Search for ZZ and ZW Production in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for ZZ and ZW vector boson pair production in ppbar
collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV using the leptonic decay channels ZZ --> ll nu
nu, ZZ --> l l l' l' and ZW --> l l l' nu. In a data sample corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 194 pb-1 collected with the Collider Detector at
Fermilab, 3 candidate events are found with an expected background of 1.0 +/-
0.2 events. We set a 95% confidence level upper limit of 15.2 pb on the cross
section for ZZ plus ZW production, compared to the standard model prediction of

Measurement of the Cross Section for Prompt Diphoton Production in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in
collisions at using a data sample of 207
pb collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II).
The background from non-prompt sources is determined using a statistical method
based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is
measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the
diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found

Plant-symbiotic fungi as chemical engineers: multi-genome analysis of the Clavicipitaceae reveals dynamics of alkaloid Loci
The fungal family Clavicipitaceae includes plant symbionts and parasites that produce several psychoactive and bioprotective alkaloids. The family includes grass symbionts in the epichloae clade (Epichloë and Neotyphodium species), which are extraordinarily diverse both in their host interactions and in their alkaloid profiles. Epichloae produce alkaloids of four distinct classes, all of which deter insects, and some—including the infamous ergot alkaloids—have potent effects on mammals. The exceptional chemotypic diversity of the epichloae may relate to their broad range of host interactions, whereby some are pathogenic and contagious, others are mutualistic and vertically transmitted (seed-borne), and still others vary in pathogenic or mutualistic behavior. We profiled the alkaloids and sequenced the genomes of 10 epichloae, three ergot fungi (Claviceps species), a morning-glory symbiont (Periglandula ipomoeae), and a bamboo pathogen (Aciculosporium take), and compared the gene clusters for four classes of alkaloids. Results indicated a strong tendency for alkaloid loci to have conserved cores that specify the skeleton structures and peripheral genes that determine chemical variations that are known to affect their pharmacological specificities. Generally, gene locations in cluster peripheries positioned them near to transposon-derived, AT-rich repeat blocks, which were probably involved in gene losses, duplications, and neofunctionalizations. The alkaloid loci in the epichloae had unusual structures riddled with large, complex, and dynamic repeat blocks. This feature was not reflective of overall differences in repeat contents in the genomes, nor was it characteristic of most other specialized metabolism loci. The organization and dynamics of alkaloid loci and abundant repeat blocks in the epichloae suggested that these fungi are under selection for alkaloid diversification. We suggest that such selection is related to the variable life histories of the epichloae, their protective roles as symbionts, and their associations with the highly speciose and ecologically diverse cool-season grasses
Search for electroweak single top quark production in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We report on a search for Standard Model t-channel and s-channel single top
quark production in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We
use a data sample corresponding to 162 pb^{-1} recorded by the upgraded
Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no significant evidence for electroweak
top quark production and set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the
production cross section, consistent with the Standard Model: 10.1 pb for the
t-channel, 13.6 pb for the s-channel and 17.8 pb for the combined cross section

Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section in p(p)over-barcollisions at root s=1.96 TeV using kinematic fitting of b-tagged lepton plus jet events
We report a measurement of the t (t) over bar production cross section using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data consist of events with an energetic electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and three or more hadronic jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-quark jet by reconstructing a secondary vertex. The background fraction is determined from a fit of the transverse energy of the leading jet. Using 162 +/- 10 pb(-1) of data, the total cross section is found to be 6.0 +/- 1.6(stat.)+/- 1.2(syst.) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction
