    Plurisubharmonic polynomials and bumping

    We wish to study the problem of bumping outwards a pseudoconvex, finite-type domain \Omega\subset C^n in such a way that pseudoconvexity is preserved and such that the lowest possible orders of contact of the bumped domain with bdy(\Omega), at the site of the bumping, are explicitly realised. Generally, when \Omega\subset C^n, n\geq 3, the known methods lead to bumpings with high orders of contact -- which are not explicitly known either -- at the site of the bumping. Precise orders are known for h-extendible/semiregular domains. This paper is motivated by certain families of non-semiregular domains in C^3. These families are identified by the behaviour of the least-weight plurisubharmonic polynomial in the Catlin normal form. Accordingly, we study how to perturb certain homogeneous plurisubharmonic polynomials without destroying plurisubharmonicity.Comment: 24 pages; corrected typos, fixed errors in Lemma 3.3; accepted for publication in Math.

    We prove that a pseudoholomorphic diffeomorphism between two almost complex manifolds with boundaries satisfying some pseudoconvexity type condition cannot map a pseudoholomorphic disc in the boundary to a single point. This can be viewed as an almost complex analogue of a well-known theorem of J. E. Fornaess

    Linguistische Modellierung zur Erkennung Anatomischer Objekte

    Eine neue Methode wird vorgestellt, die es erlaubt unscharfes Vorwissen uber Objektkonturen in ein Modell Aktiver Konturen ("Snakes") zu integrieren. Das neue Konzept der Fuzzy Snakes wurde entwickelt, um die Eigenschaften einer Objektkontur in intuitiver Weise beschreiben zu konnen. Zu diesen Eigenschaften zahlen neben der durch das bildgebende Verfahren bestimmten Erscheinung eines Objektes im Bild auch Formmerkmale. Dies wird erreicht, indem unscharfe Energiefunktionen eingefuhrt werden, die zusammen mit einer linguistischen Regelbasis jeden Abschnitt einer Fuzzy Snake beschreiben. Weiterhin kann die ungefahre Lange jedes Abschnittes angegeben werden, was sowohl die Segmentation verbessert, als auch die Komplexitat des Algorithmus verringert. Die abschnittsweise linguistische Beschreibung von Konturen ist besonders zur Erkennung starrer, aber auch verformbarer, anatomischer Objekte geeignet. Der Beitrag beschreibt ein Beispiel dafur, wie Fuzzy Snakes genutzt werden konnen, um Konturen anatomischer Objekte wie Handgelenksknochen in MRT- bzw. Rontgenbildfolgen detektieren zu konnen

    Using Machine-Learning to Optimize phase contrast in a Low-Cost Cellphone Microscope

    Cellphones equipped with high-quality cameras and powerful CPUs as well as GPUs are widespread. This opens new prospects to use such existing computational and imaging resources to perform medical diagnosis in developing countries at a very low cost. Many relevant samples, like biological cells or waterborn parasites, are almost fully transparent. As they do not exhibit absorption, but alter the light's phase only, they are almost invisible in brightfield microscopy. Expensive equipment and procedures for microscopic contrasting or sample staining often are not available. By applying machine-learning techniques, such as a convolutional neural network (CNN), it is possible to learn a relationship between samples to be examined and its optimal light source shapes, in order to increase e.g. phase contrast, from a given dataset to enable real-time applications. For the experimental setup, we developed a 3D-printed smartphone microscope for less than 100 \$ using off-the-shelf components only such as a low-cost video projector. The fully automated system assures true Koehler illumination with an LCD as the condenser aperture and a reversed smartphone lens as the microscope objective. We show that the effect of a varied light source shape, using the pre-trained CNN, does not only improve the phase contrast, but also the impression of an improvement in optical resolution without adding any special optics, as demonstrated by measurements
