    Fibrin adhesive derived from snake venom in periodontal surgery: histologicalanalysis

    BACKGROUND: A new fibrin adhesive made of buffalo plasma-derived fibrinogen and a thrombin-like snake venom enzyme, has been successfully used to immobilize free gingival grafts. This case series histologically compared sutured grafts (control group) with others immobilized by using the fibrin adhesive (experimental group). CASE DESCRIPTION: The grafts were placed in the contralateral mandibular bicuspids of 15 patients, so that each subject received one treatment of each type. Five biopsies of each group were collected at 7, 14 and 45 days of healing, which were histologically and morphometrically analyzed as regards the relative volume density of the different connective tissue components. RESULTS: The sites in the control group presented a higher inflammatory cell density at 7 days and a tendency towards a lower collagen density. In the experimental group, the grafts had an appearance of more advanced healing. Tissue maturity characteristics progressed until 14 and 45 days, but no difference between groups could be noted at these times. Conclusions: Within the limits of the present study, it may be suggested that the alternative fibrin adhesive tested could represent an alternative to sutures in gingival grafts procedures.(FAPESP) São Paulo Research Foundatio

    Arsenite sorption and co-precipitation with calcite

    Sorption of As(III) by calcite was investigated as a function of As(III) concentration, time and pH. The sorption isotherm, i.e. the log As(III) vs. log [As(OH)3 degrees / Assat] plot is S-shaped and has been modelled on an extended version of the surface precipitation model. At low concentrations, As(OH)3 degrees is adsorbed by complexation to surface Ca surface sites, as previously described by the X-ray standing wave technique. The inflexion point of the isotherm, where As(OH)3 degrees is limited by the amount of surface sites (ST), yields 6 sites nm-2 in good agreement with crystallographic data. Beyond this value, the amount of sorbed arsenic increases linearly with solution concentration, up to the saturation of arsenic with respect to the precipitation of CaHAsO3(s). The solid solutions formed in this concentration range were examined by X-ray and neutron diffraction. The doped calcite lattice parameters increase with arsenic content while c/a ratio remains constant. Our results made on bulk calcite on the atomic displacement of As atoms along [0001] direction extend those published by Cheng et al., (1999) on calcite surface. This study provides a molecular-level explanation for why As(III) is trapped by calcite in industrial treatments.Comment: 9 page

    Homogeneous nucleation of colloidal melts under the influence of shearing fields

    We study the effect of shear flow on homogeneous crystal nucleation, using Brownian Dynamics simulations in combination with an umbrella sampling like technique. The symmetry breaking due to shear results in anisotropic radial distribution functions. The homogeneous shear rate suppresses crystal nucleation and leads to an increase of the size of the critical nucleus. These observations can be described by a simple, phenomenological extension of classical nucleation theory. In addition, we find that nuclei have a preferential orientation with respect to the direction of shear. On average the longest dimension of a nucleus is along the vorticity direction, while the shortest dimension is preferably perpendicular to that and slightly tilted with respect to the gradient direction.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to J. Multi-platform expansion is now increasingly central to the strategies of media companies and, as this chapter argues, effective use of branding in order to engage audiences effectively and to secure a prominent presence across digital platforms forms a core part of this. Drawing on original research into the experience of UK media companies, this chapter highlights some of the key economic, management and socio-cultural issues raised by the ever-increasing role of brands and branding in the strategies of international and multi-platform expansion that are increasingly common- place across media

    Structure of nanoparticles embedded in micellar polycrystals

    We investigate by scattering techniques the structure of water-based soft composite materials comprising a crystal made of Pluronic block-copolymer micelles arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice and a small amount (at most 2% by volume) of silica nanoparticles, of size comparable to that of the micelles. The copolymer is thermosensitive: it is hydrophilic and fully dissolved in water at low temperature (T ~ 0{\deg}C), and self-assembles into micelles at room temperature, where the block-copolymer is amphiphilic. We use contrast matching small-angle neuron scattering experiments to probe independently the structure of the nanoparticles and that of the polymer. We find that the nanoparticles do not perturb the crystalline order. In addition, a structure peak is measured for the silica nanoparticles dispersed in the polycrystalline samples. This implies that the samples are spatially heterogeneous and comprise, without macroscopic phase separation, silica-poor and silica-rich regions. We show that the nanoparticle concentration in the silica-rich regions is about tenfold the average concentration. These regions are grain boundaries between crystallites, where nanoparticles concentrate, as shown by static light scattering and by light microscopy imaging of the samples. We show that the temperature rate at which the sample is prepared strongly influence the segregation of the nanoparticles in the grain-boundaries.Comment: accepted for publication in Langmui

    The Mesozoic along-strike tectono-metamorphic segmentation of Longmen Shan (eastern Tibetan plateau)

    The Longmen Shan belt (eastern border of the Tibetan plateau) constitutes a tectonically active region as demonstrated by the occurrence of the unexpected 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan and 2013 Mw 6.6 Lushan earthquakes in the central and southern parts of the belt respectively. These events revealed the necessity of a better understanding of the long‐term geological evolution of the belt and its effect on the present dynamics and crustal structure. New structural and thermobarometric data offer a comprehensive dataset of the paleo‐temperatures across the belt and P‐T estimates for low‐grade metamorphic domains. In the central Longmen Shan, two metamorphic jumps of 150‐200°C, 5‐6 kbar and ~50 °C, 3‐5 kbar acquired during the Early Mesozoic are observed across the Wenchuan and Beichuan faults respectively, attesting to their thrusting movement and unrevealing a major decollement between the allochtonous Songpan‐Garze metasedimentary cover (at T > 500°C) and the autochtonous units and the basement (T < 400°C). In the southern Longmen Shan, the only greenschist‐facies metamorphism is observed both in the basement (360 ± 30°C, 6 ± 2 kbar) and in the metasedimentary cover (350 ± 30°C, 3 ± 1 kbar). Peak conditions were reached at c. 80‐60 Ma in the basement and c. 55‐33 Ma in the cover, c. 50 Ma after the greenschist‐facies metamorphic overprint observed in the central Longmen Shan (c. 150‐120 Ma). This along‐strike metamorphic segmentation coincides well with the present fault segmentation and reveals that the central and southern Longmen Shan experienced different tectono‐metamorphic histories since the Mesozoic

    The imprint of atmospheric evolution in the D/H of Hesperian clay minerals on Mars

    The deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratio in strongly bound water or hydroxyl groups in ancient martian clays retains the imprint of the water of formation of these minerals. Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) experiment measured thermally evolved water and hydrogen gas released between 550°C and 950°C from samples of Hesperian era Gale crater smectite to determine this isotope ratio. The D/H value is 3.0 (±0.2) times the ratio in Standard Mean Ocean Water (SMOW). The D/H ratio in this ~3 billion year old mudstone that is half that of the present martian atmosphere but substantially higher than that expected in very early Mars indicates an extended history of hydrogen escape and desiccation of the planet

    Strain partitioning across a subduction thrust fault near the deformation front of the Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand: A magnetic fabric study on IODP Expedition 375 Site U1518

    Understanding the distribution of strain along thrust and splay faults in active accretionary systems is crucial to understand the mechanical properties of the sediments and the strength of the fault zone and its slip behavior. This paper investigates the distribution of strain through sediment compaction and texture development across the Pāpaku fault, a major splay fault near the deformation front of the Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand using the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility technique (AMS). International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1518 penetrated hanging wall, fault zone and footwall sequences to a maximum depth of 484.9 meters below seafloor. A total of 330 discrete samples was subjected to AMS measurements and magnetic remanence data used to reconstruct the axial orientation of each sample in a geographic reference frame. The AMS display distinct fabric differences between hanging wall, through the fault zone and footwall domains, demonstrating that strain is partitioned across the fault zone. Hanging wall sequences show a strike-parallel northeasterly lineation of Kmax_{max} and weakly prolate shapes, typical for a component of northeast-southwest lateral shortening. In contrast, footwall sequences are more oblate and show a clustering of Kmax_{max} in northerly direction. This demonstrates that strain in the footwall is dominated by gravitational loading, however a component of sub-horizontal east-westerly strain, parallel to the convergence direction of the Pacific Plate exists. Strain decoupling between hanging- and footwall sequences occurs near the top of the Pāpaku fault zone. Differences in the degree of magnetic susceptibility between footwall sediments incorporated into the fault zone, and the underlying undeformed footwall sequences are indicative for the progressive dewatering of the underconsolidated footwall sequences
