equivalent widths) and the angular distributions of the emergent radiation are described for all models. A code for computing light curves and integral emergent spectra of magnetized neutron stars is developed. We assume a dipole surface magnetic field distribution with a possible toroidal component and corresponding temperature distribution. A model with two uniform hot spots at the magnetic poles can also be employed. Light curves and spectra of highly magnetized neutron stars with parameters typical for XDINSs are computed using different surface temperature distributions and various local surface models. Spectra of magnetized model atmospheres are approximated by diluted blackbody spectra with one or two Gaussian lines having parameters, which allow us to describe the model absorption features. To explain the prominent absorption features in the soft X-ray spectra of XDINSs a thin atmosphere above the condensed surface can be invoked, whereas a strong toroidal magnetic field component on the XDINS surfaces can be excluded.Comment: 54 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&

The article discusses the conclusions reached during the 2nd CONGRESS ON CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH held on 22 and 24 May 2008 at the Eduardo Torroja Institute for Construction Science, a Spanish National Research Council body. The Congress was designed to be a new encounter for the exchange of opinions among all the public and private research institutions, as well as the companies and professionals, working in the field and a forum for debate on research and innovation needs in the construction industry. The Congress also constituted an opportunity for disseminating and discussing research underway or in the planning, both to encourage new research endeavours and coordinate the advances made. The text analyzes the papers submitted, first globally, indicating the percentage addressing each subject area compared to the first (2005) edition of the Congress, and then separately, with a list of the respective conclusions. Phase resolved spectroscopic study of the isolated neutron star RBS 1223 (1RXS J130848.6+212708)

The data from all observations of RBS 1223 (1RXS J130848.6+212708) conducted by XMM-Newton EPIC pn with the same instrumental setup in 2003-2007 were combined to form spin-phase resolved spectra. A number of complex models of neutron stars with strongly magnetized (Bpole10131014B_{pole} 10^{13}-10^{14} G) surface, with temperature and magnetic field distributions around magnetic poles, and partially ionized hydrogen thin atmosphere above it have been implemented into the X-ray spectral fitting package XSPEC for simultaneous fitting of phase-resolved spectra. A Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo (MCMC) approach is also applied to verify results of fitting and estimating in multi parameter models. The spectra in different rotational phase intervals and light curves in different energy bands with high S/N ratio show a high complexity. The spectra can be parameterized with a Gaussian absorption line superimposed on a blackbody spectrum, while the light curves with double-humped shape show strong dependence of pulsed fraction upon the energy band (13%-42%), which indicates that radiation emerges from at least two emitting areas. A model with condensed iron surface and partially ionized hydrogen thin atmosphere above it allows us to fit simultaneously the observed general spectral shape and the broad absorption feature observed at 0.3 keV in different spin phases of RBS 1223. It allowed to constrain some physical properties of X-ray emitting areas, i.e. the temperatures (Tp1 105T_{p1} ~ 105 eV, Tp2 99T_{p2} ~ 99 eV), magnetic field strengths (Bp1=Bp2 8.6x1013B_{p1}= B_{p2} ~ 8.6x10^{13}G) at the poles, and their distributions parameters (a10.61,a20.29a_{1} 0.61, a_{2} 0.29, indicating an absence of strong toroidal magnetic field component). In addition, it puts some constraints on the geometry of the emerging X-ray emission and gravitational redshift (z=0.160.01+0.03z=0.16^{+0.03}_{-0.01}) of RBS 1223.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics accepte

Pòster presentat a EMBO - EMBL Symposia Multiomics to Mechanisms - Challenges in Data Integration. September (11th – 13th 2019 European Molecular Biology Laboratory. Heidelberg, Germany)Tobacco smoking (Figure 1) is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and appears to have a multiplicative interaction with the other major CVD risk factors (lipids, hypertension, diabetes and others present in the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Several omics have analyzed the separate effects of tobacco smoking on the genome, epigenome, transcriptome, metabolome, etc. However an integrated omics approach can help to better understand the crosstalk between tobacco smoking and the genome

Pòster presentat al congrés "Understanding Human Diseases Through Metabolomics: Interactions Among the Genome, Proteome, Gut Microbiome and Nutrition", Metabolomics and Human Health, Gordon Research Conference (February 3 - 8, 2019 Ventura, CA, United States)Diet is one of the most important lifestyle factors associated with health status. Currently, one of the main limitations of nutritional epidemiology and nutritional genomics is the difficulty in the measurements of dietary intake. In observational studies carried out in a large number of participants, the most commonly applied tools for estimating dietary intake are based on self-reporting, including food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) for the assessment of regular consumption (usually 1-year), or 24-h recalls for 1-day assessment. However, such instruments for data collection may contain several recall bias and other systematic or random errors that may have a great effect in the subsequent associations found. Although in recent years, it has been an improvement in increasing the validity and precision of food questionnaires due to the use of the new information technologies (Figure 1), these instruments are still biased and additional information based on objective biomarkers of food intake is needed
