During the last five years, the per capita consumption of pork meat in Colombia has been around 3 kg person/year. To this digit we have to add the production of pork produced by the economy of farmers, whose main purpose is the consumption and distribution in a local level, in faraway regions of the country or with less development. However, it is important to stand out the great potencial of expansion that still has our sector since the average consumption of pork meat worldwide is of 16 kg person/year. This evaluation of financial feasibility reflects the viability to invest in this productive sector as an alternative in the establishment and production of pork. Additionally, is important to highlight that the global economic crisis was evidenced as one of the factors that can be presented in the pork industry. The technical data of the present study showed that of the 252 female of the pig farm, you obtain 7106 pigs to sale every year. To achieve this economic solvency and maintain the farm good performance, you need an initial investment of 3.302.786.700.Themarketingresearchdeterminedthatthemainproductthatispretendedtobringoutinthemarketconsistsinpigswithanapproximateweightof105kgand150daysold.Thecommercialpriceofthefarmforthemarketingofthepigswillbeginin 3.302.786.700. The marketing research determined that the main product that is pretended to bring out in the market consists in pigs with an approximate weight of 105 kg and 150 days old. The commercial price of the farm for the marketing of the pigs will begin in 4500 a kg and it will increase every year based on inflation

Ram pressure profiles in galaxy groups and clusters

    Get PDF
Using a hybrid method that combines non-radiative hydrodynamical simulations with a semianalytic model of galaxy formation, we determine the ram pressure experienced by galaxies in haloes with virial masses 12.5 ≤ log (M200/ h−1 M⊙) < 15.35 as a function of the halocentric distance, for redshifts 0 ≤ z ≤ 3. The ram pressure is calculated with a self-consistent method that uses the simulation gas particles to obtain the properties of the intergalactic medium. The ram pressure profiles obtained can be well described by beta profile models, with parameters that depend on redshift and halo virial mass in a simple fashion. The fitting formulae provided here will prove useful to include ram pressure effects into semi-analytic models based on methods that lack gas physics, such as dark-matter-only simulations or the Press–Schechter formalism.Instituto de Astrofísica de La PlataFacultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

Polyphosphate accumulation and cell-surface properties by autochthonous bacteria from Argentinian Patagonia

    Get PDF
Bacteria persisting in environments contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have developed physiological mechanisms to counteract environmental stress. Inorganic polyphosphate accumulation represents one of these possible mechanisms. Likewise, properties such as cell-surface hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, biofilm formation and bioemulsifying activity could facilitate interaction of microorganisms with hydrophobic organic compounds. In this work, these physiological properties were compared in indigenous bacteria from polluted sediments from Argentinian Patagonia, which were cultivated in two culture media (LBm and JPP) as a way to improve in the next future the PAHs removal. The highest hydrophobicity values were obtained in Rhodococcus strains, while Bacillus sp. B18 showed the highest auto-aggregation percentage and emulsion index. The highest numerical values of biofilm formation were determined in Rhodococcus sp. F27, Pseudomonas sp. P26, and Gordonia sp. H19 either on hydrophilic or on hydrophobic support. The qualitative and quantitative polyP determinations confirmed the presence of this biopolymer in the strains evaluated. The highest intracellular phosphate mean values were obtained in Bacillus sp. B18 in LBm and Rhodococcus erythropolis 20 in JPP. The bacteria evaluated belonging to different genera showed significant differences in their cell-surface characteristics, bioemulsifying activity and polyP accumulation. The low-cost JPP culture medium was selected for future contaminant removal studies.Fil: Correa Deza, Maria Alejandra. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Get PDF

Selected phytochemical bioactive compounds as quorum sensing inhibitors

Bacterial infections remain an important problem for human health. The control of bacterial infections has been traditionally treated by inhibiting microbial growth using different types of antibiotics. However, the ability of different bacteria to resist the inhibitory action of antibiotics has become a global problem. In fact, there is an important need for the development of new antimicrobials that act on novel bacterial targets. Many pathogenic bacteria control their population and regulate gene expression in response to their cell population density using diffusible signalling com¬pounds. This type of communication has been referred to as “quorum sensing” (QS). This phenomenon can be essential for the synchronization of the virulence production factors, which make it an attractive therapeutic target. Therefore, the search of non-toxic compounds, which inhibit QS and so, the virulence of pathogenic bacteria can bring new alternatives for the treatment of bacterial infections in humans. In this work, we made an attempt to screen the anti-QS activity of 11 bioactive compounds extracted from fruits and vegetables using the biosensor strain, Chromobacterium violaceum. The anti-QS activity was determined quantifying the violacein production of the biosensor strain at three concentrations (50, 100 and 200 µg/ml). At least five of the tested compounds (cinnamaldehyde, pomegranate extracts, ellagic acid resveratrol and rutin) showed anti-QS activity against the biosensor strain. The obtained results showed the potential of bioactive compounds extracted from fruits and vegetables to be used as a new category of anti-pathogenic compounds against bacterial infections.Fil: Truchado , P.. Dibenzothiophene removal by environmental bacteria with differential accumulation of intracellular inorganic polyphosphate

    Get PDF
Dibenzothiophene (DBT), which belongs to the group of polycyclic aromatic heterocycles of sulfur, is a model substance to study the removal of sulfur compounds from oil due to its recalcitrance to traditional and specific removal processes. The aim of this work was to evaluate DBT bioremoval by environmental bacteria and its relationship with polyphosphate (polyP) accumulation, cell surface characteristics and bioemulsifying activity. Pseudomonas sp. P26 achieved the highest DBT removal percentage (48%) after 7 days of incubation. Moreover, positive correlations were estimated between DBT removal and bioemulsifying activity and biofilm formation. A strain-dependent relationship between the content of intracellular polyP and the presence of DBT in the culture medium was also demonstrated. The study of these bacterial characteristics, which could promote DBT transformation, is a first approach to select DBT-removing bacteria, in order to develop bioformulations that are able to contribute to desulfurization processes of petroleum-derived pollutants in the future.Fil: Lobo, Constanza Belén. Nucleosomes and neutrophil extracellular traps in septic and burn patients

    Get PDF
NETosis is a host defense mechanism associated with inflammation and tissue damage. Experimental models show that platelets and von Willebrand factor (VWF) are key elements for intravascular NETosis. We determined NETosis in septic and burn patients at 1 and 4days post-admission (dpa). Nucleosomes were elevated in patients. In septics, they correlated with Human Neutrophil Elastase (HNE)-DNA complexes and SOFA score at 1dpa, and were associated with mortality. Patient´s neutrophils had spontaneous NETosis and were unresponsive to stimulation. Although platelet P-selectin and TNF-α were increased in both groups, higher platelet TLR4 expression, VWF levels and IL-6 were found in septics at 1dpa. Neither platelet activation markers nor cytokines correlated with nucleosomes or HNE-DNA. Nucleosomes could be indicators of organ damage and predictors of mortality in septic but not in burn patients. Platelet activation, VWF and cytokines do not appear to be key mediators of NETosis in these patient groups.Fil: Kaufman, Tomás. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
