Measuring the U.S. Employment Situation Using Online Panels: The Yale Labor Survey

This study presents the design and results of a rapid-fire survey that collects labor market data for individuals in the United States. The purpose is to test online panels for their application to social, economic, and demographic information as well as to apply this approach to the U.S. labor market. The Yale Labor Survey (YLS) used an online panel from YouGov to replicate statistics from the Current Population Survey (CPS), the government’s official source of household labor market statistics. The YLS’s advantages included its timeliness, low cost, and ability to develop new questions quickly to study unusual labor market patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results from the YLS track employment data closely from the CPS during the pandemic. Although YLS estimates of unemployment and participation rates mirrored the broad trends in CPS data, YLS estimates of those two rates were less accurate than for employment. Doulien kokemukset ja toiminta suunnitelluissa kotisynnytyksissä

Naispuolinen tukihenkilö on jo vanha ilmiö synnytyksissä. Doula on koulutettu synnytystukihenkilö, joka toimii jatkuvana tukena synnyttäjälle niin odotusaikana, synnytyksessä kuin sen jälkeen. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on kuvata doulien kokemuksia ja toimintaa suunnitelluissa kotisynnytyksissä. Tavoitteena on tuottaa ajantasaista tietoa doulien kokemuksista ja toiminnasta suunnitelluissa kotisynnytyksissä heidän näkökulmastaan. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla doulia verkkokyselyllä avoimin kysymyksin. Kerätty aineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöisellä sisällönanalyysilla. Kyselyyn osallistui kuusi kotisynnytyksessä mukana ollutta doulaa. Verkkokyselyyn osallistuneiden doulien kotisynnytyskokemukset ovat suurimmaksi osaksi myönteisiä. Vastauksista käy ilmi, että kotisynnytyskokemukset ovat hyviä, kauniita, upeita, voimakkaita, rauhallisia ja turvallisia sekä niistä huokuu perheen tyytyväisyys. Doulat tuovat myös esille huolta aiheuttavia asioita kuten odottamattomat tilanteet kotisynnytyksen aikana sekä epäluottamuksen herääminen äidin ja vauvan saamasta hoidosta. Doulat kuitenkin kokevat, että perheet ovat hyvin valmistautuneet kotisynnytyksiin ja näkevät myönteisenä sen, että äidillä ja perheillä on mahdollisuus valita haluamansa synnytyspaikka. Toimintaa doulat kuvaavat vastauksissaan kokonaisvaltaisesti. Suunnitelluissa kotisynnytyksissä doula toimii perheen tarpeiden ja toiveiden mukaan. Perheen kanssa suunnitellaan kotisynnytystilannetta ja käydään läpi kotisynnytyksen vaiheita. Doula keskustelee äidin kanssa myös mahdollista edellisistä synnytyksistä, peloista ja toiveista. Doula suunnittelee etukäteen yhdessä synnyttävän äidin kanssa luonnonmukaisia kivunlievityksen keinoja. Kotisynnytyksen aikana doula on äidin henkisenä ja fyysisenä tukena. Vastauksissa tulee esiin se, että kotisynnytyksen aikana doula ohjaa ja tukee puolisoa ja muuta perhettä. Kotona synnyttäessä doula huolehtii myös arjen sujuvuudesta. Synnytyksen jälkeen doula antaa perheelle aikaa ja tilaa, mutta on kuitenkin kotona läsnä. Doula jatkaa perheen kanssa yhteistyötä synnytyksen jälkeenkin tapaamalla perheelle sopivana ajankohtana. Lopulta asiakassuhde päätetään yhdessä. Tulokset ovat suuntaa-antavia, koska osallistujia tavoitettiin toivottua vähemmän, mutta kuitenkin tarpeeksi tutkimuksen mahdollistamiseksi Aiempia kotimaisia tutkimuksia doulien kokemuksista, toiminnasta kotisynnytyksissä tai doulien antamasta kotisynnytystuesta Suomessa löytyi hyvin vähän. Näin ollen aiheen lisätutkimukselle on tarvetta.Woman as a support person in birth is an old phenomenon. Doula is an educated support person in birth. Doula gives continuous support to mother during pregnancy, in labour and after birth. The purpose of this study was to find out doulas’ experiences of home births and how they act in home birth. The aim was to produce current information on doulas’ experiences and action in home birth at their point of view. This study was conducted with the methods of qualitative re-searches. Data for this study was collected by sending a questionnaire on the internet for doulas who have experiences of home births. The data was analyzed by using content analysis. The results showed that doulas’ experiences of home births are mostly positive. Doulas describe that home births are beautiful, powerful, peaceful and safe. In addition to positive experiences doulas also express those negative thoughts like unexpected situations and mistrust for the care what was given to a mother and a baby. Despite of that doulas see that families are well-prepared for birth at home and it’s positive that families have the opportunity to decide the place where they give birth. Doulas’ action in home births depends on families’ hopes and needs. Doula and the family plan the home birth together. Doula will discuss with mother what kind of needs, hopes and fears she has towards home birth. They also think ways to relieve labour pain at home such as warm water, massaging et cetera. Doula supports mother both in mental and physical way. The results showed that doula supports also spouse and other family. At home births doula also takes care of the housework. After birth doula stays with the family but gives them time and space. Doula keeps in contact with the family after birth and they keep a meeting afterwards when they end this customer relationship. The results are directional because due to small number of answers. There are very few studies made in Finland about doulas’ experiences, their action in home birth or doulas’ giving support during the home birth. For that point of view there is a need for more studies

Ulkomailla työskentelyn vaikutus osteopaatin ammatilliseen kehittymiseen

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli koota kirjalliseen muotoon osteopaattien kokemusperäistä tietoa ulkomailla työskentelyn hyödyistä ammatillisen kehityksen kannalta. Tavoitteena oli luoda tästä selkeä yhteenveto. Aiheesta ei ole tehty aiempaa tutkimusta. Työ on suunnattu osteopaateille ja osteopaattiopiskelijoille. Opinnäytetyössä vastataan tutkimuskysymykseen: Mitä hyötyä ulkomailla työskentelystä on osteopaatin ammatillisen kehityksen kannalta? Opinnäytetyössä hyödynnettiin laadullisen tutkimuksen lähestymistapaa ja aineistonkeruumenetelmänä käytettiin haastattelua. Aineistoa varten haastateltiin kolmea ulkomailla työskennellyttä osteopaattia. Haastattelut toteutettiin puolistrukturoituina yksilöhaastatteluina. Aineiston analyysimenetelmänä käytettiin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysiä. Tuotoksena syntyi yhteenveto ulkomailla työskentelyn hyödyistä ja niihin vaikuttaneista tekijöistä. Tulosten mukaan ammatilliseen kehitykseen vaikuttaneita tekijöitä ovat muun muassa ammatti-identiteetin, hoitotekniikoiden, kliinisen päättelyn ja osteopaattisten lähestymistapojen kehittyminen. Välillisesti ammatilliseen kehitykseen ovat vaikuttaneet moniammatillinen työskentely, kieli- ja vuorovaikutustaitojen kehittyminen sekä työllistyminen. Aiemmin tieto suomalaisten osteopaattien ulkomailla työskentelystä ja sen tuomista hyödyistä on ollut hiljaista tietoa. Opinnäytetyön myötä erilaisista lähtökohdista olevien osteopaattien kokemustieto on nyt kenen tahansa asiasta kiinnostuneen saatavilla. Työ voi motivoida ja rohkaista osteopaatteja työskentelemään ulkomailla ja kehittämään omaa ammattitaitoaan uuden työympäristön kautta. Jatkossa voisi perehtyä siihen, mitä työlupien saanti vaatii eri maissa ja millainen prosessi työn aloittaminen ulkomailla on. Hyötyjen lisäksi olisi tärkeää tarkastella myös mahdollisia ulkomailla työskentelyn haas-teita.The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to accumulate the quiet information of the professional benefits of working abroad via osteopath’s point of view and bring it to written form. We wanted this thesis to help osteopaths to find information about working abroad more easily. This thesis was carried out with co-operation of three osteo-paths who have been working abroad. This thesis was conducted with a qualitative research method and the material was collected by interviewing osteopaths who have been working abroad. Three osteopaths were interviewed in total and the interviews were carried out individually. The aim of the interviews was to collect data and professional experiences from those osteopaths who have first-hand information about working overseas. The material of the interviews was analyzed by using content analysis and the study question was: What benefits does working abroad have for osteopath’s professional development? The data of the interviews were aggregated, and it was summarized. The summary shows the benefits for osteopath’s professional development that individual osteopaths have gained during the working period abroad. The results of this thesis show that there are several benefits for osteopath’s professional competence including the progress of professional identity and the improvements in osteopathic techniques, differential diagnostics and the osteopathic approaches. In addition, the results show that there is also progress in language and interaction skills. Working abroad has been beneficial for osteopath’s marketing in Finland as well. Since this is the first study that collects information on the benefits of working abroad, it will add value to osteopaths who are interested in employment opportunities abroad. The study can motivate and encourage osteopaths to go and get professional development from different countries in the world. Working abroad will increase in the future, and thus the employment possibilities for osteopaths should be explored more specifically in the future
