Study of Harris Lines at the »Prat de la Riba« Necropolis – Third to Fifth Century AD
Harris lines (HL) are considered a nutritional or pathological stress factor in the study of past populations. This
study attempts to contribute to the knowledge of the causal agents for HL in terms of assessing the health state of the population
of Tarragona in the Roman period. The presence of HL has been analyzed in 614 long bones (214 humeri, 150 femurs
and 250 tibias) from 243 skeletons. No HL have been observed in humeri. The frequencies of HL in femurs are higher
than 27% and in tibias more than 48%. Although no significant differences in the presence of HL is found among age
categories, it seems that the causal agents of these marks acted on individuals from the age of 5, an age from which the
long bones of the lower extremities are more prone to producing HL. The hardened living conditions in the Dark Age of
the Roman period in Spain between the third to fifth centuries A.D. may be the cause of the high prevalence of HL in this
population

Artistic expressions and funerary record during the Early Cardial and Epicardial Neolithic in Catalonia
La contextualitzaciĂł de les manifestacions artĂstiques Ă©s cada cop millor i les manifestacions funerĂ ries sĂłn cada cop mĂ©s nombroses.[eng] This paper reviews two key aspects in the sphere of the beliefs of the Neolithic groups that, during the Taula Rodona de Montserrat, were almost ignored, because the available information was almost non-existent. So the data obtained in recent years has been a major leap forward. Contextualization of the artistic record has improved, and funerary evidence are increasing in numbe
Fire and Bones: Bronze Age III in the North-Eastern Iberian Peninsula
Between the third millennium BP and the fifth century AD, there are numerous necropolises that house urns in the
Iberian Peninsula. One example is the »Pi de la Lliura« (Vidreres, Girona). However, there is a dearth of research concerning
these structures. The »Pi de la Lliura« housed 43 structures, which contained a total of 47 vessels with human
remains. Of these 43 structures, 22 were totally or partially excavated at the laboratory. The evidence from the fragments
indicates cremation at a temperature of 650–700 °C. Part of the cremated corpse was then deposited in an urn. One of the
most unique characteristics of the necropolis is the high frequency of individuals younger than 20 years old. The mortality
of sub-adults is high in any prehistoric necropolis, but it is even higher in a cremation necropolis. »Pi de la Lliura« is
a very small necropolis, where corpses were treated similarly over a short period
Peer reviewe
'To 'seafood' or not to 'seafood'?' An isotopic perspective on dietary preferences at the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the Western Mediterranean
Stable isotope investigations of the Prehistory of the Western Mediterranean have increased exponentially during the last decade. This region has a high number of Mesolithic and Neolithic carbon and nitrogen isotope ratio data available compared with other world areas, resulting from the interest in the 'transition' between hunter-gathering and farming. This type of analysis is important as one of the few tools that give direct information on the poorly understood dietary transition from hunter-gatherer to agro-pastoralist subsistence in the Mediterranean Basin. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis on bulk collagen are especially useful for exploring marine vs. terrestrial protein input and therefore assess marine resource exploitation by these two different lifestyles. Gathering together all isotopic data for these chronologies we show that theWestern Mediterranean underwent a unique/distinct Neolithisation process. These data show a gradual dietary shift in aquatic resource consumption during the transition to farming that contrasts to elsewhere in Europe
1. Revisar tota la informaciĂł existent.
2. Actualitzar les dades.
3. Presentar els nous resultats.Peer reviewe
Toothpicking and periodontal disease in a Neanderthal specimen from Cova ForadĂ site (Valencia, Spain).
We present a Neanderthal maxilla (CF-1) from Cova ForadĂ site (Oliva, Valencia, Spain) with periodontal disease and evidence of attempts to alleviate pain with the use of a toothpick. Two interproximal grooves have been found on the distal surfaces of the upper left Pm(3) and M(1) of CF-1 maxilla. The location, morphology and size of the grooves coincide with other interproximal grooves found on the teeth of other fossil specimens. Heavy dental wear and periodontal disease would have caused the Cova ForadĂ Neanderthal specimen pain and discomfort, which the individual attempted to mitigate using some kind of dental probe
