    Public relations history is on a rising plane of research and publication. Borrowing from Soviet Premier Khrushchev’s 1956 comment that “Historians are dangerous and capable of upsetting everything”, the commentary argues that it needs to be more challenging, more critical, and seeking other voices. There is a strengthening debate over public relations’ historiography which needs to extend to all countries and types of public relations practice and theory

    Sulphur isotope stratigraphy of drill cuttings and stratigraphic correlation of Permian-Triassic evaporites

    The stratigraphy of the European late Permian-Triassic commonly lacks chronostratigraphic constraint due to the scarcity of diagnostic fossils for biostratigraphy. This is particularly true for the United Kingdom, and as a result, stratigraphic correlation within and between sedimentary basins is primarily reliant on lithostratigraphy. Evaporitic sulphate can be used to develop time series of δ34Sevap data that can be utilised for stratigraphic correlation. However, the availability of continuous drillcore is limited, whilst drill cuttings are commonly acquired but are widely overlooked for stable isotope stratigraphy. We derive a δ34Sevap record from drill cuttings from the southern North Sea Basin, and successfully correlate it with an equivalent published δ34Sevap record from a continuous drillcore in the Cleveland Basin, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. We have chosen seven points in the δ34Sevap records for stratigraphic correlation, defining eight packages of isotopically distinct coeval strata. This is significant, as the ubiquity of drill cuttings presents the opportunity to derive δ34Sevap curves with high geospatial resolution. Equivalent gamma ray logs were used for correlation and compared with the δ34Sevap curves. The correlations agree relatively well, however, the δ34Sevap correlation permits the development of more robust chronostratigraphic constraints. Specifically, the δ34Sevap records constrain the age of the Bunter Shale and Bunter Sandstone in the western Southern North Sea to the latest Permian. This has significant implications for understanding the stratigraphy and palaeogeographic evolution of United Kingdom Permian-Triassic sedimentary basins, and may have economic implications, since the Bunter Sandstone is being considered as a potential reservoir for CO2 storage in the United Kingdom sector

    An 80-million-year sulphur isotope record of pyrite burial over the Permian–Triassic

    Despite the extensive use of sulphur isotope ratios (δ34S) for understanding ancient biogeochemical cycles, many studies focus on specific time-points of interest, such as the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME). We have generated an 80 million-year Permian–Triassic δ34Sevap curve from the Staithes S-20 borehole, Yorkshire, England. The Staithes δ34Sevap record replicates the major features of the global curve, while confirming a new excursion at the Olenekian/Anisian boundary at ~ 247 million years ago. We incorporate the resultant δ34Sevap curve into a sulphur isotope box model. Our modelling approach reveals three significant pyrite burial events (i.e. PBEs) in the Triassic. In particular, it predicts a significant biogeochemical response across the EPME, resulting in a substantial increase in pyrite burial, possibly driven by Siberian Traps volcanism. Our model suggests that after ~ 10 million years pyrite burial achieves relative long-term stability until the latest Triassic

    Diphthamide modification of eEF2 requires a J-domain protein and is essential for normal development

    The intracellular target of diphtheria toxin is a modified histidine residue, diphthamide, in the translation elongation factor, eEF2. This enigmatic modification occurs in all eukaryotes, and is produced in yeast by the action of five gene products, DPH1 to DPH5. Sequence homologues of these genes are present in all sequenced eukaryotic genomes and in higher eukaryotes there is functional evidence for DPH1, 2, 3, and 5 acting in diphthamide biosynthesis. We have identified a mouse mutant in the remaining gene, Dph4. Cells derived from homozygous mutant embryos lack the diphthamide modification of EF2 and are resistant to killing by diphtheria toxin. Reporter-tagged DPH4 protein localizes to the cytoskeleton, in contrast to the localization of DPH1, and consistent with evidence that DPH4 is not part of a proposed complex containing DPH1, 2 and 3. Mice homozygous for the mutation are retarded in growth and development and almost always die before birth. Those that survive long enough have preaxial polydactyly, a duplication of digit 1 of the hind foot. This same defect is seen in embryos homozygous for mutation of DPH1, suggesting that lack of diphthamide on eEF2 could result in translational failure of specific proteins, rather than a generalized translation downregulation

    Episodic river flooding events revealed by palynological assemblages in Jurassic deposits of the Brent Group, North Sea

    Spore and pollen (sporomorph) assemblages from Middle Jurassic marine deposits of the Brent Group in the northern North Sea are investigated to assess temporal and spatial variations in vegetation and depositional processes. Four wells were sampled for palynology from the Penguins Cluster and the Don North East fields through the Rannoch Formation shoreface succession. Hyperpycnite deposits occur throughout, but are concentrated within the lower part of the section. These are expressed by sand-prone beds displaying waxing and waning current motifs, normally graded muddy beds and structureless mudstones. Hyperpycnal/hypopycnal deposits resulting from episodic river flooding represent important sedimentary features as they may be preserved below fair weather wave base in more offshore settings and potentially be the only record of the former presence of a nearby river mouth. The hyperpycnites typically contain abundant Botryoccocus spp., Amorphous Organic Matter (AOM) and hinterland sporomorph taxa with relatively few marine components compared to associated marine shoreface facies. Variations in palynofacies assemblages and Botryococcus spp. abundances indicate frequent river mouth avulsion. Ordination of samples using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) indicates that shoreface samples of the sampled wells are relatively distinct, but hyperpycnite samples are highly similar regardless of their sampled well. This suggests that depositional processes and spore/pollen sources (i.e. catchment zones) were similar among hyperpycnite events across different wells. Abundant bisaccate pollen, Botryococcus spp. and AOM within interpreted hyperpycnites suggest sediment mixing along the fluvial drainage path during flooding events. The terrestrial signature of hyperpycnite sporomorph assemblages demonstrates that underflows remained coherent as they descended the shoreface profile with little turbulent mixing with ambient marine waters. Sporomorph assemblages display few large changes through time suggesting vegetation on the adjacent coastal plain was relatively static through the studied interval
