Nucleation of Superconductivity in a Mesoscopic Loop of Finite Width
The normal/superconducting phase boundary Tc has been calculated for
mesoscopic loops, as a function of an applied perpendicular magnetic field H.
While for thin-wire loops and filled disks the Tc(H) curves are well known, the
intermediate case, namely mesoscopic loops of finite wire width, have been
studied much less. The linearized first Ginzburg-Landau equation is solved with
the proper normal/vacuum boundary conditions both at the internal and at the
external loop radius. For thin-wire loops the Tc(H) oscillations are perfectly
periodic, and the Tc(H) background is parabolic (this is the usual Little-Parks
effect). For loops of thicker wire width, there is a crossover magnetic field
above which Tc(H) becomes quasi-linear, with the period identical to the Tc(H)
of a filled disk (i.e. pseudoperiodic oscillations). This dimensional
transition is similar to the 2D-3D transition for thin films in a parallel
field, where vortices start penetrating the material as soon as the film
thickness exceeds the temperature dependent coherence length by a factor 1.8.
For the presently studied loops, the crossover point is controlled by a similar
condition. In the high field '3D' regime, a giant vortex state establishes,
where only a surface superconducting sheath near the sample's outer radius is
present.Comment: 7 pages text, 2 EPS figures, uses LaTeX's elsart.sty, proceedings of

The Existence of an Old Quasar at and its Implications for Deflationary Cosmologies
We investigate some observational constraints on decaying vacuum cosmologies
based on the recently discovered old high redshift quasar APM 08279+5255. This
object is located at and has an estimated age of 2-3 Gyr. The class
of cosmologies is characterized by a positive parameter
smaller than unity which quantifies the ratio between the vacuum and the total
energy density. Assuming the lower limit age (2 Gyr) and that the cold dark
matter contributes with we show that is
constrained to be while for an age of 3 Gyr and
the parameter must be greater than 0.32. Our analysis includes closed,
flat and hyperbolic scenarios, and it strongly suggests that there is no age
crisis for this kind of cosmologies. Lower limits to the redshift
quasar formation are also briefly discussed to the flat case. For we found that the redshift formation is constrained by .Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to IJMP

A new classification system for degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbar spine
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.PURPOSE: There is no consensus for a comprehensive analysis of degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbar spine (DSLS). A new classification system for DSLS based on sagittal alignment was proposed. Its clinical relevance was explored. METHODS: Health-related quality-of-life scales (HRQOLs) and clinical parameters were collected: SF-12, ODI, and low back and leg pain visual analog scales (BP-VAS, LP-VAS). Radiographic analysis included Meyerding grading and sagittal parameters: segmental lordosis (SL), L1-S1 lumbar lordosis (LL), T1-T12 thoracic kyphosis (TK), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), and sagittal vertical axis (SVA). Patients were classified according to three main types-1A: preserved LL and SL; 1B: preserved LL and reduced SL (≤5°); 2A: PI-LL ≥10° without pelvic compensation (PT < 25°); 2B: PI-LL ≥10° with pelvic compensation (PT ≥ 25°); type 3: global sagittal malalignment (SVA ≥40 mm). RESULTS: 166 patients (119 F: 47 M) suffering from DSLS were included. Mean age was 67.1 ± 11 years. DSLS demographics were, respectively: type 1A: 73 patients, type 1B: 3, type 2A: 8, type 2B: 22, and type 3: 60. Meyerding grading was: grade 1 (n = 124); grade 2 (n = 24). Affected levels were: L4-L5 (n = 121), L3-L4 (n = 34), L2-L3 (n = 6), and L5-S1 (n = 5). Mean sagittal parameter values were: PI: 59.3° ± 11.9°; PT: 24.3° ± 7.6°; SVA: 29.1 ± 42.2 mm; SL: 18.2° ± 8.1°. DSLS types were correlated with age, ODI and SF-12 PCS (ρ = 0.34, p < 0.05; ρ = 0.33, p < 0.05; ρ = -0.20, and p = 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSION: This classification was consistent with age and HRQOLs and could be a preoperative assessment tool. Its therapeutic impact has yet to be validated. A Case of Late-Diagnosed Ovotesticular Disorder of Sex Development
We report acase of!ovotesticular disorder of sex development!(DSD) with ambiguous genitalia,
46XX presenting the clinical, laboratory, imaging and operative findings and highlighting the pertinent
features of this case. Results of hormonal, genetic testing and histopathology findings are
reviewed. Diagnosis of true hermaphroditism is well defined and the condition can be recognized
even prenatally. Conservative gonadal surgery is the procedure of choice after the diagnosis of
true hermaphroditism, if the risk of a gonadal malignancy is low. Continued follow-up is necessary
because of the multiple psychological, gynecological and urological problems encountered
postpubertally by these patients
Taxonomic bias in amphibian research : Are researchers responding to conservation need?
Amphibians are very diverse, widely distributed, and the most endangered class of vertebrates. As with other taxa, effective conservation of amphibians needs to be supported by detailed scientific knowledge. However, species rich and broadly distributed taxa are typically characterized by high variability in research effort. Our objective was therefore to understand which factors (ecological and cultural) have led some amphibian species to be more researched than others. We used two proxies of research effort: i) the total number of articles on Web of Science (WoS) that mention the scientific name (or synonyms) of each species, and; ii) the number of conservation science articles on WoS that mention the scientific name (or synonyms) of each species. These measures were used as dependent variables in zero hurdle regression models with the aim of identifying the most important factors driving species-level knowledge production. Well researched species (generally, and for conservation) tend to have a longer history of scientific research, come from countries with high scientific capacity, have large body size, and to be present in man-made habitats. Endangered species tend to be less researched, generally and for conservation, possibly because they are often more difficult to study: many endangered amphibians are restricted to small, fragmented and remote habitats in countries with low scientific capacity. We conclude with a discussion of how taxonomic biases in research effort on amphibians can be addressed given the limited funds available for conservation research.Peer reviewe
Physiological and biochemical responses of Eucalyptus seedlings to hypoxia
International audienceAbstractKey messageHypoxia promoted distinct changes in the levels of hormones, amino acids and organic acids in the roots and shoots of a seedling from 2Eucalyptusclones. These results indicate that modulation of hormone production, as well as specific chemical constituents associated with primary metabolism, contributes to the regulation of growth ofEucalyptusseedlings under hypoxic conditions.ContextAlthough floods in areas under Eucalyptus cultivation in Brazil negatively affect plant growth, chemical markers and/or indicators of hypoxia contributes to the regulation.sAimsThis study aimed to evaluate the hormonal and metabolic alterations induced by hypoxia on seedling growth.MethodsSeedlings of Eucalyptus urograndis clones VCC 975 and 1004 were grown in liquid solution and submitted to bubbling with air or with nitrogen. Levels of indol-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), primary metabolite profile and photosynthetic parameters were evaluated after fourteen days.ResultsHypoxia did not affect shoot dry mass of the seedlings. However, it decreased stomatal conductance and photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate, and increased levels of ABA in the shoot. Hypoxia greatly reduced the dry mass and volume of roots, concomitantly with higher ACC and ethylene production. Moreover, hypoxia promoted distinct changes in IAA levels, and in amino acid and organic acid metabolism in roots and shoots.ConclusionThe biosynthesis of ABA, ethylene and IAA and its quantity in root tissues indicates the regulation of metabolism in response to hypoxia in Eucalyptus clones
