Solving ‘the Uniform Issue’: Gender and Professional Identity in the Swedish Military

    Get PDF
This article contributes empirical knowledge about the shifting ways in which the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) has articulated and addressed ‘the uniform issue’, that is, matters concerning servicewomen’s access to adequate uniforms and other equipment, since the 1980s. Drawing on analytical tools employed within post-structural policy analysis, we demonstrate how ‘the uniform issue’ has gone from being articulated as a problem for servicewomen, and to be solved by servicewomen, to a problem for the SAF in its pursuit to become an attractive employer and a legitimate public authority. By shedding light on how ‘the uniform issue’ has been problematized in shifting ways since Swedish women first were allowed to serve in all military positions, this article also contributes important insights into broader scholarly debates about workplace discrimination, gender equality, and gendered occupational identities in military work

Park management's adaptation for different age groups : about social multifunction in an urban park

In urban landscapes where densification causes loss of green space there is a need for parks which hold a high quality and that fit different user groups. Green space management is important for the development of high quality in existing green space. For parks to be inclusive for all it is important to secure that use is possible for all different needs and wants. One possibility for management to secure this can be to develop parks into multifunction for different user groups. Walking interviews were made in a park in central Landskrona, Sweden, with the three user groups children, adolescents and elderly and also with the head park manager of the city. Different uses and experiences were explored in the three user groups and views on how to fit and include different user groups were investigated in the interview with the manager. Results present different affordances of parks, as well as the views on the park management and maintenance in the three age groups. The manager’s views of development for user-friendliness, multifunction and experiences of user participation is also presented. Similarities and differences of park use, how parks are experienced and what needs and wants different age groups hold is shown. Important aspects for the different groups was an appreciation to liveliness, contact with nature, needs for social places for the own age group, clean and safe parks and a variety of different elements, atmospheres and activities in the park. Social multifunction can be developed in both 'programmed' and 'non-programmed' places but functions that can interfere with each other need to be considered. The age groups show different motivation to participate in management but all seemed to appreciate the possibility to participate. Various suggestions and advises are given to park managers on how parks can be developed to suit different age groups and how social multifunction can be developed to create inclusive parks for different age groups

Place development through dance : alternative methods within landscape architecture

In the area of landscaping, we now use digital equipment more and more frequently instead of the human body. When we move less within the work space we risk to loose our connection and understanding with that specific environment. This paper examines examples of how dance can contribute with understanding and knowledge of the outdoor environments that a garden engineer works with. Through 1) a case study of choreographer Anna Asplinds dance performance 'Dancewalks', 2) a literature study of the couple Halprin's (choreographer Anna Halprin and landscape architect Lawrence Halprin) cooperation, and 3) a case study of landscape architect and professor Carola Wingrens work with dance when teaching landscape architect students, this paper emphasises the opportunity to utilize dance when developing landscaping designs for outdoor public spaces. When the entire body and all of the senses are involved through dance, intimate understanding of the space, movements within that space and forces in and surrounding that space can be achieved. Through dance methods that breaches the normal movement patterns in public places, we can discover territories and the social norms in that space. Citizen participation through dance can provide a collective base to start discussions from. By focusing on movements in design projects one can draw attention to realities of life and the complexity of our outdoor environments. The essay highlights the benefits of making use of dance and gives examples of how such work can proceed. The essay lacks its own empirical investigation of the opportunities that are presented and further research is needed in this field

The role of green spaces and their management in a child-friendly urban village

    Get PDF
Environmental child-friendliness is affected by how built environments and green spaces are planned and designed, but also by their ongoing management, including both development and maintenance. This study examined children’s perspectives on their local environments with focus on green spaces and their management in an urban village. Five groups totalling 16 children aged 10–11 were interviewed through child-led walks. Both the qualities of the village as a whole and of specific places within it added to the child-friendliness of the local environment. The children showed planned and managed spaces including playgrounds and parks, and unmanaged places such as abandoned gardens. They found many qualities in multifunctional planned places with a varied, rich content. In unmanaged areas the lack of management was seen as positive for exploration, play possibilities and for the place to be children’s own. The findings suggest that children’s perspectives can play an important role not only in planning and design, but also in the ongoing process of landscape management, including the provision of more variation in local green spaces

As part of a current revision of the Australasian and Pacific orb-weaving spider fauna (family Araneidae Clerck, 1757), a number new combinations are proposed in the genera Acroaspis Karsch, 1878 (3 species), Carepalxis L. Koch, 1872 (1 species), Cyclosa Menge, 1866 (5 species), and Neoscona Simon, 1864 (7 species): Acroaspis lancearia (Keyserling, 1887), comb. n., A. mamillana (Keyserling, 1887), comb. n., A. scutifer (Keyserling, 1886), comb. n., Carepalxis furcifera (Keyserling, 1886), comb. n.; Cyclosa anatipes (Keyserling, 1887), comb. n.; Cyclosa apoblepta (Rainbow, 1916), comb. n.; Cyclosa argentaria (Rainbow, 1916), comb. n.; Cyclosa lichensis (Rainbow, 1916), comb. n.; Cyclosa poweri (Rainbow, 1916), comb. n.; Neoscona decolor (L. Koch, 1871), comb. n.; Neoscona enucleata (Karsch, 1879), comb. n.; Neoscona flavopunctata (L. Koch, 1871), comb. n.; Neoscona floriata (Hogg, 1914), comb. n.; Neoscona granti (Hogg, 1914), comb. n.; Neoscona inusta (L. Koch, 1871), comb. n.; and Neoscona notanda (Rainbow, 1912), comb. n. The following two Australian species, currently placed in Araneus, are not Araneidae but comb-footed spiders (family Theridiidae Sundevall, 1833): Anelosimus dianiphus (Rainbow, 1916), comb. n. and Theridion xanthostichus (Rainbow, 1916), stat. and comb. n. The following six species are considered numina dubia as their type material is immature or otherwise unidentifiable (e.g. partly destroyed): Araneus acachmenus Rainbow, 1916; Araneus agastus Rainbow, 1916; Araneus exsertus Rainbow, 1904; Araneus suavis Rainbow, 1899; Carepalxis coronata (Rainbow, 1896); and Heurodes turritus Keyserling, 1886. Heurodes fratellus (Chamberlin, 1924) is considered a nomen dubium and Heurodes porcula (Simon, 1877) is returned to Eriovixia Archer, 1951, Eriovixia porcula (Simon, 1877). Type material of predominantly Australian species described by E. v. Keyserling (1 species), W. J. Rainbow (10 species), A. T. Urquhart (8 species), and C. A. Walckenaer (2 species) is here considered destroyed or otherwise lost. As it is impossible to identify these species from their original descriptions and considering the known spider fauna from their respective type localities, they are all considered numina dubia: Anepsia crinita Rainbow, 1893; Epeira diabrosis (Walckenaer, 1841); Epeira diversicolor Rainbow, 1893; Epeira ficta Rainbow, 1896; Epeira hamiltoni Rainbow, 1893; Epeira lacrymosa (Walckenaer, 1841); Epeira leai Rainbow, 1894; Epeira mortoni Urquhart, 1891; Epeira notacephala Urquhart, 1891; Epeira obscurta Urquhart, 1893; Epeira phalerata Urquhart, 1893; Epeira pronuba Rainbow, 1894; Epeira rara Keyserling, 1887; Epeira singulara Urquhart, 1891; Epeira sub-flavida Urquhart, 1893; Epeira similaris Rainbow, 1896 (= Araneus urquharti Roewer, 1942 replacement name); Epeira ventriosa Urquhart, 1891; and Epeira viridula Urquhart, 1891
