The emission line spectrum of the UV deficient quasar Ton 34: evidence of shock excitation?
Emission lines in quasars are believed to originate from a photoionized
plasma. There are, however, some emission features which appear to be
collisionally excited, such as the FeII multiplet bands. Shortward of Ly_alpha,
there also are a few permitted lines of species from low to intermediate
ionization. Ton 34 (z=1.928) exhibits the steepest far-UV continuum decline
known (Fnu propto nu^{-5.3}) shortward of 1050A. This object also emits
unusually strong low to intermediate excitation permitted lines shortward of
the Lyman limit. Using archive spectra of Ton 34 from HST, IUE and Palomar, we
measure the fluxes of all the lines present in the spectra and compare their
relative intensities with those observed in composite quasar spectra. Our
analysis reveals unusual strengths with respect to Ly_alpha of the following
low to intermediate excitation permitted lines: OII+OIII (835A), NIII+OIII
(686-703A) and NIII+NIV (765A). We compare the observed line spectrum with both
photoionization and shock models. Photoionization cannot reproduce the
strengths of these far-UV lines. Shocks with Vs ~ 100 km/s turn out to be
extremely efficient emitters of these lines and are favored as excitation

The nature of the absorbing torus in compact Radio Galaxies
We present BeppoSAX observations of the two radio galaxies PKS 1934-63 and S5
1946+708. Strong Iron Kalpha lines are detected in both objects indicating that
the two sources are absorbed by column densities higher than 10^24 cm^(-2).
Combining radio continuum, HI absorption and X-ray data we can constrain the
physical state and the dimensions of the absorber. We find that the putative
obscuring torus is molecular and located at a distance higher than 20 pc from
the center in S5 1946+70. In PKS 1934-63 no radio nucleus has been observed. If
this is due to free-free absorption a radius of only a few pc is inferred.
Since the Kalpha lines have been detected only at 90% confidence, we also
discuss the implications if they would be not as strong as found from our data.
From our results it appears that the combination of hard X-ray data and
spatially resolved HI absorption measurements provides a powerful diagnostic

How would farmers in the French Alps adapt their systems to different drought and socio-economic context scenarios?
International audienceThe French Alps are considered as an area that is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Several droughts have already occurred since 2003. In order to assess the ability of farming systems to adapt to future drought events, we developed prospective scenarios combining different climatic and socio-economic contexts. Four scenarios were defined based on (i) prospective studies conducted at national and international levels, and (ii) a participatory approach with various stakeholders to transcribe these scenarios at a local level. Farmers and shepherds in the Vercors and Oisans massifs were surveyed in order to understand how they had reacted to previous droughts, and how they would plan to react to our scenarios. Results show first that the farmers would strive to continue their activity in each scenario, taking advantage of the flexibility of their farming systems, as in previous years. However, in the most pessimistic climatic scenario, they would also decrease the size of their herds. Depending on the socio-economic hypothesis, they would adopt farm structural changes (farm processing activities, direct selling, etc.), or look for part-time non-agricultural jobs. Three types of strategies were identified, depending on the farmers' objectives and adjustments. Finally, public policies to accompany these changes are considered
Diagnostics of the structure of AGN's broad line regions with reverberation mapping data: confirmation of the two-component broad line region model
We re-examine the ten Reverberation Mapping (RM) sources with public data
based on the two-component model of the Broad Line Region (BLR). In fitting
their broad H-beta lines, six of them only need one Gaussian component, one of
them has a double-peak profile, one has an irregular profile, and only two of
them need two components, i.e., a Very Broad Gaussian Component (VBGC) and an
Inter-Mediate Gaussian Component (IMGC). The Gaussian components are assumed to
come from two distinct regions in the two-component model; they are Very Broad
Line Region (VBLR) and Inter-Mediate Line region (IMLR). The two sources with a
two-component profile are Mrk 509 and NGC 4051. The time lags of the two
components of both sources satisfy ,
where and are the lags of the two components while
and represent the mean gas velocities of the two regions,
supporting the two-component model of the BLR of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN).
The fact that most of these ten sources only have the VBGC confirms the
assumption that RM mainly measures the radius of the VBLR; consequently, the
radius obtained from the R-L relationship mainly represent the radius of VBLR.
Moreover, NGC 4051, with a lag of about 5 days in the one component model, is
an outlier on the R-L relationship as shown in Kaspi et al. (2005); however
this problem disappears in our two-component model with lags of about 2 and 6

The X-ray emission of the most luminous 3CR radio sources
We investigate the X-ray properties of the most luminous radio sources in the
3CR catalogue, in order to assess if they are similar to the most luminous
radio quiet quasars, for instance in the X-ray normalization with respect to
the optical luminosity, or in the distribution of the absorption column
density. We have selected the (optically identified) 3CR radio sources whose
178-MHz monochromatic luminosity lies in the highest factor-of-three bin. The 4
most luminous objects had already been observed in X rays. Of the remaining 16,
we observed with XMM-Newton 4 randomly chosen, optical type 1s, and 4 type 2s.
All targets have been detected. The optical-to-Xray spectral index, alphaox,
can be computed only for the type 1s and, in agreement with previous studies,
is found to be flatter than in radio quiet quasars of similar luminosity.
However, the Compton thin type 2s have an absorption corrected X-ray luminosity
systematically lower than the type 1s, by a factor which makes them consistent
with the radio quiet alphaox. Within the limited statistics, the Compton thick
objects seem to have a reflected component more luminous than the Compton thin
ones. The extra X-ray component observed in type 1 radio loud quasars is beamed
for intrinsic causes, and is not collimated by the absorbing torus as is the
case for the (intrinsically isotropic) disk emission. The extra component can
be associated with a relativistic outflow, provided that the flow opening angle
and the Doppler beaming factor are 1/5 - 1/7 radians.Comment: LaTex, 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in A&
Legacy data and cosmological constraints from the angular-size/redshift relation for ultra-compact radio sources
We have re-examined an ancient VLBI survey of ultra-comact radio sources at
2.29 GHz, which gave fringe amplitudes for 917 such objects with total flux
density >0.5 Jy approximately. A number of cosmological investigations based
upon this survey have been published in recent years. We have updated the
sample with respect to both redshift and radio information, and now have full
data for 613 objects, significantly larger than the number (337) used in
earlier investigations. The corresponding angular-size/redshift diagram gives
Omega_m=0.25+0.04/-0.03, Omega_\Lambda=0.97+0.09/-0.13 and K=0.22+0.07/-0.10.
In combination with supernova data, and a simple-minded approach to CMB data
based upon the angular size of the acoustic horizon, our best figures are
Omega_m=0.298+0.025/-0.024, Omega_\Lambda=0.702+0.035/-0.036 and K=
0.000+0.021/-0.019. We have examined simple models of dynamical vacuum energy;
the first, based upon a scalar potential V(phi)=omega_C^2 phi^2/2, gives
w(0)=-1.00+0.06/-0.00, (dw/dz)_0=+0.00/-0.08; in this case conditions at z=0
require particular attention, to preclude behaviour in which phi becomes
singular as z -->infinity. For fixed w limits are w=-1.20+0.15/-0.14. The above
error bars are 68% confidence limits.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure
Enhanced Star Formation in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 AGN revealed by Spitzer
We present new low resolution Spitzer mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample
of 20 ROSAT selected local Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). We detect
strong AGN continuum in all and clear PAH emission in 70% of the sources. The
6.2 micron PAH luminosity spans three orders of magnitudes, from ~10^(39) erg/s
to ~10^(42) erg/s providing strong evidence for intense ongoing star formation
in the circumnuclear regions of these sources. Using the IRS/Spitzer archive we
gather a large number of additional NLS1s and their broad line counterparts
(BLS1s) and constructed NLS1 and BLS1 sub-samples to compare them in various
ways. The comparison shows a clear separation according to FWHM(H_beta) such
that objects with narrower broad H_beta lines are the strongest PAH emitters.
We test this division in various ways trying to remove biases due to luminosity
and aperture size. Specifically, we find that star formation activity around
NLS1 AGN is larger than around BLS1 of the same AGN luminosity. The above
result seems to hold over the entire range of distance and luminosity. Moreover
the star formation rate is higher in low black hole mass and high L/L_Edd
systems indicating that black hole growth and star formation are occurring

Multicolor photometry of ten Seyfert 1 galaxies
We present BVI photometry of ten Seyfert 1 galaxies and narrow band H-alpha
images for six of these objects as well. The results indicate that the
luminosity sample distribution has an amplitude of almost 4 magnitudes with an
average of M_B=-20.7. The observed morphologies are confined to early type
galaxies. A barred structure is found in only 2 objects. Despite that early
morphological types are dominant in this sample, integrated (B-V) colors are
very blue. For instance, the SO galaxies show, on average, a (B-V)=0.78. This
effect seems to be caused by the luminosity contribution of the active nucleus
and/or the disk to the total luminosity of the galaxy. In the B band, the
contribution of the active galactic nucleus to the total luminosity of the
galaxy varies from 3% to almost 60% and the bulge to disk luminosity ratio
(L_bulge/L_disk) ranges from 0.6 to 22. Signs of tidal interactions seems to be
a common characteristic since they are observed in 6 of the objects and one of
them seems to be located in a poor cluster not yet identified in the
literature. H_alpha extended emission is rare, with only 1 galaxy showing clear
evidence of it. Luminosity profile decomposition shows that the model Gauss +
bulge + disk properly reproduces the surface brightness of the galaxies.
However, in order to account for the luminosity profile, most of the disk
galaxies needs the inner truncated exponential form with a central cutoff
radius ranging from 3 to 10 kpc. This is interpreted in terms of reddened
regions that are well identified in the B-V color maps. These regions present
very similar colors among them, with (B-V)~1.2. This fact could be associated
to the presence of dust confined in the inner regions of the galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 25 figures. Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysic
