    France:: Social science education in France – A fragmented educational landscape in transition

    Get PDF
    Purpose: After a short historical presentation, this country report highlights current developments of social science education in France and clarifies its general status in the French school system, giving not only information about the curricula baselines, but also on current reforms, shifts and conflict lines among practitioners and researchers. Design/methodology/approach: This article is based on a synopsis of both official documents and evaluation reports published by the French Ministry of Education and other public organs and scientific data such as empirical case studies. Findings: Social sciences education falls under broad purposes such as educating citizens and preparing the future workforce. History, geography and civics are more established and taught to more students than other more recent subjects like Sciences économiques et sociales (Economic and social sciences), all of those subjects raising broader research questions

    Examining Trust in Information Technology Artifacts : The Effects of System Quality and Culture.

    The topic of trust in information technology (IT) artifacts has piqued interest among researchers, but studies of this form of trust are not definitive regarding which factors contribute to it the most. Our study empirically tests a model of trust in IT artifacts that increases our understanding in two ways. First, it sets forth two previously unexamined system quality constructs-navigational structure and visual appeal. We found that both of these system quality constructs significantly predict the extent to which users place trust in mobile commerce technologies. Second, our study considers the effect of culture by comparing the trust of French and American potential users in m- commerce technologies. We found that not only does culture directly affect user trust in IT artifacts but it also moderates the extent to which navigational structure affects this form of trust. These findings show that system quality and culture significantly affect trust in the IT artifact and point to rich possibilities for future research in these areas.Commerce mobile; Systems use; System quality; Navigational structure; Mobile commerce; M-commerce portals;

    The Zagier polynomials. Part II: Arithmetic properties of coefficients

    The modified Bernoulli numbers \begin{equation*} B_{n}^{*} = \sum_{r=0}^{n} \binom{n+r}{2r} \frac{B_{r}}{n+r}, \quad n > 0 \end{equation*} introduced by D. Zagier in 1998 were recently extended to the polynomial case by replacing BrB_{r} by the Bernoulli polynomials Br(x)B_{r}(x). Arithmetic properties of the coefficients of these polynomials are established. In particular, the 2-adic valuation of the modified Bernoulli numbers is determined. A variety of analytic, umbral, and asymptotic methods is used to analyze these polynomials

    Zur Konstituierung moralischer Vorstellungen vor 1968. Fachliche und methodische Perspektiven transnationaler deutsch-französischer Unterrichtsrekonstruktionen

    Zu der Frage, wie Schule und Unterricht auf transnationale Ereigniszusammenhänge Bezug nehmen, arbeiten in ihrem beitrag die Autorin und der Autor am Beispiel von Analysen zu Unterrichtssituationen aus Frankreich und Deutschland, in denen \u271968\u27 im Zusammenhang des Wandels von Sexualmoral thematisiert wird. Sie befragen die beobachteten Unterrichtssequenzen auf ihre lokalen, nationalen und transnationalen Bezüge und loten Potenziale einer vergleichenden interpretativen Unterrichtsforschung für die Beschreibung des Verhältnisses von Schule und Nationalstaat aus. (DIPF/Orig.)Two exemplary classroom situations in the field of historical and political education in France and Germany focus both on the transnational event of 1968 and the sexual morals. By pursuing the research question, the constitution of the \u27object\u27 in both situations, it should be analyzed if that one follows rather local, national or transnational patterns. Concerning the methodology, it is also about to show the potentials going along with a comparative, interpretative classroom research in view of the thesis of a national reproduction of school. The results are ambiguous, and the constitution of the \u27object\u27 refers to both transnational aspects of traditional sexual morals as well as to specific local and national contexts. Patienten mit fortgeschrittenem Lungenemphysem sind trotz Ausschöpfen der konservativen Massnahmen oft anhaltend symptomatisch. Eine operative oder interventionelle bronchoskopische Behandlung können Dyspnoe, Leistungsfähigkeit, Lebensqualität sowie forcierte Erstsekundenkapazität verbessern. Analyzing the type and frequency of patient-specific mutations that give rise to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an invaluable tool for diagnostics, basic scientific research, trial planning, and improved clinical care. Locus-specific databases allow for the collection, organization, storage, and analysis of genetic variants of disease. Here, we describe the development and analysis of the TREAT-NMD DMD Global database (http://umd.be/TREAT_DMD/). We analyzed genetic data for 7,149 DMD mutations held within the database. A total of 5,682 large mutations were observed (80% of total mutations), of which 4,894 (86%) were deletions (1 exon or larger) and 784 (14%) were duplications (1 exon or larger). There were 1,445 small mutations (smaller than 1 exon, 20% of all mutations), of which 358 (25%) were small deletions and 132 (9%) small insertions and 199 (14%) affected the splice sites. Point mutations totalled 756 (52% of small mutations) with 726 (50%) nonsense mutations and 30 (2%) missense mutations. Finally, 22 (0.3%) mid-intronic mutations were observed. In addition, mutations were identified within the database that would potentially benefit from novel genetic therapies for DMD including stop codon read-through therapies (10% of total mutations) and exon skipping therapy (80% of deletions and 55% of total mutations)
