    Pseudospectra of waveform relaxation operators

    Abstract--The performance of the waveform relaxation method for solving systems of ODEs depends largely on the choices that are made for splitting, size of time window, and preconditioning. Although it is known that superlinear convergence is obtained on finite time windows, the convergence may be slow in the first few iterations. We propose the use of pseudcepectra to analyze the convergence ratio of the first few iterations when waveform relaxation is applied to linear systems of ODEs. Through pseudcepectral radii, we can examine the effect of preconditioning and overlapping on the rate of convergence. We may also use this to estimate a suitable size of the time window. Numerical experiments performed on a system of ODEs arising from the discretization of an advection-diffusion equation confirm the validity of the obtained estimates. (~) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.     Mellom vilje og valg – en drøfting av tjenesteyternes handlinger og begrunnelser i fire eksempler på insisterende praksis

    Sentrale formål for helse- og omsorgstjenester er å ivareta tjenestemottakeres helse og verdighet, og bidra til likeverd og en tilværelse i fellesskap med andre. Frivillighetsprinsippet står sterkt, og tjenestetilbudet skal så langt som mulig utformes og gjennomføres i samarbeid med tjenestemottaker. Men noen ganger kommer disse hensynene i konflikt. Det gjenspeiles for eksempel i helse- og omsorgstjenestelovens kapittel 9, som kan hjemle tvang overfor personer med utviklingshemming for å avverge vesentlig skade. Men også i situasjoner som ikke gir hjemmel for tvang kan det stå hensyn på spill som setter tjenesteytere i krevende dilemmaer. I noen tilfeller har tjenestemottakere med kognitiv svikt ikke nok innsikt i konsekvensene av det de tar til uttrykk for til at de kan sies å gjøre informerte valg. I artikkelen drøfter vi fire konkrete eksempler fra tjenester til personer med utviklingshemming der tjenesteytere velger å ta i bruk «insisterende praksiser» – det vil si at de griper inn i tjenestemottakers selvbestemmelse på måter som ikke vil regnes som tvang. Drøftingen viser at det å skille mellom viljesuttrykk og informerte valg kan bli vesentlig hvis tjenesteytere skal avstå fra urettmessig påvirkning, men samtidig oppfylle tjenestemottakeres rett til forsvarlige tjenester. Det peker også på at det kan være behov for å betone dette skillet sterkere i lovregulering av inngrep i utviklingshemmedes selvbestemmelse. Dilemmaene vi skisserer opptrer også i tjenesteyting til andre pasienter og brukere med svekket kognitiv funksjon, som personer med demens og noen personer med alvorlig psykisk lidelse og/eller rusvansker. På grunnlag av drøftingen av fire eksempler på insisterende praksis, skisserer vi noen generelle kompetansebehov som kan følge av behovet for å skille mellom viljesuttrykk og informerte valg hos tjenestemottakere

    Roaring high and low: composition and possible functions of the Iberian stag's vocal repertoire

    We provide a detailed description of the rutting vocalisations of free-ranging male Iberian deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus, Hilzheimer 1909), a geographically isolated and morphologically differentiated subspecies of red deer Cervus elaphus. We combine spectrographic examinations, spectral analyses and automated classifications to identify different call types, and compare the composition of the vocal repertoire with that of other red deer subspecies. Iberian stags give bouts of roars (and more rarely, short series of barks) that are typically composed of two different types of calls. Long Common Roars are mostly given at the beginning or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a high fundamental frequency (F0) resulting in poorly defined formant frequencies but a relatively high amplitude. In contrast, Short Common Roars are typically given in the middle or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a lower F0 resulting in relatively well defined vocal tract resonances, but low amplitude. While we did not identify entirely Harsh Roars (as described in the Scottish red deer subspecies (Cervus elaphus scoticus), a small percentage of Long Common Roars contained segments of deterministic chaos. We suggest that the evolution of two clearly distinct types of Common Roars may reflect divergent selection pressures favouring either vocal efficiency in high pitched roars or the communication of body size in low-pitched, high spectral density roars highlighting vocal tract resonances. The clear divergence of the Iberian red deer vocal repertoire from those of other documented European red deer populations reinforces the status of this geographical variant as a distinct subspecies

    Do red deer stags (Cervus elaphus) use roar fundamental frequency (F0) to assess rivals?

    It is well established that in humans, male voices are disproportionately lower pitched than female voices, and recent studies suggest that this dimorphism in fundamental frequency (F0) results from both intrasexual (male competition) and intersexual (female mate choice) selection for lower pitched voices in men. However, comparative investigations indicate that sexual dimorphism in F0 is not universal in terrestrial mammals. In the highly polygynous and sexually dimorphic Scottish red deer Cervus elaphus scoticus, more successful males give sexually-selected calls (roars) with higher minimum F0s, suggesting that high, rather than low F0s advertise quality in this subspecies. While playback experiments demonstrated that oestrous females prefer higher pitched roars, the potential role of roar F0 in male competition remains untested. Here we examined the response of rutting red deer stags to playbacks of re-synthesized male roars with different median F0s. Our results show that stags’ responses (latencies and durations of attention, vocal and approach responses) were not affected by the F0 of the roar. This suggests that intrasexual selection is unlikely to strongly influence the evolution of roar F0 in Scottish red deer stags, and illustrates how the F0 of terrestrial mammal vocal sexual signals may be subject to different selection pressures across species. Further investigations on species characterized by different F0 profiles are needed to provide a comparative background for evolutionary interpretations of sex differences in mammalian vocalizations

    Campbell's Monkeys Use Affixation to Alter Call Meaning

    Human language has evolved on a biological substrate with phylogenetic roots deep in the primate lineage. Here, we describe a functional analogy to a common morphological process in human speech, affixation, in the alarm calls of free-ranging adult Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli campbelli). We found that male alarm calls are composed of an acoustically variable stem, which can be followed by an acoustically invariable suffix. Using long-term observations and predator simulation experiments, we show that suffixation in this species functions to broaden the calls' meaning by transforming a highly specific eagle alarm to a general arboreal disturbance call or by transforming a highly specific leopard alarm call to a general alert call. We concluded that, when referring to specific external events, non-human primates can generate meaningful acoustic variation during call production that is functionally equivalent to suffixation in human language

    Humoral immunity to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination in multiple sclerosis: the relevance of time since last rituximab infusion and first experience from sporadic revaccinations

    Introduction The effect of disease-modifying therapies (DMT) on vaccine responses is largely unknown. Understanding the development of protective immunity is of paramount importance to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective To characterise humoral immunity after mRNA-COVID-19 vaccination of people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Methods All pwMS in Norway fully vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 were invited to a national screening study. Humoral immunity was assessed by measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 SPIKE RBD IgG response 3–12 weeks after full vaccination, and compared with healthy subjects. Results 528 pwMS and 627 healthy subjects were included. Reduced humoral immunity (anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG <70 arbitrary units) was present in 82% and 80% of all pwMS treated with fingolimod and rituximab, respectively, while patients treated with other DMT showed similar rates as healthy subjects and untreated pwMS. We found a significant correlation between time since the last rituximab dose and the development of humoral immunity. Revaccination in two seronegative patients induced a weak antibody response. Conclusions Patients treated with fingolimod or rituximab should be informed about the risk of reduced humoral immunity and vaccinations should be timed carefully in rituximab patients. Our results identify the need for studies regarding the durability of vaccine responses, the role of cellular immunity and revaccinations.     Perception of Male Caller Identity in Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus): Acoustic Analysis and Playback Experiments

    The ability to signal individual identity using vocal signals and distinguish between conspecifics based on vocal cues is important in several mammal species. Furthermore, it can be important for receivers to differentiate between callers in reproductive contexts. In this study, we used acoustic analyses to determine whether male koala bellows are individually distinctive and to investigate the relative importance of different acoustic features for coding individuality. We then used a habituation-discrimination paradigm to investigate whether koalas discriminate between the bellow vocalisations of different male callers. Our results show that male koala bellows are highly individualized, and indicate that cues related to vocal tract filtering contribute the most to vocal identity. In addition, we found that male and female koalas habituated to the bellows of a specific male showed a significant dishabituation when they were presented with bellows from a novel male. The significant reduction in behavioural response to a final rehabituation playback shows this was not a chance rebound in response levels. Our findings indicate that male koala bellows are highly individually distinctive and that the identity of male callers is functionally relevant to male and female koalas during the breeding season. We go on to discuss the biological relevance of signalling identity in this species' sexual communication and the potential practical implications of our findings for acoustic monitoring of male population levels

    Statistical Computing on Non-Linear Spaces for Computational Anatomy

    International audienceComputational anatomy is an emerging discipline that aims at analyzing and modeling the individual anatomy of organs and their biological variability across a population. However, understanding and modeling the shape of organs is made difficult by the absence of physical models for comparing different subjects, the complexity of shapes, and the high number of degrees of freedom implied. Moreover, the geometric nature of the anatomical features usually extracted raises the need for statistics on objects like curves, surfaces and deformations that do not belong to standard Euclidean spaces. We explain in this chapter how the Riemannian structure can provide a powerful framework to build generic statistical computing tools. We show that few computational tools derive for each Riemannian metric can be used in practice as the basic atoms to build more complex generic algorithms such as interpolation, filtering and anisotropic diffusion on fields of geometric features. This computational framework is illustrated with the analysis of the shape of the scoliotic spine and the modeling of the brain variability from sulcal lines where the results suggest new anatomical findings
