Implementing a Dairy Education Module in Private Inner-City High Schools

The objective of this project was to determine how knowledgeable private inner-city high school students are about basic information regarding the dairy industry. The project also sought to identify areas of interest these students may have concerning the dairy industry. Upon determining the level of knowledge and areas of interest an online dairy education module covering two main lessons was created. A survey was conducted to identify what type of information to include in the module. The survey was conducted through an online database and consisted of twenty questions. Different styles of questions were used to collect sound data that could be analyzed with ease. A random sample of upper division private inner-city San Francisco high school students participated in the survey. The sample size consisted of 65 students and resulted in a 70.8 percent response rate. The results of the survey displayed that majority of the students who participated have little to no knowledge about the dairy industry. Based on the questions that were mostly answered incorrectly, an online module was created. The module targets two main ideas: basic dairy cow information and basic dairy production material. Based on current trends in technology, it was determined that an online module would be the best way to allow easy access to inner-city students to learn more about the dairy industry. The module is easily accessible and simple to implement in the classroom, in homes, and anywhere internet is available via the mobile version. The module allows for a new pool of potential future dairy industry employees to become interested in attending higher education programs targeting this industry

A Preliminary study on bats in a Small-scale Mining Site in South central Mindanao, Philippines

Land-use change and its associated activities have been strongly linked to the decline of many bat species populations glob- ally. This study was conducted with a primary goal to document the bat diversity on a small scale mining site in Baranggay Kinayao, Bagumbayan, Sultan, Kudarat, Philippines. A total of 227 individuals were identified, representing two families (Pteropodidae and Hipposideridae), eight genera, and eight species of bats. Three species are endemic to the Philippines namely Haplonycteris fischeri, Ptenochirus jagori, and the Vulnerable Megaerops wetmorei. Pteropodid Cynopterus brachyotis were found to be the most dominant and tolerant species in the area compared to all species combined. In addition, a significant decrease in bat activity was noted during active blasting period, as evidenced by a low capture rate compared to non-blasting period. This preliminary finding suggests the need for further exploration of how human-induced noise increase the effects of the land-use change to bat diversity and population

Generation of Industrial Electricity and Heat Demand Profiles for Energy System Analysis

To achieve Germany's climate targets, the industrial sector, among others, must be transformed. The decarbonization of industry through the electrification of heating processes is a promising option. In order to investigate this transformation in energy system models, high-resolution temporal demand profiles of the heat and electricity applications for different industries are required. This paper presents a method for generating synthetic electricity and heat load profiles for 14 industry types. Using this methodology, annual profiles with a 15-minute resolution can be generated for both energy demands. First, daily profiles for the electricity demand were generated for 4 different production days. These daily profiles are additionally subdivided into eight end-use application categories. Finally, white noise is applied to the profile of the mechanical drives. The heat profile is similar to the electrical but is subdivided into four temperature ranges and the two applications hot water and space heating. The space heating application is additionally adjusted to the average monthly outdoor temperature. Hair It Is: Examining the Experiences of Black Women with Natural Hair
