    A Comparative Analysis Of Student Job Placement In Management Information Systems: An Exploratory Study

    Due to the recent economic recession and the significant reduction in Information Technology (IT) expenditures of corporate America, job opportunities have become very scarce for college graduates, especially in the field of Management Information Systems (MIS).  Both MIS students and faculty have to start finding ways to improve the full time job opportunities for students by helping students do better in their studies and GPAs, adding internship experience, obtaining more majors, taking extra technical courses, etc. in addition to their regular course work.  However, little research has been conducted to investigate the relationships between these factors and a full time job opportunity in this field.  The current study intends to explore those important issues by conducting a survey among more than 200 MIS seniors in three big universities in USA. The implication of the survey findings is discussed in the final section of the paper

    Critical Factors Affecting Job Offers for New MIS Graduates

    Due to the sharp IT budget cuts in corporate America, the slowing economy, and the offshore outsourcing trend, job opportunities for MIS graduates have become scarcer in recent years. In addition to having good academic performance, MIS students have adopted aggressive approaches, such as MIS internships, double majors, and more technical course work, to securing employment. However, research on the critical factors affecting MIS full-time job offers has not received enough attention, and little empirical research is currently available. This study intends to explore this important issue using a survey research methodology. 742 seniors majoring in MIS were surveyed in three different US universities and 213 seniors actually participated in the survey. The critical factors identified in this study include internship experience, the nature of internship experience, double majors, the time when students declare their MIS majors, grade point average, and gender difference. The research findings in this study indicate that student GPA, networking-oriented internship, and double majors are identified as the key items influencing MIS full time job offers

    Unconventional superconductivity in the nickel-chalcogenide superconductor, TlNi2_2Se2_2

    We present the results of a study of the vortex lattice (VL) of the nickel chalcogenide superconductor TlNi2Se2, using small angle neutron scattering. This superconductor has the same crystal symmetry as the iron arsenide materials. Previous work points to it being a two-gap superconductor, with an unknown pairing mechanism. No structural transitions in the vortex lattice are seen in the phase diagram, arguing against d-wave gap symmetry. Empirical fits of the temperature-dependence of the form factor and penetration depth rule out a simple s-wave model, supporting the presence of nodes in the gap function. The variation of the VL opening angle with field is consistent with earlier reports of of multiple gaps

    Exogenous Application of Jasmonic Acid Induces Volatile Emissions in Rice and Enhances Parasitism of Nilaparvata lugens Eggs by theParasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae

    Jasmonate signaling pathway plays an important role in induced plant defense against herbivores and pathogens, including the emission of volatiles that serve as attractants for natural enemies of herbivores. We studied the volatiles emitted from rice plants that were wounded and treated with jasmonic acid (JA) and their effects on the host-searching behavior of the rice brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (StÄl), and its mymarid egg parasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae Pang et Wang. Female adults of N. lugens significantly preferred to settle on JA-treated rice plants immediately after release. The parasitoid A. nilaparvatae showed a similar preference and was more attracted to the volatiles emitted from JA-treated rice plants than to volatiles from control plants. This was also evident from greenhouse and field experiments in which parasitism of N. lugens eggs by A. nilaparvatae on plants that were surrounded by JA-treated plants was more than twofold higher than on control plants. Analyses of volatiles collected from rice plants showed that JA treatment dramatically increased the release of volatiles, which included aliphatic aldehydes and alcohols, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, methyl salicylate, n-heptadecane, and several as yet unidentified compounds. These results confirm an involvement of the JA pathway in induced defense in rice plants and demonstrate that the egg parasitoid A. nilaparvatae exploits plant-provided cues to locate hosts.     Curbing the Hepatitis B Epidemic in Asian American Communities: Engaging Local Hospitals

    Background. In the United States, more than 50% of the 1.2 million living with hepatitis B infection are Asian Americans (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). In the city of San Francisco, Asian Americans make up 33% of the population and the city itself has the highest rate of liver cancer in the nation (United States Census Bureau, 2010, California Cancer Registry, 2011). In 2007, to address the risk of hepatitis B and liver cancer, the San Francisco Hep B Free Campaign (SFHBF) drew together a comprehensive coalition of key leaders and organizations from media, health care, government, community and business sectors within and beyond the Asian American community. Methods. Based on 13 key informant interviews with stakeholders, this paper explores how SFHBF incorporated local city hospitals as coalition partners to increase knowledge and screening of hepatitis B among Asian Americans throughout San Francisco. Results. Key findings include the various steps needed to involve hospitals including 1) Identify mission and key stakeholders, 2) Create collaborations among hospitals; 3) Identify benefits to hospitals. Implications. This research makes a unique contribution to the literature on engaging hospitals in community health partnerships. The findings have implications for other public health initiatives that are seeking to engage and involve hospitals as partners and collaborators

    IR and UV Galaxies at z=0.6 -- Evolution of Dust Attenuation and Stellar Mass as Revealed by SWIRE and GALEX

    We study dust attenuation and stellar mass of z∌0.6\rm z\sim 0.6 star-forming galaxies using new SWIRE observations in IR and GALEX observations in UV. Two samples are selected from the SWIRE and GALEX source catalogs in the SWIRE/GALEX field ELAIS-N1-00 (Ω=0.8\Omega = 0.8 deg2^2). The UV selected sample has 600 galaxies with photometric redshift (hereafter photo-z) 0.5≀z≀0.70.5 \leq z \leq 0.7 and NUV≀23.5\leq 23.5 (corresponding to \rm L_{FUV} \geq 10^{9.6} L_\sun). The IR selected sample contains 430 galaxies with f24ÎŒm≄0.2f_{24\mu m} \geq 0.2 mJy (\rm L_{dust} \geq 10^{10.8} L_\sun) in the same photo-z range. It is found that the mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios of the z=0.6 UV galaxies are consistent with that of their z=0 counterparts of the same LFUV\rm L_{FUV}. For IR galaxies, the mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios of the z=0.6 LIRGs (\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{11} L_\sun) are about a factor of 2 lower than local LIRGs, whereas z=0.6 ULIRGs (\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{12} L_\sun) have the same mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios as their local counterparts. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the dominant component of LIRG population has changed from large, gas rich spirals at z>0.5>0.5 to major-mergers at z=0. The stellar mass of z=0.6 UV galaxies of \rm L_{FUV} \leq 10^{10.2} L_\sun is about a factor 2 less than their local counterparts of the same luminosity, indicating growth of these galaxies. The mass of z=0.6 UV lunmous galaxies (UVLGs: \rm L_{FUV} > 10^{10.2} L_\sun) and IR selected galaxies, which are nearly exclusively LIRGs and ULIRGs, is the same as their local counterparts.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement series dedicated to GALEX result

    The critical role of the routing scheme in simulating peak river discharge in global hydrological models

    Global hydrological models (GHMs) have been applied to assess global flood hazards, but their capacity to capture the timing and amplitude of peak river discharge—which is crucial in flood simulations—has traditionally not been the focus of examination. Here we evaluate to what degree the choice of river routing scheme affects simulations of peak discharge and may help to provide better agreement with observations. To this end we use runoff and discharge simulations of nine GHMs forced by observational climate data (1971–2010) within the ISIMIP2a project. The runoff simulations were used as input for the global river routing model CaMa-Flood. The simulated daily discharge was compared to the discharge generated by each GHM using its native river routing scheme. For each GHM both versions of simulated discharge were compared to monthly and daily discharge observations from 1701 GRDC stations as a benchmark. CaMa-Flood routing shows a general reduction of peak river discharge and a delay of about two to three weeks in its occurrence, likely induced by the buffering capacity of floodplain reservoirs. For a majority of river basins, discharge produced by CaMa-Flood resulted in a better agreement with observations. In particular, maximum daily discharge was adjusted, with a multi-model averaged reduction in bias over about 2/3 of the analysed basin area. The increase in agreement was obtained in both managed and near-natural basins. Overall, this study demonstrates the importance of routing scheme choice in peak discharge simulation, where CaMa-Flood routing accounts for floodplain storage and backwater effects that are not represented in most GHMs. Our study provides important hints that an explicit parameterisation of these processes may be essential in future impact studies

    Prandiology of Drosophila and the CAFE assay

    Studies of feeding behavior in genetically tractable invertebrate model systems have been limited by the lack of proper methodology. We introduce the Capillary Feeder (CAFE), a method allowing precise, real-time measurement of ingestion by individual or grouped fruit flies on the scale of minutes to days. Using this technique, we conducted the first quantitative analysis of prandial behavior in Drosophila melanogaster. Our results allow the dissection of feeding into discrete bouts of ingestion, defining two separate parameters, meal volume and frequency, that can be uncoupled and thus are likely to be independently regulated. In addition, our long-term measurements show that flies can ingest as much as 1.7x their body mass over 24 h. Besides the study of appetite, the CAFE can be used to monitor oral drug delivery. As an illustration, we used the CAFE to test the effects of dietary supplementation with two compounds, paraquat and ethanol, on food ingestion and preference. Paraquat, a prooxidant widely used in stress tests, had a strong anorexigenic effect. In contrast, in a feeding preference assay, ethanol-laced food, but not ethanol by itself, acted as an attractant

    Assessment of network module identification across complex diseases

    Many bioinformatics methods have been proposed for reducing the complexity of large gene or protein networks into relevant subnetworks or modules. Yet, how such methods compare to each other in terms of their ability to identify disease-relevant modules in different types of network remains poorly understood. We launched the 'Disease Module Identification DREAM Challenge', an open competition to comprehensively assess module identification methods across diverse protein-protein interaction, signaling, gene co-expression, homology and cancer-gene networks. Predicted network modules were tested for association with complex traits and diseases using a unique collection of 180 genome-wide association studies. Our robust assessment of 75 module identification methods reveals top-performing algorithms, which recover complementary trait-associated modules. We find that most of these modules correspond to core disease-relevant pathways, which often comprise therapeutic targets. This community challenge establishes biologically interpretable benchmarks, tools and guidelines for molecular network analysis to study human disease biology
