    Evidence for a very slow X-ray pulsar in 2S0114+650 from RXTE All-Sky Monitor Observations

    Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM) observations of the X-ray binary 2S0114+650 show modulations at periods close to both the optically derived orbital period (11.591 days) and proposed pulse period (~ 2.7 hr). The pulse period shows frequency and intensity variability during the more than 2 years of ASM observations analyzed. The pulse properties are consistent with this arising from accretion onto a rotating neutron star and this would be the slowest such period known. The shape of the orbital light curve shows modulation over the course of the entire orbit and a comparison is made with the orbital light curve of Vela X-1. However, the expected phase of eclipse, based on an extrapolation of the optical ephemeris, does not correspond with the observed orbital minimum. The orbital period derived from the ASM light curve is also slightly longer than the optical period.Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journal, 1999, volume 511. 9 figure

    Despite the general prosperity of this country, a cursory survey of any American town or city will reveal that many Americans live in housing which is substandard. Frequently one sees unpainted houses characterized by broken windows and inadequate sanitary facilities. In urban areas, the ever present tenement is often filled with too many people and not enough toilets; stairs are dangerous and refuse lies uncollected in the halls. Rooms without windows are common, while those blessed with windows frequently receive little light--the only view is another window of another building. Disease and discomfort are everywhere.These conditions, however, are neither new nor unnoticed.Throughout American history, individuals as well as various levels of government have attempted to remedy, or at least alleviate, the housing problem. This study will explore one such effort--the federally-financed, locally-administered public housing program created by the Housing Act of 1937. Consequently, throughout this study, the term public housing, describing any period after 1937,refers only to the product of this Act, unless otherwise indicated. This study does not concern federally-funded housing programs such as Federal Housing Authority mortgage guarantees, rehabilitation of existing dwellings, and self-help programs

    Surface thermal emission has been detected by ROSAT from four nearby young neutron stars. Assuming black body emission, the significant pulsations of the observed light curves can be interpreted as due to large surface temperature differences produced by the effect of the crustal magnetic field on the flow of heat from the hot interior toward the cooler surface.     Gamma Radiation from PSR B1055-52

    The telescopes on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) have observed PSR B1055-52 a number of times between 1991 and 1998. From these data, a more detailed picture of the gamma radiation from this source has been developed, showing several characteristics which distinguish this pulsar: the light curve is complex; there is no detectable unpulsed emission; the energy spectrum is flat, with no evidence of a sharp high-energy cutoff up to >4 GeV. Comparisons of the gamma-ray data with observations at longer wavelengths show that no two of the known gamma-ray pulsars have quite the same characteristics; this diversity make s interpretation in terms of theoretical models difficult.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures and 1 separate table, accepted for publication in Ap

    Effect of β2-adrenergic receptor stimulation on lung fluid in stable heart failure patients

    Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine 1) if stable heart-failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) have elevated extravascular lung water (EVLW) versus healthy control subjects, and 2) the effect of acute β2AR agonist inhalation on lung fluid balance. Methods: Twenty-two stable HFrEF patients and 18 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were studied. Lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), alveolar-capillary conductance (DmCO), pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc) (via rebreathe) and lung tissue volume (Vtis) (via computed tomography) were assessed before and within 30 min of administration of nebulized albuterol. EVLW was derived as Vtis – Vc. Results: Pre-albuterol, Vtis and EVLW were greater in HFrEF vs. control (998 ± 200 vs. 884 ± 123 ml, P = 0.041; 943 ± 202 vs. 802 ± 133 ml, P = 0.015, respectively). Albuterol decreased Vtis and EVLW in HFrEF (−4.6 ± 7.8%, P = 0.010; −4.6 ± 8.8%, P = 0.018) and control (−2.8 ± 4.9%, P = 0.029; −3.0 ± 5.7%, P = 0.045). There was an inverse relationship between pre-albuterol values and the pre- to post-albuterol change for EVLW (r2 = −0.264, P = 0.015) and DmCO (r2 = −0.343, P = 0.004) in HFrEF only. Conclusion: Lung fluid is elevated in stable HFrEF patients relative to healthy subjects. Stimulation of the β2ARs may cause fluid removal in HFrEF, especially in patients who exhibit greater evidence for increased lung water at baseline

But even a strong, healthy industry must be sensitive to change--and take advantage of new opportunities for growth and improvement.     Measurement of inclusive charged current interactions on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

    The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of inclusive charged current interactions of muon neutrinos on carbon with an average energy of 0.8 GeV using the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. We compare our measurement with two neutrino interaction simulations: NEUT and NUANCE. The charged current interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3% for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio measurements to absolute cross section values.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures. Accepted by Phys. Rev. D.     Search for Charged Current Coherent Pion Production on Carbon in a Few-GeV Neutrino Beam

    The SciBooNE Collaboration has performed a search for charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, \nu_\mu ^{12}C \to \mu^- ^{12}C \pi^+, with two distinct data samples. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67\times 10^{-2} at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36\times 10^{-2} at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, Minor revisions to match version accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Multiwavelength Observations of LS I +61 303 with VERITAS, Swift and RXTE

    We present results from a long-term monitoring campaign on the TeV binary LSI +61 303 with VERITAS at energies above 500 GeV, and in the 2-10 keV hard X-ray bands with RXTE and Swift, sampling nine 26.5 day orbital cycles between September 2006 and February 2008. The binary was observed by VERITAS to be variable, with all integrated observations resulting in a detection at the 8.8 sigma (2006/2007) and 7.3 sigma (2007/2008) significance level for emission above 500 GeV. The source was detected during active periods with flux values ranging from 5 to 20% of the Crab Nebula, varying over the course of a single orbital cycle. Additionally, the observations conducted in the 2007-2008 observing season show marginal evidence (at the 3.6 sigma significance level) for TeV emission outside of the apastron passage of the compact object around the Be star. Contemporaneous hard X-ray observations with RXTE and Swift show large variability with flux values typically varying between 0.5 and 3.0*10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 over a single orbital cycle. The contemporaneous X-ray and TeV data are examined and it is shown that the TeV sampling is not dense enough to detect a correlation between the two bands.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, 2 table, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Detection of Extended VHE Gamma Ray Emission from G106.3+2.7 with VERITAS

    We report the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7. Observations performed in 2008 with the VERITAS atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope resolve extended emission overlapping the elongated radio SNR. The 7.3 sigma (pre-trials) detection has a full angular extent of roughly 0.6deg by 0.4deg. Most notably, the centroid of the VHE emission is centered near the peak of the coincident 12CO (J = 1-0) emission, 0.4deg away from the pulsar PSR J2229+6114, situated at the northern end of the SNR. Evidently the current-epoch particles from the pulsar wind nebula are not participating in the gamma-ray production. The VHE energy spectrum measured with VERITAS is well characterized by a power law dN/dE = N_0(E/3 TeV)^{-G} with a differential index of G = 2.29 +/- 0.33stat +/- 0.30sys and a flux of N_0 = (1.15 +/- 0.27stat +/- 0.35sys)x 10^{-13} cm^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}. The integral flux above 1 TeV corresponds to ~5 percent of the steady Crab Nebula emission above the same energy. We describe the observations and analysis of the object and briefly discuss the implications of the detection in a multiwavelength context.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
