Stochastic analysis of different rough surfaces
This paper shows in detail the application of a new stochastic approach for
the characterization of surface height profiles, which is based on the theory
of Markov processes. With this analysis we achieve a characterization of the
scale dependent complexity of surface roughness by means of a Fokker-Planck or
Langevin equation, providing the complete stochastic information of multiscale
joint probabilities. The method is applied to several surfaces with different
properties, for the purpose of showing the utility of this method in more
details. In particular we show the evidence of Markov properties, and we
estimate the parameters of the Fokker-Planck equation by pure, parameter-free
data analysis. The resulting Fokker-Planck equations are verified by numerical
reconstruction of conditional probability density functions. The results are
compared with those from the analysis of multi-affine and extended multi-affine
scaling properties which is often used for surface topographies. The different
surface structures analysed here show in details advantages and disadvantages

Gauged Inflation
We propose a model for cosmic inflation which is based on an effective
description of strongly interacting, nonsupersymmetric matter within the
framework of dynamical Abelian projection and centerization. The underlying
gauge symmetry is assumed to be with . Appealing to a
thermodynamical treatment, the ground-state structure of the model is
classically determined by a potential for the inflaton field (dynamical
monopole condensate) which allows for nontrivially BPS saturated and thereby
stable solutions. For this leads to decoupling of gravity from the
inflaton dynamics. The ground state dynamics implies a heat capacity for the
vacuum leading to inflation for temperatures comparable to the mass scale
of the potential. The dynamics has an attractor property. In contrast to the
usual slow-roll paradigm we have during inflation. As a consequence,
density perturbations generated from the inflaton are irrelevant for the
formation of large-scale structure, and the model has to be supplemented with
an inflaton independent mechanism for the generation of spatial curvature
perturbations. Within a small fraction of the Hubble time inflation is
terminated by a transition of the theory to its center symmetric phase. The
spontaneously broken symmetry stabilizes relic vector bosons in the
epochs following inflation. These heavy relics contribute to the cold dark
matter of the universe and potentially originate the UHECRs beyond the GZK

The VMC Survey. V. First results for Classical Cepheids
The VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC, PI M.R. Cioni) survey is collecting deep
Ks-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted by the
system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds (MCs) and the "bridge" connecting
them. In this paper we present the first results for Classical Cepheids, from
the VMC observations of two fields in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The VMC
Ks-band light curves of the Cepheids are well sampled (12-epochs) and of
excellent precision. We were able to measure for the first time the Ks
magnitude of the faintest Classical Cepheids in the LMC (Ks\sim17.5 mag), which
are mostly pulsating in the First Overtone (FO) mode, and to obtain FO
Period-Luminosity (PL), Period-Wesenheit (PW), and Period-Luminosity-Color
(PLC) relations, spanning the full period range from 0.25 to 6 day. Since the
longest period Cepheid in our dataset has a variability period of 23 day, we
have complemented our sample with literature data for brighter F Cepheids. On
this basis we have built a PL relation in the Ks band that, for the first time,
includes short period pulsators, and spans the whole range from 1.6 to 100 days
in period. We also provide the first ever empirical PW and PLC relations using
the (V-Ks) color and time-series Ks photometry. The very small dispersion
(\sim0.07 mag) of these relations makes them very well suited to study the
three-dimensional (3D) geometry of the Magellanic system. The use of "direct"
(parallax- and Baade-Wesselink- based) distance measurements to both Galactic
and LMC Cepheids, allowed us to calibrate the zero points of the PL, PW, and
PLC relations obtained in this paper, and in turn to estimate an absolute
distance modulus of (m-M)0=18.46\pm0.03 for the LMC. This result is in
agreement with most of the latest literature determinations based on Classical

Cosmological parameters constraints from galaxy cluster mass function measurements in combination with other cosmological data
We present the cosmological parameters constraints obtained from the
combination of galaxy cluster mass function measurements (Vikhlinin et al.,
2009a,b) with new cosmological data obtained during last three years: updated
measurements of cosmic microwave background anisotropy with Wilkinson Microwave
Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observatory, and at smaller angular scales with South
Pole Telescope (SPT), new Hubble constant measurements, baryon acoustic
oscillations and supernovae Type Ia observations.
New constraints on total neutrino mass and effective number of neutrino
species are obtained. In models with free number of massive neutrinos the
constraints on these parameters are notably less strong, and all considered
cosmological data are consistent with non-zero total neutrino mass \Sigma m_\nu
\approx 0.4 eV and larger than standard effective number of neutrino species,
N_eff \approx 4. These constraints are compared to the results of neutrino
oscillations searches at short baselines.
The updated dark energy equation of state parameters constraints are
presented. We show that taking in account systematic uncertainties, current
cluster mass function data provide similarly powerful constraints on dark
energy equation of state, as compared to the constraints from supernovae Type

Low Q^2 Jet Production at HERA and Virtual Photon Structure
The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is
investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by
the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet
cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the
transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual
photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3
< y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the
virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations
which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2.Comment: 20 pages, 5 Figure
Hadron Production in Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering
Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic
positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1
experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the
centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy
flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared
transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a
function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p
centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the
fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte
Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the
partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard

Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and
non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is
presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a
large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The
transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of
estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo
QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS
exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the
scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of
perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be
the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the
measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic scattering, in which a
sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative
effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general

A Search for Selectrons and Squarks at HERA
Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV
are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the
minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the
lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and
hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal
is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95%
confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark
masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figure
Measurement of D* Meson Cross Sections at HERA and Determination of the Gluon Density in the Proton using NLO QCD
With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D* meson production cross
sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum
transfers Q^2>2 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around W(gamma p)~ 88
GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe
the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental
uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in
the proton, x_g g(x_g), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range
7.5x10^{-4}< x_g <4x10^{-2} at average scales mu^2 =25 to 50 GeV2. The gluon
momentum fraction x_g has been obtained from the measured kinematics of the
scattered electron and the D* meson in the final state. The results compare
well with the gluon distribution obtained from the analysis of scaling

"Now we are in a different time; various bad diseases have come." understanding men's acceptability of male circumcision for HIV prevention in a moderate prevalence setting
Background: Adult male surgical circumcision (MC) has been shown to reduce HIV acquisition in men and is recommended by the WHO for inclusion in comprehensive national HIV prevention programs in high prevalence settings. Only limited research to date has been conducted in countries experiencing moderate burden epidemics, where the acceptability, operational feasibility and potential epidemiological impact of MC remain unclear. Methods. A multi-method qualitative research study was conducted at four sites in Papua New Guinea (PNG), with 24 focus group discussions and 65 in-depth interviews carried out among 276 men. Results: The majority of men were in favour of MC being introduced for HIV prevention in PNG and considered improved genital hygiene, enhanced sexual pleasure and culturally appropriateness key factors in the acceptability of a future intervention. A minority of men were against the introduction of MC, primarily due to concerns regarding sexual risk compensation and that the intervention went against prevailing cultural and religious beliefs. Conclusion: This is one of the first community-based MC acceptability studies conducted in a moderate prevalence setting outside of Africa. Research findings from this study suggest that a future MC program for HIV prevention would be widely accepted by men in PNG
