Top EW couplings at Linear Colliders
In this talk, we present the latest study of e+eâ â tÂŻt, based on a detailed simulation of the ILD detector concept, which assumes a centre-of-mass energy of âs = 500 GeV and a luminosity of L = 500fbâ1, equality shared between the incoming beam polarisations of P eâ,e+ = (±0.8,â0.3). The study comprises the cross sections, the forward-backward asymmetry and the slope of the helicity angle asymmetry. The vector and axial vector couplings are separately determined for the photon and the Z component. The tensorial CP-conserving coupling can be also extracted by assuming the other couplings to be the SM values. We show that the sensitivity to new physics would be dramatically improved with respect to what is expected from LHC for electroweak couplings
A precise characterisation of the top quark electro-weak vertices at the ILC
Top quark production in the process at a future linear
electron positron collider with polarised beams is a powerful tool to determine
indirectly the scale of new physics. The presented study, based on a detailed
simulation of the ILD detector concept, assumes a centre-of-mass energy of
GeV and a luminosity of
equally shared between the incoming beam polarisations of . Events are selected in which the top pair
decays semi-leptonically and the cross sections and the forward-backward
asymmetries are determined. Based on these results, the vector, axial vector
and tensorial conserving couplings are extracted separately for the photon
and the component. With the expected precision, a large number of models
in which the top quark acts as a messenger to new physics can be distinguished
with many standard deviations. This will dramatically improve expectations from
e.g. the LHC for electro-weak couplings of the top quark.Comment: This work is an update of arXiv:1307.8102, minor changes w.r.t. v1

Performance of the first prototype of the CALICE scintillator strip electromagnetic calorimeter
A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter
was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with
planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a
positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's
performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy
measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development
of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This
technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming
at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques
Pion and proton showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter
Showers produced by positive hadrons in the highly granular CALICE
scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter were studied. The experimental
data were collected at CERN and FNAL for single particles with initial momenta
from 10 to 80 GeV/c. The calorimeter response and resolution and spatial
characteristics of shower development for proton- and pion-induced showers for
test beam data and simulations using Geant4 version 9.6 are compared.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, JINST style, changes in the author list, typos

Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Boson Production at HERA
A search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons H^{\pm \pm}
in ep collisions is presented. The signal is searched for via the Higgs decays
into a high mass pair of same charge leptons, one of them being an electron.
The analysis uses up to 118 pb^{-1} of ep data collected by the H1 experiment
at HERA. No evidence for doubly-charged Higgs production is observed and mass
dependent upper limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings h_{el} of the Higgs
boson to an electron-lepton pair. Assuming that the doubly-charged Higgs only
decays into an electron and a muon via a coupling of electromagnetic strength
h_{e \mu} = \sqrt{4 \pi \alpha_{em}} = 0.3, a lower limit of 141 GeV on the
H^{\pm\pm} mass is obtained at the 95% confidence level. For a doubly-charged
Higgs decaying only into an electron and a tau and a coupling h_{e\tau} = 0.3,
masses below 112 GeV are ruled out.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
The Time Structure of Hadronic Showers in highly granular Calorimeters with Tungsten and Steel Absorbers
The intrinsic time structure of hadronic showers influences the timing
capability and the required integration time of hadronic calorimeters in
particle physics experiments, and depends on the active medium and on the
absorber of the calorimeter. With the CALICE T3B experiment, a setup of 15
small plastic scintillator tiles read out with Silicon Photomultipliers, the
time structure of showers is measured on a statistical basis with high spatial
and temporal resolution in sampling calorimeters with tungsten and steel
absorbers. The results are compared to GEANT4 (version 9.4 patch 03)
simulations with different hadronic physics models. These comparisons
demonstrate the importance of using high precision treatment of low-energy
neutrons for tungsten absorbers, while an overall good agreement between data
and simulations for all considered models is observed for steel.Comment: 24 pages including author list, 9 figures, published in JINS
Modelling semantic transparency
We present models of semantic transparency in which the perceived trans- parency of English nounânoun compounds, and of their constituent words, is pre- dicted on the basis of the expectedness of their semantic structure. We show that such compounds are perceived as more transparent when the first noun is more frequent, hence more expected, in the language generally; when the compound semantic rela- tion is more frequent, hence more expected, in association with the first noun; and when the second noun is more productive, hence more expected, as the second ele- ment of a nounânoun compound. Taken together, our models of compound and con- stituent transparency lead us to two conclusions. Firstly, although compound trans- parency is a function of the transparencies of the constituents, the two constituents differ in the nature of their contribution. Secondly, since all the significant predictors in our models of compound transparency are also known predictors of processing speed, perceived transparency may itself be a reflex of ease of processing
Testing Hadronic Interaction Models using a Highly Granular Silicon-Tungsten Calorimeter
A detailed study of hadronic interactions is presented using data recorded
with the highly granular CALICE silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter.
Approximately 350,000 selected negatively charged pion events at energies
between 2 and 10 GeV have been studied. The predictions of several physics
models available within the Geant4 simulation tool kit are compared to this
data. A reasonable overall description of the data is observed; the Monte Carlo
predictions are within 20% of the data, and for many observables much closer.
The largest quantitative discrepancies are found in the longitudinal and
transverse distributions of reconstructed energy.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in NIM
Analogical cognition: an insight into word meaning
Analogical cognition, extensively researched by Dedre Gentner and her colleagues over the past thirty five years, has been described as the core of human cognition, and it characterizes our use of many words. This research provides significant insight into the nature of word meaning, but it has been ignored by linguists and philosophers of language. I discuss some of the implications of the research for our account of word meaning. In particular, I argue that the research points to, and helps account for, a key explanatory role that linguistic meaning must play. The research also shows how words contribute to thought as opposed to merely being a means of conveying thought
