    Multi-‐dimensional Protein Identification Technology

    Get PDF
Before the rise of the Multidimentional Protein Identification Technology (MudPIT), protein and peptide mixtures were resolved using traditional proteomic technologies like the gel-‐ based 2D chromatography that separates proteins by isoelectric point and molecular weight. This technique was tedious and limited, since the characterization of single proteins required isolation of protein gel spots, their subsequent proteolyzation and analysis using Matrix-‐ assisted laser desorption/ionization-‐time of flight (MALDI-‐TOF) mass spectrometry

Lesson study as a tool for rebuilding teachers' practical thinking: a bridge between espoused theories and theories-in-use

This Lesson Study forms part of the research work carried out by the Spanish team, in order to analyse the potential of this professional teacher development methodology for the reconstruction of teachers' practical thinking. It is a qualitative research process which involves the monitoring of seven infant school teachers during two school cycles. The teachers developed a Lesson Study over this period, with a practical thinking case study being carried out both before and after. This paper focuses on the Lesson Study case study. The Lesson Study was developed independently by the group of teachers, who were advised throughout by the undersigned researchers. At the same time, the researchers carried out a case study focusing on the Lesson Study being developed by the teachers. Findings/Conclusions: - From the start of the Lesson Study, we can find evidence of changes in the practical thinking of the teachers involved, which led to immediate changes in their classroom practice. - The development of the Lesson Study brought about significant reflection with regards to the Infant Education curriculum, in some cases resulting in substantial modification to the way it is implemented in their different classrooms. - The teachers pointed out the value of cooperative work on several different occasions. - They also emphasised the high level of learning they achieved by observing how their colleagues developed the lesson designed by the group using different strategies and data collection instruments, such as documentation inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, when reflecting on their own practice. On the whole, we can state that the cooperative design work of this lesson showed the contrast between the espoused theories of the participants and their theories-in-use, conditioned fundamentally by their work contexts and previous experience. Lesson Study is a way to bring these two poles closer together, enriching teachers with strategies to help detect contradictions in their practice and to resolve them and feel more comfortable with what they do.Universidad de Málaga. Analysis of judgmental adjustments in the presence of promotions

    Get PDF
Sales forecasting is increasingly complex due to many factors, such as product life cycles that have become shorter, more competitive markets and aggressive marketing. Often, forecasts are produced using a Forecasting Support System that integrates univariate statistical forecasts with judgment from experts in the organization. Managers add information to the forecast, like future promotions, potentially improving accuracy. Despite the importance of judgment and promotions, the literature devoted to study their relationship on forecasting performance is scarce. We analyze managerial adjustments accuracy under periods of promotions, based on weekly data from a manufacturing company. Intervention analysis is used to establish whether judgmental adjustments can be replaced by multivariate statistical models when responding to promotional information. We show that judgmental adjustments can enhance baseline forecasts during promotions, but not systematically. Transfer function models based on past promotions information achieved lower overall forecasting errors. Finally, a hybrid model illustrates the fact that human experts still added value to the transfer function models

Hunting for Rare Romances in the Canary Islands

"What is a Rare Romance? Diego Catalán published in 1959 an article with this same title (1959a:445-77), dedicated to the Portuguese ballad tradition, in which he brought out the importance of that tradition for the knowledge of certain romances which because of their rarity were overlooked or lived in fragmented form in the oral life of other Hispanic traditions. Four romances were studied there, four very powerful examples of how an oral text, a single version, can be the key to the correct interpretation of several romances which tradition has not preserved very well. Here we should like to call attention to the Canarian tradition as one of the most extraordinary in its preservation of romances that are extremely rare in modern oral tradition."--Opening paragraph

This article aims to prove empirically that there are signifi cant differencesin the correlation that shows no leadership, transactional leadership andtransformational leadership (MLQ) with the perceived lack of integrity ofthe leader (PLIS). It also sought to test whether there was an increased intensityof the relationships between each of the variables of leadership withintegrity (T-test). The results show that both transformational leadership andtransactional relationship are directly related to integrity. Also based on theempirical results of this investigation is concluded that the relationship oftransformational leadership with integrity is stronger than the relationshipof leadership with transactional integrity. And that transactional leadershipis in turn associated with more integrity that no lead.Transformational leadership, integrity, transactional leadership.

"Todos los monstruos son humanos" : el imaginario cultural y la creación de bestiarios contemporáneos en American Horror Story

    Get PDF
On November 7, 2011, FX aired American Horror Story (2011 to present). Instead each one of the seasons develop some independent plots by breaking the seriality of current television fiction, the show can be considered as a unitary whole so as a aesthetically hybrid cultural product. This paper analyses the concept of Monstrosity in American Horror Story whose underlying idea is extremely related to the contemporary new horror as well as to the postmodern horror. Thus, the show will recur to the cultural and collective imaginary of terror and fantasy in order to build a constellation of characters dealing with the depiction of a contemporary bestiary

This article discusses the cinematic productions of Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna directed by AntonioRomán in 1947 and Juan Guerrero Zamora in 1972. The analysis stresses the different use ofliterary adaptation and aesthetic appropriation techniques, according to the ultimate purpose ofadjusting the contents of Lope de Vega’s play to the historical and political hegemonic discourses oftheir respective productions and cinema exhibitions
