    Effet de la maladie des taches angulaires sur le rendement des varietes de haricot commun (Phaseolus vulgaris l.) a Foumbot dans L’ouest Cameroun

    Cette étude a été menée à l’IRAD de Foumbot dans le but d’examiner l’effet de la maladie des taches angulaires (MTA) sur le rendement des variétés améliorées de haricot commun. Six variétés améliorées de haricot ont été semées dans un dispositif complètement randomisé avec trois répétions. Les données collectées sur l’incidence et la sévérité de la maladie, ainsi que le rendement de chaque variété ont été soumises à une Analyse des Variances. Les résultats montrent que l’incidence et la sévérité de la maladie ainsi que le rendement ont été significativement différents (P d ≤ 0,05) entre les variétés. L’incidence de la maladie a été significativement plus élevée chez les variétés naines dans la proportion de 100 %, que chez les variétés grimpantes dans la proportion 85 % au 50e jour après semis. La maladie a été plus sévère chez les variétés naines (39 %) que chez les variétés grimpantes (20 %). Les variétés grimpantes ont été les plus productrices. L’étude montre que la MTA du haricot commun réduit significativement le rendement en grains de cette culture à Foumbot et la variété grimpante NUV-6 se présente comme un bon candidat en vue de la sélection pour la résistance contre cette maladie.Mots clés : Maladie des taches angulaires, haricot, variété, rendement.English AbstractEffect of angular leaf spot disease on the yield of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris l.) varieties at Foumbot in Western CameroonThis study was conducted at IRAD of Foumbot to examine the effect of Angular Leaf Spot (ALS) disease on the performance of improved varieties of common bean. Indeed, six improved bean varieties were sown in a completely randomized design with three replications. The data collected on the incidence and severity of the disease, as well as the yield of each variety were subjected to Analysis of Variances. The results show that the incidence and severity of the disease, as well as the yield were ignificantly different (P d ≤ 0.05) between the varieties with respect to days after sowing (DAS). From 50 days after sowing (DAS), disease incidence was higher for bush varieties in proportion of 100 % than climbing varieties in proportion of 85 %. The disease was more severe on the bush varieties than the climbing varieties respectively in proportions of 39 % and 20 %. Climbing varieties were the most productive compared to bush varieties. The study shows that the ALS disease of common bean significantly reduce the yield of both the climbing and bush varieties in Foumbot. But in terms of disease, climbing variety NUV-6 proved best as it showed some resistance to ALS and had quality seeds.Key words : Angular leaf spot disease, bean, variety, yiel

    Impact of fungicide application on taro leaf blight disease in three regions of Cameroon

    Open Access JournalThe study was conducted in the research field sites of the Institute of Agricultural Research (IRAD), Bambui, North West Region, (IRAD), Ekona South West Region and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Nkolbisson, Yaoundé, Center Region of Cameroon. Four cultivars of taro (Dark green petiole with small leaves (L1), Red petiole with small leaves (L2), Light green petiole with large leaves (L3) and Light green petiole with small leaves(L4)) were planted in four seasons, for two years, in the months of March and July 2015, March and July 2016 in all the research farms. Ninety corms of the each cultivar were treated before planting with fungiforce at 0.33% concentration while others were not treated. Fungiforce is a contact and systemic fungicide containing high levels of copper oxide (600 grams) and mild levels of metalaxyl (120 grams), various concentrations of 0.4%, 0.33%, 0.27%, at the onset of the first symptom of leaf blight on the leaves using knapsack sprayer of 15 litres at two weeks interval, while the control experiment consisted of unsprayed taro leaves. Data for the disease incidence of taro leaf blight was recorded from the onset of disease in fields and continued at two weeks interval for 6 weeks. The results of planting taro in four seasons in three experimental field sites revealed that there was a decrease in disease incidence in fields sprayed with fungiforce than in the control field. Plots sprayed with fungicide at different concentrations showed no variation on the 4 cultivars in the different field sites. The disease incidence ranged from 10% to 100% in the 4 seasons, at the three experimental field sites. The variation in disease incidence in the three planting sites is an indication of possible genotypes by environment (GXE) interaction that may have significant influence on the taro leaf blight resistance potential

    Phytosanitary situation of maize streak virus in the main maize production zones of Cameroon

    Open Access Article; Published online: 09 Apr 2021Maize streak caused by the Maize streak virus (MSV, genus Mastrevirus) is transmitted by Cicadulina spp., and is responsible for considerable maize yield losses in all maize production zones in Africa, including Cameroon. A survey was conducted in 3 agro-ecological zones (AEZ) of Cameroon (Sudano-Sahelian: zone I, Western Highlands: zone III and Bimodal Rainforest: zone V) between November 2017 and November 2019 to determine the status of streak disease in maize farms. The incidence and severity were determined in 90 maize fields, 30 fields per AEZ; the effect of lightning on the disease was also assessed using 15 fields under shade and 15 opened fields per AEZ. The highest streak disease incidence (60%) was found in AEZ I, whereas the lowest incidence was 10% in AEZV. The highest disease incidence and severity (80% and 4.5 respectively) were observed in maize fields under shade as compared to open fields (70% and 4.5 respectively). The phylogenetic analysis of MSV sequences from symptomatic plants indicated it as MSV-A strain identical to be previously reported to determine the virus diversity in relation to the other characterization isolates. This information is important for the development of control strategies to limit yield losses due to MSV

    Long-term exposure to residential ambient fine and coarse particulate matter and incident hypertension in post-menopausal women

    Background Long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) has been previously linked with higher risk of cardiovascular events. This association may be mediated, at least partly, by increasing the risk of incident hypertension, a key determinant of cardiovascular risk. However, whether long-term exposure to PM is associated with incident hypertension remains unclear. Methods Using national geostatistical models incorporating geographic covariates and spatial smoothing, we estimated annual average concentrations of residential fine (PM2.5), respirable (PM10), and course (PM10–2.5) fractions of particulate matter among 44,255 post-menopausal women free of hypertension enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) clinical trials. We used time-varying Cox proportional hazards models to evaluate the association between long-term average residential pollutant concentrations and incident hypertension, adjusting for potential confounding by sociodemographic factors, medical history, neighborhood socioeconomic measures, WHI study clinical site, clinical trial, and randomization arm. Results During 298,383 person-years of follow-up, 14,511 participants developed incident hypertension. The adjusted hazard ratios per interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5, PM10, and PM10–2.5 were 1.13 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.17), 1.06 (1.03, 1.10), and 1.01 (95% CI: 0.97, 1.04), respectively. Statistically significant concentration-response relationships were identified for PM2.5 and PM10 fractions. The association between PM2.5 and hypertension was more pronounced among non-white participants and those residing in the Northeastern United States. Conclusions In this cohort of post-menopausal women, ambient fine and respirable particulate matter exposures were associated with higher incidence rates of hypertension. These results suggest that particulate matter may be an important modifiable risk factor for hypertension

    Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA

    Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the γp\gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets.     Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF

    Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps" that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.     Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

    We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let

    Considerations for the Use of Phage Therapy in Clinical Practice

    Increasing antimicrobial resistance and medical device-related infections have led to a renewed interest in phage therapy as an alternative or adjunct to conventional antimicrobials. Expanded access and compassionate use cases have risen exponentially but have varied widely in approach, methodology, and clinical situations in which phage therapy might be considered. Large gaps in knowledge contribute to heterogeneity in approach and lack of consensus in many important clinical areas. The Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG) has convened a panel of experts in phage therapy, clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, and pharmacology, who worked with regulatory experts and a funding agency to identify questions based on a clinical framework and divided them into three themes: potential clinical situations in which phage therapy might be considered, laboratory testing, and pharmacokinetic considerations. Suggestions are provided as answers to a series of questions intended to inform clinicians considering experimental phage therapy for patients in their clinical practices
