U tome se očituje snaga prosuđivanja kojoj su shematske orijentacije poput univerzalizma i partikularizma potrebne samo da bi se ukazalo na ono što nedostaje, te da bi se to nadopunilo.In this study, the author analyses the relationship between general culture and its particularistic segments within the integral political community and concludes: as long as there are citizens, there will be a conflict between the general and the singular; also, the mediation between these two categories is never final; instead, one should repeatedly define what is appropriate, right and compulsory. This is the strength of the type of reasoning to which the schematic landmarks such as universalism and particularism are necessary only as reminders of what is missing in order to fill in the gaps

    A Study of D0 --> K0(S) K0(S) X Decay Channels

    Using data from the FOCUS experiment (FNAL-E831), we report on the decay of D0D^0 mesons into final states containing more than one KS0K^0_S. We present evidence for two Cabibbo favored decay modes, D0KS0KS0Kπ+D^0\to K^0_SK^0_S K^- \pi^+ and D0KS0KS0K+πD^0\to K^0_SK^0_S K^+ \pi^-, and measure their combined branching fraction relative to D0Kˉ0π+πD^0\to \bar{K} ^0\pi^+\pi^- to be Γ(D0KS0KS0K±π)Γ(D0Kˉ0π+π)\frac{\Gamma(D^0\to K^0_SK^0_SK^{\pm}\pi^{\mp})}{\Gamma(D^0\to \bar{K} ^0\pi^+\pi^-)} = 0.0106 ±\pm 0.0019 ±\pm 0.0010. Further, we report new measurements of Γ(D0KS0KS0KS0)Γ(D0Kˉ0π+π)\frac{\Gamma(D^0\to K^0_SK^0_SK^0_S)}{\Gamma(D^0\to \bar{K} ^0\pi^+\pi^-)} = 0.0179 ±\pm 0.0027 ±\pm 0.0026, Γ(D0K0Kˉ0)Γ(D0Kˉ0π+π)\frac{\Gamma(D^0\to K^0\bar{K} ^0)}{\Gamma(D^0\to \bar{K} ^0\pi^+\pi^-)} = 0.0144 ±\pm 0.0032 ±\pm 0.0016, and Γ(D0KS0KS0π+π)Γ(D0Kˉ0π+π)\frac{\Gamma(D^0\to K^0_SK^0_S\pi^+\pi^-)}{\Gamma(D^0\to \bar{K} ^0\pi^+\pi^-)} = 0.0208 ±\pm 0.0035 ±\pm 0.0021 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, typos correcte

    New insights into microwave pyrolysis of biomass: preparation of carbon-based products from pecan nutshells and their application in wastewater treatment

    Microwave pyrolysis of pecan nutshell (Carya illinoinensis) biomass was used to produce carbon-based solid products with potential application in contaminated water treatment. A range of analytical techniques were applied to characterize the intermediate products of microwave pyrolysis in order to monitor the physio-chemical effects of the interacting energy on the biomass. The performance of the carbon-based products was tested through evaluation of lead ion removal capacity from solution. Further analyses demonstrated that ion-exchange by calcium ions on the material surface was the main mechanism involved in lead removal. Calcium compound development was directly correlated to the interaction of the electromagnetic waves with the biomass. Through monitoring the physio-chemical effects of biomass-microwave interactions during microwave pyrolysis, we have shown for the first time that the intermediate products differ from those of conventional pyrolysis. We hypothesise that selective heating leads to the (hemi)cellulosic and lignin degradation processes occurring simultaneously, whereas they are largely sequential in conventional pyrolysis. This work provides optimization parameters essential for the large scale design of microwave processes for this application as well as an understanding of how the operating parameters impact on functionality of the resulting carbon-based materials

    Search for CP violation in D0 and D+ decays

    A high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab has been used to search for CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D+ to K-K+pi+, D0 to K-K+ and D0 to pi-pi+. We have measured the following CP asymmetry parameters: A_CP(K-K+pi+) = +0.006 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.005, A_CP(K-K+) = -0.001 +/- 0.022 +/- 0.015 and A_CP(pi-pi+) = +0.048 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.025 where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic. These asymmetries are consistent with zero with smaller errors than previous measurements.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Study of the D^0 \to pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+ decay

    Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode D0ππ+ππ+D^0 \to \pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+. We measure the branching ratio Γ(D0π+ππ+π)/Γ(D0Kπ+ππ+)=0.0914±0.0018±0.0022\Gamma(D^0 \to\pi^+\pi^- \pi^+\pi^-)/\Gamma(D^0 \to K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+) = 0.0914 \pm 0.0018 \pm 0.0022. An amplitude analysis has been performed, a first for this channel, in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant component is the decay D0a1(1260)+πD^0 \to a_1(1260)^+ \pi^-, accounting for 60% of the decay rate. The second most dominant contribution comes from the decay D0ρ(770)0ρ(770)0D^0 \to \rho(770)^0\rho(770)^0, with a fraction of 25%. We also study the a1(1260)a_1(1260) line shape and resonant substructure. Using the helicity formalism for the angular distribution of the decay D0ρ(770)0ρ(770)0D^0 \to \rho(770)^0\rho(770)^0, we measure a longitudinal polarization of PL=(71±4±2)P_L = (71 \pm 4\pm 2)%.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures. accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Using verbal autopsy to measure causes of death: the comparative performance of existing methods

    Background: Monitoring progress with disease and injury reduction in many populations will require widespread use of verbal autopsy (VA). Multiple methods have been developed for assigning cause of death from a VA but their application is restricted by uncertainty about their reliability. Methods: We investigated the validity of five automated VA methods for assigning cause of death: InterVA-4, Random Forest (RF), Simplified Symptom Pattern (SSP), Tariff method (Tariff), and King-Lu (KL), in addition to physician review of VA forms (PCVA), based on 12,535 cases from diverse populations for which the true cause of death had been reliably established. For adults, children, neonates and stillbirths, performance was assessed separately for individuals using sensitivity, specificity, Kappa, and chance-corrected concordance (CCC) and for populations using cause specific mortality fraction (CSMF) accuracy, with and without additional diagnostic information from prior contact with health services. A total of 500 train-test splits were used to ensure that results are robust to variation in the underlying cause of death distribution. Results: Three automated diagnostic methods, Tariff, SSP, and RF, but not InterVA-4, performed better than physician review in all age groups, study sites, and for the majority of causes of death studied. For adults, CSMF accuracy ranged from 0.764 to 0.770, compared with 0.680 for PCVA and 0.625 for InterVA; CCC varied from 49.2% to 54.1%, compared with 42.2% for PCVA, and 23.8% for InterVA. For children, CSMF accuracy was 0.783 for Tariff, 0.678 for PCVA, and 0.520 for InterVA; CCC was 52.5% for Tariff, 44.5% for PCVA, and 30.3% for InterVA. For neonates, CSMF accuracy was 0.817 for Tariff, 0.719 for PCVA, and 0.629 for InterVA; CCC varied from 47.3% to 50.3% for the three automated methods, 29.3% for PCVA, and 19.4% for InterVA. The method with the highest sensitivity for a specific cause varied by cause. Conclusions: Physician review of verbal autopsy questionnaires is less accurate than automated methods in determining both individual and population causes of death. Overall, Tariff performs as well or better than other methods and should be widely applied in routine mortality surveillance systems with poor cause of death certification practices. © 2014 Murray et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
