    Investigation of late-cycle soot oxidation using laser extinction and in-cylinder gas sampling at varying inlet oxygen concentrations in diesel engines

    [EN] This study focuses on the relative importance of O-2 and OH as oxidizers of soot during the late cycle in diesel engines, where the soot oxidation is characterized in an optically accessible engine using laser extinction measurements. These are combined with in-cylinder gas sampling data from a single cylinder engine fitted with a fast gas-sampling valve. Both measurements confirm that the in-cylinder soot oxidation slows down when the inlet concentration of O-2 is reduced. A 38% decrease in intake O-2 concentration reduces the soot oxidation rate by 83%, a non-linearity suggesting that O-2 in itself is not the main soot oxidizing species.     The second small astronomy satellite (SAS-2) carried a high energy gamma ray telescope into an equitorial orbit with a 2 D inclination, an apogee of 610 km, and a perigee of 440 km. The energy threshold of the instrument was about 30 MeV, the energy of the gamma rays could be measured up to about 200 MeV, and the integral intensity above 200 MeV could also be measured. Summary tables of the gamma ray data are presented in two energy bands, 35-100 MeV and 100 MeV. The sky was divided into 144 solid angle elements, and, in each solid angle element for which data exist, the number of gamma rays observed is given and also the exposure factor. Information is provided to permit conversion of these data into approximate intensities

    Molecular Hydrogen and [FeII] in Active Galactic Nuclei

    (Abridge) Near-infrared spectroscopy is used to study the kinematics and excitation mechanisms of the H2 and [FeII] gas in a sample of AGN. The H2 lines are unresolved in all objects in which they were detected while the [FeII] lines have widths implying gas velocities of up to 650 km/s. This suggests that, very likely, the H2 and [FeII] emission does not originate from the same parcel of gas. Molecular H2 were detected in 90% of the sample, including PG objects, indicating detectavel amounts of molecular material even in objects with low levels of circumnuclear starburst activity. The data favors thermal excitation for the H2 lines. Indeed, in NGC3227, Mrk766, NGC4051 and NGC4151, the molecular emission is found to be purely thermal. This result is also confirmed by the rather similar vibrational and rotational temperatures in the objects for which they were derived. [FeII] lines are detected in all of the AGN. The [FeII] 1.254mu/Pa-beta ratio is compatible with excitation of the [FeII] by the active nucleus, but in Mrk 766 it implies a stellar origin. A correlation between H2/Br-gamma and [FeII]/Pa-beta is found. We confirm that it is a useful diagnostic tool in the NIR to separate emitting line objects by their level of nuclear activity. X-ray excitation models are able to explain the observed H2 and part of the [FeII] emission. Most likely, a combination of X-ray heating, shocks driven by the radio jet, and circumnuclear star formation contributes, in different proportions, to the H2 and [FeII] emission. In most of our spectra, the [FeII] 1.257mu/1.644mu ratio is found to be 30% lower than the intrinsic value based on current atomic data. This implies either than the extinction towards the [FeII] emitting clouds is very similar in most objects or there are possible inaccuracies in the A-values in the [FeII] transitions.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Considering the Feasibility, Tolerability and Safety of High-Intensity Interval Training as a Novel Treatment for Patients with Intermittent Claudication.Structured AbstractPurpose: This study assessed the feasibility, tolerability, safety and potential efficacy of a novel, 6-week, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) programme for patients with intermittent claudication (IC).Methods: Patients referred to a usual-care supervised exercise programme were invited to undertake a HIIT programme. All recruited patients performed a baseline cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) to inform their exercise prescription. HIIT involved ten, one-minute high-intensity cycling intervals interspersed with one-minute recovery intervals, performed three times per week for six-weeks. Outcomes included feasibility, tolerability, safety, walking distance and quality of life. Results: 144 patients with IC were referred, 95 met initial eligibility criteria (66%) and 30 (32%) were recruited for HIIT, of which 15 (50%) completed. Of the recruited patients, 90% were on optimal medical therapy and 40% had concomitant cardiac, cerebrovascular and/or respiratory disease. Patients who completed the programme attended 100% of the sessions and one serious adverse event was recorded. Improvements in walking distances and quality of life were observed.Following recruitment of the first 20 patients, the inclusion criteria was refined on the basis of CPX, leading to improved completion rates.Conclusions: This study provides preliminary findings indicating that patients with IC can complete a short-term HIIT programme. We provide very early evidence that HIIT may be safe and well-tolerated. In addition, walking distances seem to improve following HIIT. After a small change in the exclusion criteria, the intervention and inclusion/exclusion criteria now seem appropriate for this population, meaning further research to evaluate HIIT in patients with IC is warranted.
