Changing Patterns of Sexual Risk Behavior Among London Gay Men: 1998-2008
Objectives: To examine changes in the sexual behavior of London gay men between 1998 and 2008.
Methods: Gay men using London gyms were surveyed annually between 1998 and 2005, and again in 2008 (n = 6064; range, 482–834 per year). Information was collected on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status of the respondent, unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) in the previous 3 months, type (main or casual) and HIV status of partner for UAI. Nonconcordant UAI (ncUAI) was defined as UAI with a partner of unknown or discordant HIV status. Concordant UAI (cUAI) was defined as UAI with a partner of the same HIV status (“serosorting”).
Results: Between 1998 and 2008, the percentage of men reporting UAI increased from 24.3% to 36.6% (P = 0.07). This overall increase concealed important differences between nonconcordant and concordant UAI. While the percentage of men engaging in cUAI increased steadily between 1998 and 2008 (9.8%, 20.8%; P = 0.01), the percentage reporting ncUAI increased between 1998 and 2001 (14.5%, 23.7%; P < 0.001), decreased between 2001 and 2005 (23.7%, 15.6%; P < 0.001), and then leveled off between 2005 and 2008 (15.6%, 15.7%; P = 0.2). However, the percentage of men reporting ncUAI with a main partner increased between 2005 and 2008 for HIV-positive men (2.5%, 8.1%; P < 0.05) and HIV negative men (2.1%, 5.5%; P = 0.06). While the percentage of HIV negative men who reported cUAI with a main partner (i.e., serosorting) increased between 1998 and 2008 (12.4%, 21.1%; P < 0.05), less than half established seroconcordance by testing together.
Conclusions: The patterns of sexual behavior among London's gay men between 1998 and 2008 were dynamic and complex. Our data suggest that HIV risk with a main partner and HIV testing among couples should be given greater priority by health promotion programmes

Profiling The Physiological Parameters of Boxers in The Parachute Regiment. ‘Every Man an Emperor’
This study aimed to collect and identify the physiological parameters that are required to produce winning performances in an army boxing competition. Army boxing competitions are sanctioned and governed by ‘England Boxing’ and consist of three rounds of two minutes with one-minute restorative periods. The Parachute Regiment are an elite infantry fighting force within the British military, with a continued success in the inter-army boxing championships. 22 male participants were recruited (mean ± SD age 28 ± 2 years, stature 178 ± 8.1cm, body mass 79 ± 7.1 kg, BMI 24.9 ±2.5).Body fat %. V̇O₂max, lower limb power, and 1RM max strength test protocols for back squat and bench press were performed. Additionally, impact punch power measured from rear hand cross strikes, and punching velocities were measured using a linear positional transducer. Countermovement (CMJ) and repetitive (n=10) jump data were collected using a jump mat. The physiological parameters in mean scores; body composition showed body fat 11.8±8.1%: CMJ height 35.5±5cm: Repetitive jump 28.5±5.6cm: Wingate peak power (body mass to power ratio) 11.5±1.6W/kg: Wingate average power, 8.1±1.4W/kg: V̇O₂max 53±4.8 ml.kg⁻¹.min⁻¹: Back squat (body mass to weight lifted ratio) 1.95±0.2kg: Bench press 1.1±0.1kg/BW: Rear cross strike velocity 8.47±0.8m/s: Impact power 15227±2250W. Significant relationships were observed between anthropometric data and power, strike velocity and V̇O₂max in addition to relationships being evident between some strength and power variables. by the participants in this study. Although punch impact power is an essential performance indicator in boxing, other physiological factors, such as lower limb power and strength have been demonstrated to attribute to the continued winning performances by 3PARA boxing team
Understanding the effect resonant magnetic perturbations have on ELMs
All current estimations of the energy released by type I ELMs indicate that,
in order to ensure an adequate lifetime of the divertor targets on ITER, a
mechanism is required to decrease the amount of energy released by an ELM, or
to eliminate ELMs altogether. One such amelioration mechanism relies on
perturbing the magnetic field in the edge plasma region, either leading to more
frequent, smaller ELMs (ELM mitigation) or ELM suppression. This technique of
Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) has been employed to suppress type I
ELMs at high collisionality/density on DIII-D, ASDEX Upgrade, KSTAR and JET and
at low collisionality on DIII-D. At ITER-like collisionality the RMPs enhance
the transport of particles or energy and keep the edge pressure gradient below
the 2D linear ideal MHD critical value that would trigger an ELM, whereas at
high collisionality/density the type I ELMs are replaced by small type II ELMs.
Although ELM suppression only occurs within limitied operational ranges, ELM
mitigation is much more easily achieved. The exact parameters that determine
the onset of ELM suppression are unknown but in all cases the magnetic
perturbations produce 3D distortions to the plasma and enhanced particle
transport. The incorporation of these 3D effects in codes will be essential in
order to make quantitative predictions for future devices.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figure
