    Elucidating the roles of miR-372 in cell proliferation and apoptosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma TW01 cells

    Aim: Deregulation of microRNA has been associated with cancer progression and the modification of cancer phenotypes could be achieved by targeting microRNA expression. This study aimed to determine the effects of miR-372 on cell progression and gene expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, TW01. Materials and Methods: NPC TW01 cells were transfected with the miR-372 precursor molecules. Gene expression studies were conducted using RT-PCR assays for nine cancer related genes. The effects of miR-372 on cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were also investigated. Results: Expression of ­miR-372 caused cell cycle arrest at the S phase that was accompanied by an overall decrease of cells entering the G2/M phase. miR-372 did not have any significant effect on apoptosis. Of the nine genes studied, four were up-regulated, namely CDKN1A, INCA1, LATS2 and BIRC5. The other five genes — CDK2, CCNA1, TP53, BAX and BCL2 were down-regulated by miR-372. Conclusion: This preliminary study indicated the tumor suppressing roles of miR-372 in cell cycle progression of TW01 cells, possibly via the down-regulation of CDK2 and CCNA1 as well as the up-regulation of CDKN1A and INCA1.Key Words: apoptosis, microRNA, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, miR-372, CDK2, CCNA1

    Recognizing a road environment using multiple-window bag of features

    The idea of Bag of Features (BoF) is recently often employed for general object recognition. But, as it does not take positional relations of detected features into account, the recognition rate is still not very high for practical use. This paper proposes a method of describing the feature of an object by the BoF representation which considers positional information of the features. Although the original BoF representation is applied to an entire image, the proposed method employs multiple windows on an image. The BoF representation is applied to each of the windows to represent an object in the image interested for recognition.     Individual differences in interpersonal emotion regulation: What makes some people more (or less) successful than others?

    People vary in the effectiveness with which they can change the way that others feel, yet we know surprisingly little about what drives these individual differences in interpersonal emotion regulation success. This paper provides a framework for describing ‘success’ in interpersonal emotion regulation and synthesizes extant theory and research regarding how personality and cognitive ability relate to interpersonal emotion regulation success. In doing so, our review brings together work from several related fields to offer an integrative framework to generate and guide future research that aims to understand why some people are proficient at influencing the emotions of others and why some are not, often suffering additional unintended consequences, such as diminished work or relationship success

    Tocotrienol-rich fraction supplementation modulates antioxidant enzymes activity and reduces DNA damage in APPswe/PS1dE9 Alzheimer’s Disease Mouse Model

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by deterioration of the brain functions that result in impairment of memory, cognition and behavioural functions. Oxidative stress is well known to be one of the causative factors for AD. Thus this disease is potentially modulated by natural antioxidants such as vitamin E. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) supplementation on antioxidant enzymes and DNA damage using APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic mouse model of AD. Animals were supplemented with TRF (200 mg/kg) or alpha-tocopherol (αT) (200 mg/kg) for six months starting from nine months old. We found that superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in AD mouse was decreased by supplementation of TRF and αT as compared with AD control mouse with no significant differences in glutathione peroxidise (GPx) activity in all groups. TRF supplementation significantly increased catalase (CAT) activity. The level of DNA damage of AD mouse shows significant decrease with supplementation of TRF and αT. In conclusion, TRF was able to modulate antioxidant enzymes activity and decreased the level of DNA damage of AD transgenic mouse model

    Do Vietnamese state-dominated listed firms face finance constraints?

    Using accounting data of listed firms on the Vietnamese stock market this study documents that listed Vietnamese firms still face finance constraints, even after the introduction and rapid growth of the equity markets and the privatization wave that started since 1992. Contrary to most of the existing literature, especially large state-dominated firms were documented to be significantly more financially constrained.The cash flow sensitivity differences between the statedominated and private firms are economically large but statistically not significant.These findings are still consistent for both stock exchanges of Vietnam (HOSE and HNX)

    Time series modeling of cell cycle exit identifies Brd4 dependent regulation of cerebellar neurogenesis

    Cerebellar neuronal progenitors undergo a series of divisions before irreversibly exiting the cell cycle and differentiating into neurons. Dysfunction of this process underlies many neurological diseases including ataxia and the most common pediatric brain tumor, medulloblastoma. To better define the pathways controlling the most abundant neuronal cells in the mammalian cerebellum, cerebellar granule cell progenitors (GCPs), we performed RNA-sequencing of GCPs exiting the cell cycle. Time-series modeling of GCP cell cycle exit identified downregulation of activity of the epigenetic reader protein Brd4. Brd4 binding to the Gli1 locus is controlled by Casein Kinase 1δ (CK1 δ)-dependent phosphorylation during GCP proliferation, and decreases during GCP cell cycle exit. Importantly, conditional deletion of Brd4 in vivo in the developing cerebellum induces cerebellar morphological deficits and ataxia. These studies define an essential role for Brd4 in cerebellar granule cell neurogenesis and are critical for designing clinical trials utilizing Brd4 inhibitors in neurological indications

    On the mechanism of ubiquinone mediated photocurrent generation by a reaction center based photocathode

    Upon photoexcitation, the reaction center (RC) pigment-proteins that facilitate natural photosynthesis achieve a metastable separation of electrical charge among the embedded cofactors. Because of the high quantum efficiency of this process, there is a growing interest in their incorporation into biohybrid materials for solar energy conversion, bioelectronics and biosensing. Multiple bioelectrochemical studies have shown that reaction centers from various photosynthetic organisms can be interfaced with diverse electrode materials for the generation of photocurrents, but many mechanistic aspects of native protein functionality in a non-native environment is unknown. In vivo, RC's catalyse ubiquinone-10 reduction, protonation and exchange with other lipid phase ubiquinone-10s via protein-controlled spatial orientation and protein rearrangement. In contrast, the mechanism of ubiquinone-0 reduction, used to facilitate fast RC turnover in an aqueous photoelectrochemical cell (PEC), may not proceed via the same pathway as the native cofactor. In this report we show truncation of the native isoprene tail results in larger RC turnover rates in a PEC despite the removal of the tail's purported role of ubiquinone headgroup orientation and binding. Through the use of reaction centers with single or double mutations, we also show the extent to which two-electron/two-proton ubiquinone chemistry that operates in vivo also underpins the ubiquinone-0 reduction by surface-adsorbed RCs in a PEC. This reveals that only the ubiquinone headgroup is critical to the fast turnover of the RC in a PEC and provides insight into design principles for the development of new biophotovoltaic cells and biosensors

    The Russo-Ukrainian Conflict has had significant repercussions on Ukraine’s healthcare system, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to healthcare institutions. The disruption of personnel, medical supplies, and patient transportation has created considerable challenges for healthcare services. However, there are successful approaches from comparable contexts that can serve as a catalyst for post-conflict healthcare reformation in Ukraine. Key strategies include improving healthcare accessibility for marginalized populations through standardized essential health and surgical care packages, rehabilitating damaged facilities, strengthening primary care provisions, and supporting war survivors with disabilities. By adopting these proven practices, Ukraine can stren gthen its healthcare system and facilitate a sustainable recovery, contributing to the country’s resilience and ensuring essential healthcare services for its population
