The faint 2011 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1543-564
We report on a spectral-timing analysis of the black hole X-ray binary
candidate MAXI J1543- 564 during its 2011 outburst. All 99 pointed observations
of this outburst obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) were
included in our study. We computed the fundamental diagrams commonly used to
study black hole transients, and fitted power density and energy spectra to
study the spectral and timing parameters along the outburst. The determination
of timing parameters and hence of exact transitions between different states
was hampered by the rather low count rate at which his outburst was observed.
We detected two periods of exponential decay, one after the source was
brightest, which was interrupted by several flares, and another one during the
high/soft state. The detection of these decays allowed us to obtain an estimate
for the source distance of at least 8.5 kpc. This leaves two possible
explanations for the observed low count rate; either the source has a distance
similar to that of other black hole X-ray binary candidates and it is
intrinsically faint, or it has a similar luminosity, but is located more than
12 kpc away from us. Furthermore, in the high/soft state the source spectrum

The black hole candidate MAXI J1659-152: spectral and timing analysis during its 2010 outburst
We present a comprehensive spectral-timing study of the black hole candidate
MAXI J1659-152 during its 2010 outburst. We analysed 65 RXTE observations taken
along this period and computed the fundamental diagrams commonly used to study
black hole transients. We fitted power density and energy spectra and studied
the evolution of the spectral and timing parameters along the outburst. We
discuss the evolution of the variability observed at different energy bands on
the basis of the relative contribution of the disc and hard components to the
energy spectrum of the source. We conclude that hard emission accounts for the
observed fast variability, it being strongly quenched when type-B oscillations
are observed. We find that both disc and hard emission are responsible for
local count-rate peaks until the system reaches the soft state. From that
point, the peaks are only observed in the hard component, whereas the thermal
component drops monotonically probably following the accretion rate decrease.
We have also computed time-lags between soft and hard X-ray variability
confirming that lags are larger during the hard-to-soft transition than during

An overview of jets and outflows in stellar mass black holes
In this book chapter, we will briefly review the current empirical
understanding of the relation between accretion state and and outflows in
accreting stellar mass black holes. The focus will be on the empirical
connections between X-ray states and relativistic (`radio') jets, although we
are now also able to draw accretion disc winds into the picture in a systematic
way. We will furthermore consider the latest attempts to measure/order jet
power, and to compare it to other (potentially) measurable quantities, most

The accretion-ejection coupling in the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1836-194
We present the results of our quasi-simultaneous radio, submm, infrared, optical and X-ray study of the Galactic black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1836-194 during its 2011 outburst. We consider the full multiwavelength spectral evolution of the outburst, investigating whether the evolution of the jet spectral break (the transition between optically thick and optically thin synchrotron emission) is caused by any specific properties of the accretion flow. Our observations show that the break does not scale with the X-ray luminosity or with the inner radius of the accretion disc, and is instead likely to be set by much more complex processes. We find that the radius of the acceleration zone at the base of the jet decreases from ˜106 gravitational radii during the hard intermediate state to ˜103 gravitational radii as the outburst fades (assuming a black hole mass of 8 M?), demonstrating that the electrons are accelerated on much larger scales than the radius of the inner accretion disc and that the jet properties change significantly during outburst. From our broad-band modelling and high-resolution optical spectra, we argue that early in the outburst, the high-energy synchrotron cooling break was located in the optical band, between ˜3.2 × 10^14 and 4.5 × 10^14 Hz. We calculate that the jet has a total radiative power of ˜3.1 × 10^36 erg s-1, which is ˜6 per cent of the bolometric radiative luminosity at this time. We discuss how this cooling break may evolve during the outburst, and how that evolution dictates the total jet radiative power. Assuming the source is a stellar mass black hole with canonical state transitions, from the measured flux and peak temperature of the disc component we constrain the source distance to be 4-10 kpc
30 days wild: development and evaluation of a large-scale nature engagement campaign to improve well-being
There is a need to increase people’s engagement with and connection to nature, both for human well-being and the conservation of nature itself. In order to suggest ways for people to engage with nature and create a wider social context to normalise nature engagement, The Wildlife Trusts developed a mass engagement campaign, 30 Days Wild. The campaign asked people to engage with nature every day for a month. 12,400 people signed up for 30 Days Wild via an online sign-up with an estimated 18,500 taking part overall, resulting in an estimated 300,000 engagements with nature by participants. Samples of those taking part were found to have sustained increases in happiness, health, connection to nature and pro-nature behaviours. With the improvement in health being predicted by the improvement in happiness, this relationship was mediated by the change in connection to nature
Using a New Odour-Baited Device to Explore Options for Luring and Killing Outdoor-Biting Malaria Vectors: A Report on Design and Field Evaluation of the Mosquito Landing Box.
Mosquitoes that bite people outdoors can sustain malaria transmission even where effective indoor interventions such as bednets or indoor residual spraying are already widely used. Outdoor tools may therefore complement current indoor measures and improve control. We developed and evaluated a prototype mosquito control device, the 'Mosquito Landing Box' (MLB), which is baited with human odours and treated with mosquitocidal agents. The findings are used to explore technical options and challenges relevant to luring and killing outdoor-biting malaria vectors in endemic settings. Field experiments were conducted in Tanzania to assess if wild host-seeking mosquitoes 1) visited the MLBs, 2) stayed long or left shortly after arrival at the device, 3) visited the devices at times when humans were also outdoors, and 4) could be killed by contaminants applied on the devices. Odours suctioned from volunteer-occupied tents were also evaluated as a potential low-cost bait, by comparing baited and unbaited MLBs. There were significantly more Anopheles arabiensis, An. funestus, Culex and Mansonia mosquitoes visiting baited MLB than unbaited controls (P<=0.028). Increasing sampling frequency from every 120 min to 60 and 30 min led to an increase in vector catches of up to 3.6 fold (P<=0.002), indicating that many mosquitoes visited the device but left shortly afterwards. Outdoor host-seeking activity of malaria vectors peaked between 7:30 and 10:30pm, and between 4:30 and 6:00am, matching durations when locals were also outdoors. Maximum mortality of mosquitoes visiting MLBs sprayed or painted with formulations of candidate mosquitocidal agent (pirimiphos-methyl) was 51%. Odours from volunteer occupied tents attracted significantly more mosquitoes to MLBs than controls (P<0.001). While odour-baited devices such as the MLBs clearly have potential against outdoor-biting mosquitoes in communities where LLINs are used, candidate contaminants must be those that are effective at ultra-low doses even after short contact periods, since important vector species such as An. arabiensis make only brief visits to such devices. Natural human odours suctioned from occupied dwellings could constitute affordable sources of attractants to supplement odour baits for the devices. The killing agents used should be environmentally safe, long lasting, and have different modes of action (other than pyrethroids as used on LLINs), to curb the risk of physiological insecticide resistance
Social democracy, embeddedness and decommodification: On the conceptual innovations and intellectual affiliations of Karl Polanyi
Of the several debates that revolve around the work of the economic historian and political economist Karl Polanyi, one that continues to exercise minds concerns his analysis of, and political attitudes toward, post-war capitalism and the welfare state. Simplified a little, it is a debate with two sides. To borrow Iván Szelényi's terms, one side constructs a ‘hard’ Karl Polanyi, the other a ‘soft’ one. The former advocated a socialist mixed economy dominated by redistributive mechanisms. He was a radical socialist for whom the market should never be the dominant mechanism of economic coordination. His ‘soft’ alter ego insisted that the market system remain essentially intact but be complemented by redistributive mechanisms. The ‘double movement’ – the central thesis of his ‘Great Transformation’ – acts, in this reading, as a self-correcting mechanism that moderates the excesses of market fundamentalism; its author was positioned within the social-democratic mainstream for which the only realistic desirable goal is a regulated form of capitalism. In terms of textual evidence there is much to be said for both interpretations. In this article I suggest a different approach, one that focuses upon the meaning of Polanyi's concepts in relation to their socio-political and intellectual environment
Helpers and egg investment in the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker: testing the concealed helper effects hypothesis
In cooperatively breeding acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus), helper males have a large positive effect on fledging success in good acorn crop years but only a small positive effect in poor acorn crop years, while helper females exhibit the opposite pattern. Based on these findings, we tested the “concealed helper effects” hypothesis, which proposes that laying females reduce investment in eggs (with respect to their size, number, or quality) in a way that confounds helper effects and results in an absence of a relationship between helpers and breeding success. Results generally failed to support the hypothesis. Mean egg size was positively related to temperatures during the 10 days prior to egg-laying and negatively related to the food supply as indexed by the prior fall’s acorn crop, but there were no significant differences vis-à-vis helpers except for interactions with the acorn crop that only partly corresponded to those predicted. With respect to clutch size, females laid larger clutches when assisted by female helpers, opposite the pattern predicted. Although our results suggest that egg size is adjusted to particular ecological circumstances, we conclude that neither egg nor clutch size is adjusted in a way that confounds the apparent effects of helpers, as proposed by the concealed helper effects hypothesis
Protective Efficacy of Menthol Propylene Glycol Carbonate Compared to N, N-diethyl-Methylbenzamide Against Mosquito Bites in Northern Tanzania.
The reduction of malaria parasite transmission by preventing human-vector contact is critical in lowering disease transmission and its outcomes. This underscores the need for effective and long lasting arthropod/insect repellents. Despite the reduction in malaria transmission and outcomes in Tanzania, personal protection against mosquito bites is still not well investigated. This study sought to determine the efficacy of menthol propylene glycol carbonate (MR08), Ocimum suave as compared to the gold standard repellent N, N-diethyl-methylbenzamide (DEET), either as a single dose or in combination (blend), both in the laboratory and in the field against Anopheles gambiae s.l and Culex quinquefasciatus. In the laboratory evaluations, repellents were applied on one arm while the other arm of the same individual was treated with a base cream. Each arm was separately exposed in cages with unfed female mosquitoes. Repellents were evaluated either as a single dose or as a blend. Efficacy of each repellent was determined by the number of mosquitoes that landed and fed on treated arms as compared to the control or among them. In the field, evaluations were performed by human landing catches at hourly intervals from 18:00 hr to 01:00 hr. A total of 2,442 mosquitoes were collected during field evaluations, of which 2,376 (97.30%) were An. gambiae s.l while 66 (2.70%) were Cx. quinquefaciatus. MR08 and DEET had comparatively similar protective efficacy ranging from 92% to 100 for both single compound and blends. These findings indicate that MR08 has a similar protective efficacy as DEET for personal protection outside bed nets when used singly and in blends. Because of the personal protection provided by MR08, DEET and blends as topical applicants in laboratory and field situations, these findings suggest that, these repellents could be used efficiently in the community to complement existing tools. Overall, Cx. quinquefasciatus were significantly prevented from blood feeding compared to An. gambiae s.l. The incorporation of these topical repellents for protection against insect bites can be of additional value in the absence or presence of IRS and ITNs coverage. However, a combination of both the physical (bed nets) and the repellent should be used in an integrated manner for maximum protection, especially before going to bed.
