Wireless sensor network for cattle monitoring system
This paper describes a cost effective Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology for monitoring the health of dairy cows. By monitoring and understanding the cow individual and herd behaviour, farmers can potentially identify the onset of illness, lameness or other undesirable health conditions. However, the WSN implementation needs to cope with various technical challenges before it can be suitably and routinely applied in cow management. Implementation of a herd management system with wireless sensor networks
This paper investigates an adaptation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to cattle monitoring applications. The proposed solution facilitates the requirement for continuously assessing the condition of individual animals, aggregating and reporting this data to the farm manager. There are several existing approaches to achieving animal monitoring, ranging from using a store and forward mechanism to employing GSM-based techniques; these approaches only provide sporadic information and introduce a considerable cost in staffing and physical hardware. The core of this study is to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks by using alternative cheap, low power consumption sensor nodes capable of providing real-time communication at a reasonable hardware cost. In this paper, both the hardware and software has been designed to provide a solution which can obtain real-time data from dairy cattle whilst conforming to the limitations associated with WSNs implementations
The Bell Laboratories (13)CO Survey: Longitude-Velocity Maps
A survey is presented of the Galactic plane in the J=1-0 transition of
(13)CO. About 73,000 spectra were obtained with the 7 m telescope at Bell
Laboratories over a ten-year period. The coverage of survey is (l, b) = (-5 to
117, -1 to +1), or 244 square degrees, with a grid spacing of 3' for |b| < 0.5,
and a grid spacing of 6' for |b| > 0.5. The data presented here have been
resampled onto a 3' grid. For 0.68 km/s channels, the rms noise level of the
survey is 0.1 K on the scale. The raw data have been transformed into
FITS format, and all the reduction processes, such as correcting for emission
in the reference positions, baseline removal and interpolation were conducted
within IRAF using the FCRAO task package and additional programs. The reduced
data are presented here in the form of longitude-velocity color maps at each
latitude. These data allow identification and classification of molecular
clouds with masses in excess of ~ 1,000 solar masses throughout the first
quadrant of the Galaxy. Spiral structure is manifested by the locations of the

Hydrogen-rich Syngas Production from Ethanol Dry Reforming on La-doped Ni/Al2O3 Catalysts: Effect of Promoter Loading
Ethanol dry reforming has been studied over La-promoted Ni catalysts supported on Al2O3 with different promoter loadings at varying CO2 partial pressure of 20-50 kPa. Catalysts were prepared via co-impregnation technique and characterized using BET surface area, X-ray diffraction measurement, temperature-programmed calcination and scanning electron microscopy. Doped and undoped catalysts possessed high surface area of about 86-108 m2 g-1 and La promoter was well-dispersed on support surface. Xray
diffraction measurements indicated the formation of La2O3, NiO and NiAl2O4 phases in line with temperature-programmed
calcination results. La-addition enhanced the dispersion of NiO particles and reduced the agglomeration of metal oxides. Both C2H5OH and CO2 conversions improved with increasing CO2 partial pressure rationally due to the growing secondary CO2 reforming of CH4 reaction. The ratio of H2/CO produced from ethanol dry reforming varied from 1.1 to 1.4 favored for usage as feedstocks of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The yield of H2 and CO also enhanced with increasing CO2 partial pressure whilst the optimal La loading in terms of C2H5OH conversion was observed at 3%La and catalytic activity increased with promoter addition

Mechanisms of CFTR Functional Variants That Impair Regulated Bicarbonate Permeation and Increase Risk for Pancreatitis but Not for Cystic Fibrosis
CFTR is a dynamically regulated anion channel. Intracellular WNK1-SPAK activation causes CFTR to change permeability and conductance characteristics from a chloride-preferring to bicarbonate-preferring channel through unknown mechanisms. Two severe CFTR mutations (CFTRsev) cause complete loss of CFTR function and result in cystic fibrosis (CF), a severe genetic disorder affecting sweat glands, nasal sinuses, lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, and male reproductive system. We hypothesize that those CFTR mutations that disrupt the WNK1-SPAK activation mechanisms cause a selective, bicarbonate defect in channel function (CFTRBD) affecting organs that utilize CFTR for bicarbonate secretion (e.g. the pancreas, nasal sinus, vas deferens) but do not cause typical CF. To understand the structural and functional requirements of the CFTR bicarbonate-preferring channel, we (a) screened 984 well-phenotyped pancreatitis cases for candidate CFTRBD mutations from among 81 previously described CFTR variants; (b) conducted electrophysiology studies on clones of variants found in pancreatitis but not CF; (c) computationally constructed a new, complete structural model of CFTR for molecular dynamics simulation of wild-type and mutant variants; and (d) tested the newly defined CFTRBD variants for disease in non-pancreas organs utilizing CFTR for bicarbonate secretion. Nine variants (CFTR R74Q, R75Q, R117H, R170H, L967S, L997F, D1152H, S1235R, and D1270N) not associated with typical CF were associated with pancreatitis (OR 1.5, p = 0.002). Clones expressed in HEK 293T cells had normal chloride but not bicarbonate permeability and conductance with WNK1-SPAK activation. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest physical restriction of the CFTR channel and altered dynamic channel regulation. Comparing pancreatitis patients and controls, CFTRBD increased risk for rhinosinusitis (OR 2.3, p<0.005) and male infertility (OR 395, p<<0.0001). WNK1-SPAK pathway-activated increases in CFTR bicarbonate permeability are altered by CFTRBD variants through multiple mechanisms. WDR11-mediated Hedgehog signalling defects underlie a new ciliopathy related to Kallmann syndrome
WDR11 has been implicated in congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and Kallmann syndrome (KS), human developmental genetic disorders defined by delayed puberty and infertility. However, WDR11's role in development is poorly understood. Here, we report that WDR11 modulates the Hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway and is essential for ciliogenesis. Disruption of WDR11 expression in mouse and zebrafish results in phenotypic characteristics associated with defective Hh signalling, accompanied by dysgenesis of ciliated tissues. Wdr11-null mice also exhibit early-onset obesity. We find that WDR11 shuttles from the cilium to the nucleus in response to Hh signalling. WDR11 regulates the proteolytic processing of GLI3 and cooperates with the transcription factor EMX1 in the induction of downstream Hh pathway gene expression and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone production. The CHH/KS-associated human mutations result in loss of function of WDR11. Treatment with the Hh agonist purmorphamine partially rescues the WDR11 haploinsufficiency phenotypes. Our study reveals a novel class of ciliopathy caused by WDR11 mutations and suggests that CHH/KS may be a part of the human ciliopathy spectrum.Peer reviewe

Identification of a Rare Coding Variant in Complement 3 Associated with Age-related Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a common cause of blindness in the elderly. To identify rare coding variants associated with a large increase in risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), we sequenced 2,335 cases and 789 controls in 10 candidate loci (57 genes). To increase power, we augmented our control set with ancestry-matched exome sequenced controls. An analysis of coding variation in 2,268 AMD cases and 2,268 ancestry matched controls revealed two large-effect rare variants; previously described R1210C in the CFH gene (fcase = 0.51%, fcontrol = 0.02%, OR = 23.11), and newly identified K155Q in the C3 gene (fcase = 1.06%, fcontrol = 0.39%, OR = 2.68). The variants suggest decreased inhibition of C3 by Factor H, resulting in increased activation of the alternative complement pathway, as a key component of disease biology
Swift trust and commitment: the missing links for humanitarian supply chain coordination?
Coordination among actors in a humanitarian relief supply chain decides whether a relief operation can be or successful or not. In humanitarian supply chains, due to the urgency and importance of the situation combined with scarce resources, actors have to coordinate and trust each other in order to achieve joint goals. This paper investigated empirically the role of swift trust as mediating variable for achieving supply chain coordination. Based on commitment-trust theory we explore enablers of swift-trust and how swift trust translates into coordination through commitment. Based on a path analytic model we test data from the National Disaster Management Authority of India. Our study is the first testing commitment-trust theory (CTT) in the humanitarian context, highlighting the importance of swift trust and commitment for much thought after coordination. Furthermore, the study shows that information sharing and behavioral uncertainty reduction act as enablers for swift trust. The study findings offer practical guidance and suggest that swift trust is a missing link for the success of humanitarian supply chains
Volumetric Measurements of Lung Nodules with Multi-Detector Row CT: Effect of Changes in Lung Volume
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how changes in lung volume affect volumetric measurements of lung nodules using a multi-detector row CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten subjects with asthma or chronic bronchitis who had one or more lung nodules were included. For each subject, two sets of CT images were obtained at inspiration and at expiration. A total of 33 nodules (23 nodules > or =3 mm) were identified and their volume measured using a semiautomatic volume measurement program. Differences between nodule volume on inspiration and expiration were compared using the paired t-test. Percent differences, between on inspiration and expiration, in nodule attenuation, total lung volume, whole lung attenuation, and regional lung attenuation, were computed and compared with percent difference in nodule volume determined by linear correlation analysis. RESULTS: The difference in nodule volume observed between inspiration and expiration was significant (p or =3 mm. The volume of nodules was measured to be larger on expiration CT than on inspiration CT (28 out of 33 nodules; 19 out of 23 nodules > or =3 mm). A statistically significant correlation was found between the percent difference of lung nodule volume and lung volume or regional lung attenuation (p or =3 mm. CONCLUSION: Volumetric measurements of pulmonary nodules were significantly affected by changes in lung volume. The variability in this respiration-related measurement should be considered to determine whether growth has occurred in a lung nodule.Supported by in part NIH NHLBI, RO1 HL
