Nuevas tecnologías como estrategia terapéutica complementaria para el Trastorno de Juego

    Get PDF

“This Brings you to Life” The Impact of Friendship on Health and Well-being in Old Age: the Case of La Verneda Learning Community

Friendship has been studied along centuries, since ancient times to present-day, as the basis of the social cornerstone, present at all stages of the lifespan and belonging to the world of truthful sentiments. Benefits of friendship on health have been demonstrated. Less is known about the role of friendship on seniors. The aim of this case study has been to show how the end friendship developed in an adults’ school operating for more than 40 years in Barcelona is having a positive impact on the well-being and health of their participants. Through the communicative discussion group, we have deepened in the trajectories of some of the school participants. The results show how participation in the school and the dialogic gatherings have contributed to the emergence of a non-instrumental friendship feeling and to consider an impact on the perceived general wellness and health and an improvement of their life quality. It is discussed how this research provides more elements to the existing literature. More research on how other communitarian environments have similar effects on this population, or on the impact of these dialogical spaces in the development of end friendships in other stages of the life cycle would be of interest

Ghosts, Words, Memories and Stories in Katherine Anne Porter’s “Old Mortality” and Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street

[Abstract] Katherine Anne Porter was born in 1890 and she published “Old Mortality” in 1937; she was an acclaimed writer of short stories when Sandra Cisneros was born in 1954, and she had been dead for more than ten years when the latter first published The House on Mango Street. In spite of the chronological distance that separates both writers, and in spite of the different life experiences which determined their development, their works show the existence of certain interests in common. In this paper I explore some of these aspects of their fiction by focusing on Porter’s “Old Mortality” and Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street. Both works deal with the childhood and adolescence of two especially sensitive young girls, Miranda and Esperanza, who at the end of their stories still dream of a future of freedom and independence. But Miranda’s and Esperanza’s hopeful dreams are very different: while Miranda feels that she needs to break with her family and their stories about the past in order to be independent and “know the truth about what happens to [her] ”, Esperanza seems to have gone a step further, and she knows that her dream of a future life away from Mango Street will eventually bring her back to this place and its people. Thus, Esperanza shows a more complete understanding of her existence: she knows that her future dream will require her acknowledgement of the past. This means that she is ready to establish the dialogue between memory and the self which was essential in Porter’s fiction and which Miranda fails to achieve at the end of “Old Mortality.” In this paper I suggest that at least one of the reasons for the difference between these two characters’ final reactions can be found in the different role of language, words and stories in both texts

Outside the Magic Circle of White Male Supremacy in the Jim Crow South: Virginia Foster Durr’s Memoirs

Virginia Foster Durr was born in 1903 in Birmingham, Alabama in a former planter class family, and in spite of the gradual decline in the family fortune, she was brought up as a traditional southern belle, utterly subjected to the demands of the ideology of white male supremacy that ruled the Jim Crow South. Thus, she soon learnt that in the South a black woman could not be a lady, and that as a young southern woman she was desperately in need of a husband. It was not until she had fulfilled this duty that she began to open her eyes to the reality of poverty, injustice, discrimination, sexism and racism ensuing from the set of rules she had so easily embraced until then. In Outside the Magic Circle, Durr describes the process that made her aware of the gender discrimination implicit in the patriarchal southern ideology, and how this realization eventually led her to abhor racial segregation and the ideology of white male supremacy. As a consequence, in her memoirs she presents herself as a rebel facing the social ostracism resulting from her determination to fight against gender and racial discrimination in the Jim Crow South. This article delves into Durr’s composed textual self as a rebel, and suggests the existence of a crack in it, rooted in her inability to discern the real effects of white male supremacy on the domestic realm and in her subsequent blindness to the reality behind the mammy stereotype

Background and approach to a definition of smart buildings

    Get PDF
There is no possibility of finding a single reference about domotics in the first half of the 20th century. The best known authors and those who have documented this discipline, set its origin in the 1970’s, when the x-10 technology began to be used, but it was not until 1988 when Larousse Encyclopedia decided to include the definition of "Smart Building". Furthermore, even nowadays, there is not a single definition widely accepted, and for that reason, many other expressions, namely "Intelligent Buildings" "Domotics" "Digital Home" or "Home Automation" have appeared to describe the automated buildings and homes. The lack of a clear definition for "Smart Buildings" causes difficulty not only in the development of a common international framework to develop research in this field, but it also causes insecurity in the potential user of these buildings. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to propose a definition of the expression “Smart Buildings” that satisfactorily describes the meaning of this discipline. To achieve this aim, a thorough review of the origin of the term itself and the historical background before the emergence of the phenomenon of domotics was conducted, followed by a critical discussion of existing definitions of the term "Smart Buildings" and other similar terms. The extent of each definition has been analyzed, inaccuracies have been discarded and commonalities have been compared. Throughout the discussion, definitions that bring the term "Smart Buildings" near to disciplines such as computer science, robotics and also telecommunications have been found

In the classical section of the Don Braulio Creek at the Villicum Range, Eastern Precordillera of San Juan Province, crops out the siliciclastic Don Braulio Formation of Hirnantian age. Fragments of bryozoan colonies, few poorly preserved sponge spicules and a crinoidal plate, were recovered from these shelf sedi-ments. The bryozoan colonies remains are characterized by its erect growth habit, its small diameter, and for showing clear longitudinal striations. These fragments have a poor preservation, but they have been compared with the genus Nematopora belonging to the Arthrostylidae family (Rhobdomesina suborder, Cryptostomata order), that had numerous representatives during the Ordovician. Very scarce and highly fragmented sponge spicules are classifed as hexactins. These microfossils have been recovered in the post-glacial deposits from the Don Braulio section at the Villicum range.Fil: Jiménez Sánchez, Andrea. Background and Study Aim: Despite recognised benefits of regular physical activity for health, the percentage of individuals linking with a physical activity practice sufficient to confer health benefits is low. The aim of current work is knowledge about effects of an extension of the motivation trans-contextual model application, specifically in the prediction of life satisfaction by veteran judo athletes. Material and Methods: It was used a sample of 99 Portuguese veteran judo athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 76 years (M = 42.61 ±9.75), where through questionnaires were measured: basic psychological needs satisfaction, motivation, planned behaviour variables and life satisfaction. Results: The structural equations model showed that autonomy perception positively and significantly predicts autonomous motivation. In its turn it positively and significantly predicts intentions. Conclusions: Life satisfaction is positively and significantly predicted by intentions. Results authorise to emphasise the importance of fostering autonomy, since this will favour autonomous motivation, promoting a higher behavioural control over the practitioners’ intentions, thus generating a higher life satisfaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

En este contexto, el Ministerio de Información y Turismo diseña campañas de educación cívica como “Mantenga Limpia España” en donde se busca formar a la sociedad española en unos valores y prácticas sociales coherentes a la modernidad vinculada con el desarrollismoThe Stabilization Plan of 1956 means the beginning of a new historical journey on Franco’s regime, which has been conceived under the title of desarrollismo and which lasted from the early sixties to the seventies. It is at this time, when consumer society and the rise of a new middle class was born, where the institutional advertising plays an important role in the diffusion of the new values and norms of consumption (through television advertising). In this context, the Ministerio de Información y Turismo designs civic education campaigns as “Mantenga Limpia España” where it tries to educate citizens about values and social practices consistent with the modernity associated with the desarrollismoGraduado o Graduada en Sociología Aplicada por la Universidad Pública de NavarraSoziologia Aplikatuan Graduatua Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
