Q-switched neodymium-doped phosphate glass fibre lasers
The operation of a short-pulse, Q-switched, neodymium-doped fiber laser operating at 1.054µm is described experimentally and theoretically. The laser is efficiently pumped with a single-stripe AlGaAs laser diode and emits >1kW pulses. It is seen that due to high gain, short pulses with high energy extraction efficiency can be obtained. The feature of broad emission lines associated with rare-earth-doped glasses is exploited to demonstrate tunable, Q-switched operation over a 40 nm tuning range. <br/
Vacuum polarization in the spacetime of charged nonlinear black hole
Building on general formulas obtained from the approximate renormalized
effective action, the approximate stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive
scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling in the spacetime of charged
black hole being a solution of coupled equations of nonlinear electrodynamics
and general relativity is constructed and analysed. It is shown that in a few
limiting cases, the analytical expressions relating obtained tensor to the
general renormalized stress-energy tensor evaluated in the geometry of the
Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole could be derived. A detailed numerical
analysis with special emphasis put on the minimal coupling is presented and the
results are compared with those obtained earlier for the conformally coupled
field. Some novel features of the renormalized stress-energy tensor are
discussed
Magnetically Stabilized Luminescent Excitations in Hexagonal Boron Nitride
Magnetically stabilized luminescence is observed in hexagonal boron nitride.
The luminescence is induced by absorption of cold neutrons and is in the
visible region. In the absence of a magnetic field, the photon emission level
is observed to decay over several hundred seconds. A fraction of this
luminescence can be suppressed if the temperature is T <~ 0.6 K and the
magnetic field is B >~ 1.0 T. Subsequent to irradiation and suppression,
luminescence can be induced by an increase in T or lowering of B. Possible
explanations include stabilization of triplet states or the localization and

An analitical approximation of for a scalar field in a static
spherically symmetric wormhole spacetime is obtained. The scalar field is
assumed to be both massive and massless, with an arbitrary coupling to

Reliability and validity of opiate use self-report in a population at high risk for esophageal cancer in Golestan, Iran
Objective: To assess the reliability and validity of self-reported opium use in a rural Iranian population at high risk for esophageal cancer in preparation for a large cohort study. Method: 1,057 subjects ages 33 to 84 years were recruited from Gonbad city and three surrounding villages in Golestan province of Iran and completed a questionnaire and provided biological samples. The history and duration of using opium, smoking tobacco, chewing nass, and drinking alcohol were measured by questionnaire in the entire cohort. A subgroup of 130 people was reinterviewed after 2 months to assess reliability. Validity of the opium question was assessed by comparing the questionnaire responses with the presence of codeine and morphine in the urine of 150 selected subjects. Results: Self-reported opiate use is reliable and valid in this population. The reliability of ever opium use and duration of opium use had κ′s of 0.96 and 0.74, respectively. The validity of self-reported opium use was also high. Using urine codeine or morphine as the gold standard for use of opium, self-report had a sensitivity of 0.93 and a specificity of 0.89. Conclusions: The self-reported use of opium can provide a reliable and valid measurement in this population and will be useful for studying associations between opium use and occurrence of esophageal cancer and other diseases
Non-Equilibrium Electron Transport in Two-Dimensional Nano-Structures Modeled by Green's Functions and the Finite-Element Method
We use the effective-mass approximation and the density-functional theory
with the local-density approximation for modeling two-dimensional
nano-structures connected phase-coherently to two infinite leads. Using the
non-equilibrium Green's function method the electron density and the current
are calculated under a bias voltage. The problem of solving for the Green's
functions numerically is formulated using the finite-element method (FEM). The
Green's functions have non-reflecting open boundary conditions to take care of
the infinite size of the system. We show how these boundary conditions are
formulated in the FEM. The scheme is tested by calculating transmission
probabilities for simple model potentials. The potential of the scheme is
demonstrated by determining non-linear current-voltage behaviors of resonant

Gastric cancer and Helicobacter pylori: a combined analysis of 12 case control studies nested within prospective cohorts
BACKGROUND: The magnitude of the association
between Helicobacter pylori and
incidence of gastric cancer is unclear. H
pylori infection and the circulating antibody
response can be lost with development
of cancer; thus retrospective studies
are subject to bias resulting from classifi-
cation of cases as H pylori negative when
they were infected in the past.
AIMS: To combine data from all case control
studies nested within prospective
cohorts to assess more reliably the relative
risk of gastric cancer associated with H
pylori infection.To investigate variation in
relative risk by age, sex, cancer type and
subsite, and interval between blood sampling
and cancer diagnosis.
METHODS: Studies were eligible if blood
samples for H pylori serology were collected
before diagnosis of gastric cancer in
cases. Identified published studies and two
unpublished studies were included. Individual
subject data were obtained for
each. Matched odds ratios (ORs) and 95%
confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated
for the association between H pylori
and gastric cancer.
RESULTS: Twelve studies with 1228 gastric
cancer cases were considered. The association
with H pylori was restricted to noncardia
cancers (OR 3.0; 95% CI 2.3–3.8)
and was stronger when blood samples for
H pylori serology were collected 10+ years
before cancer diagnosis (5.9; 3.4–10.3). H
pylori infection was not associated with an
altered overall risk of cardia cancer (1.0;
0.7–1.4).
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that
5.9 is the best estimate of the relative risk
of non-cardia cancer associated with H
pylori infection and that H pylori does not
increase the risk of cardia cancer. They
also support the idea that when H pylori
status is assessed close to cancer diagnosis,
the magnitude of the non-cardia
association may be underestimated
Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

Variation in PAH-related DNA adduct levels among non-smokers: The role of multiple genetic polymorphisms and nucleotide excision repair phenotype
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) likely play a role in many cancers even in never-smokers. We tried to find a model to explain the relationship between variation in PAH-related DNA adduct levels among people with similar exposures, multiple genetic polymorphisms in genes related to metabolic and repair pathways, and nucleotide excision repair (NER) capacity. In 111 randomly selected female never-smokers from the Golestan Cohort Study in Iran, we evaluated 21 SNPs in 14 genes related to xenobiotic metabolism and 12 SNPs in eight DNA repair genes. NER capacity was evaluated by a modified comet assay, and aromatic DNA adduct levels were measured in blood by32P-postlabeling. Multivariable regression models were compared by Akaike's information criterion (AIC). Aromatic DNA adduct levels ranged between 1.7 and 18.6 per 108 nucleotides (mean: 5.8 ± 3.1). DNA adduct level was significantly lower in homozygotes for NAT2 slow alleles and ERCC5 non-risk-allele genotype, and was higher in the MPO homozygote risk-allele genotype. The sum of risk alleles in these genes significantly correlated with the log-adduct level (r = 0.4, p < 0.001). Compared with the environmental model, adding Phase I SNPs and NER capacity provided the best fit, and could explain 17% more of the variation in adduct levels. NER capacity was affected by polymorphisms in the MTHFR and ERCC1 genes. Female non-smokers in this population had PAH-related DNA adduct levels three to four times higher than smokers and occupationally-exposed groups in previous studies, with large inter-individual variation which could best be explained by a combination of Phase I genes and NER capacity. A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons
We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV
using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of
the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference
is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.
