Quasicontinuum -decay of Zr: benchmarking indirect () cross section measurements for the -process
Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and -ray strength functions
(SFs) have been extracted from particle- coincidences of the
Zr()Zr and Zr()Zr
reactions using the Oslo method. The new Zr SF data, combined
with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from ~MeV up to the giant dipole resonance at ~MeV. The wide-range SF data display structures at ~MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip
resonance and a pygmy resonance. Furthermore, the SF shows a
minimum at ~MeV and an increase at lower -ray
energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and SFs are shown to
reproduce known () and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for
Zr using the {\sf TALYS} reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark
for this indirect method of estimating () cross sections for Zr
isotopes.Comment: 10 pages and 9 figure
Results of NOPHO ALL2008 treatment for patients aged 1-45 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) do worse than children. From 7/2008 to 12/2014, Nordic and Baltic centers treated 1509 consecutive patients aged 1-45 years with Philadelphia chromosome-negative ALL according to the NOPHO ALL2008 without cranial irradiation. Overall, 1022 patients were of age 1-9 years (A), 266 were 10-17 years (B) and 221 were 18-45 years (C). Sixteen patients (three adults) died during induction. All others achieved remission after induction or 1-3 intensive blocks. Subsequently, 45 patients (12 adults) died, 122 patients relapsed (32 adults) with a median time to relapse of 1.6 years and 13 (no adult) developed a second malignancy. Median follow-up time was 4.6 years. Among the three age groups, older patients more often had higher risk ALL due to T-ALL (32%/25%/9%, PPeer reviewe
Level densities and -ray strength functions in Sn isotopes
The nuclear level densities of Sn and the -ray strength
functions of Sn below the neutron separation energy are
extracted with the Oslo method using the (He, \,) and
(He,He) reactions. The level density function of
Sn displays step-like structures. The microcanonical entropies are
deduced from the level densities, and the single neutron entropy of Sn
is determined to be . Results from a combinatorial model
support the interpretation that some of the low-energy steps in the level
density function are caused by neutron pair-breaking. An enhancement in all the
-ray strength functions of Sn, compared to standard models
for radiative strength, is observed for the -ray energy region of
MeV. These small resonances all have a centroid energy of
8.0(1) MeV and an integrated strength corresponding to of the
classical Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule. The Sn resonances may be due to electric
dipole neutron skin oscillations or to an enhancement of the giant magnetic
dipole resonance
Impaired Fasting Glucose Is Associated With Renal Hyperfiltration in the General Population
Increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), also called hyperfiltration, is a proposed mechanism for renal injury in diabetes. The causes of hyperfiltration in individuals without diabetes are largely unknown, including the possible role of borderline hyperglycemia. We assessed whether impaired fasting glucose (IFG; 5.6–6.9 mmol/L), elevated HbA1c, or hyperinsulinemia are associated with hyperfiltration in the general middle-aged population.
A total of 1,560 individuals, aged 50–62 years without diabetes, were included in the Renal Iohexol Clearance Survey in Tromsø 6 (RENIS-T6). GFR was measured as single-sample plasma iohexol clearance. Hyperfiltration was defined as GFR >90th percentile, adjusted for sex, age, weight, height, and use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors.
Participants with IFG had a multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 1.56 (95% CI 1.07–2.25) for hyperfiltration compared with individuals with normal fasting glucose. Odds ratios (95% CI) of hyperfiltration calculated for a 1-unit increase in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c, after multivariable-adjustment, were 1.97 (1.36–2.85) and 2.23 (1.30–3.86). There was no association between fasting insulin levels and hyperfiltration. A nonlinear association between FPG and GFR was observed (df = 3, P < 0.0001). GFR increased with higher glucose levels, with a steeper slope beginning at FPG ≥5.4 mmol/L.
Borderline hyperglycemia was associated with hyperfiltration, whereas hyperinsulinemia was not. Longitudinal studies are needed to investigate whether the hyperfiltration associated with IFG is a risk factor for renal injury in the general population
Galaxy Counterparts of metal-rich Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers - I: The case of the z=2.35 DLA towards Q2222-0946
We have initiated a survey using the newly commissioned X-shooter
spectrograph to target candidate relatively metal-rich damped Lyman-alpha
absorbers (DLAs). The spectral coverage of X-shooter allows us to search for
not only Lyman-alpha emission, but also rest-frame optical emission lines. We
have chosen DLAs where the strongest rest-frame optical lines ([OII], [OIII],
Hbeta and Halpha) fall in the NIR atmospheric transmission bands. In this first
paper resulting from the survey, we report on the discovery of the galaxy
counterpart of the z_abs = 2.354 DLA towards the z=2.926 quasar Q2222$-0946.
This DLA is amongst the most metal-rich z>2 DLAs studied so far at comparable
redshifts and there is evidence for substantial depletion of refractory
elements onto dust grains. We measure metallicities from ZnII, SiII, NiII, MnII
and FeII of -0.46+/-0.07, -0.51+/-0.06, -0.85+/-0.06, -1.23+/-0.06, and
-0.99+/-0.06, respectively. The galaxy is detected in the Lyman-alpha, [OIII]
lambda4959,5007 Halpha emission lines at an impact parameter of about 0.8
arcsec (6 kpc at z_abs = 2.354). We infer a star-formation rate of 10 M_sun
yr^-1, which is a lower limit due to the possibility of slit-loss. Compared to
the recently determined Halpha luminosity function for z=2.2 galaxies the
DLA-galaxy counterpart has a luminosity of L~0.1L^*_Halpha. The emission-line
ratios are 4.0 (Lyalpha/Halpha) and 1.2 ([OIII]/Halpha). The Lyalpha line shows
clear evidence for resonant scattering effects, namely an asymmetric,
redshifted (relative to the systemic redshift) component and a much weaker
blueshifted component. The fact that the blueshifted component is relatively
weak indicates the presence of a galactic wind. The properties of the galaxy
counterpart of this DLA is consistent with the prediction that metal-rich DLAs
are associated with the most luminous of the DLA-galaxy counterparts.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
The microfoundations of territorial disputes: Evidence from a survey experiment in Japan
Although territorial disputes are one of the most fraught issues among states, how public opinion on territorial disputes varies within states and what explains the variation are often overlooked. This paper argues that citizens who prioritize economic considerations are more likely to support compromises over such disputes, while those who prioritize a country’s reputation tend to reject any compromise. Further, the paper hypothesizes that such variation in individual preferences can be explained by proximity to disputed territories. Counterintuitively, residents closer to disputes are more likely to support a compromise than those who live further away, because they are more affected by economic considerations. Those far from the disputed territory can afford to focus on its political aspects, which leads to a more hawkish stance. By using an experimental approach within Japan, this paper examines the validity of the spatial argument, and tests the relative salience of economic and political aspects of territorial disputes. The findings, based on original survey data, show that distance from disputed territories shapes individual preferences, and under some conditions, people living further away from disputed territories are more hawkish
Bendable, low-loss Topas fibers for the terahertz frequency range
We report on a new class of polymer photonic crystal fibers for low-loss guidance of THz radiation. The use of the cyclic olefin copolymer Topas, in combination with advanced fabrication technology, results in bendable THz fibers with unprecedented low loss and low material dispersion in the THz regime. We demonstrate experimentally how the dispersion may be engineered by fabricating both high- and low-dispersion fibers with zero-dispersion frequency in the regime 0.5-0.6 THz. Near-field, frequencyresolved characterization with high spatial resolution of the amplitude and phase of the modal structure proves that the fiber is single-moded over a wide frequency range, and we see the onset of higher-order modes at high frequencies as well as indication of microporous guiding at low frequencies and high porosity of the fiber. Transmission spectroscopy demonstrates low-loss propagation (< 0.1 dB/cm loss at 0.6 THz) over a wide frequency range.Imaging Science and TechnologyApplied Science
